I think the problem with American society is just that people have started to become too selfish. People care too much about themselves, and thinking that their own way is the only good/right way. We've lost a sense of the community, people looking out for each other, and we've also lost (or some might say, never gained) being able to respect the differences in each other's cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles.
It's got little to do with religion or sexuality, IMHO, and more to do with the fact that America is a capitalist society. When a country is run by the race for the dollar, and a race to be famous, what do you expect to happen? (shrug)
I also think that people need to lighten up a little about humor. I find it's usually pretty obvious when someone's just joking around (albeit possibly in an unintentionally less-than-tasteful manner) and when someone's actually trying to be mean.
