Yes, it's that time of year again.

Christmas? Oh! Yeah, . . . that too.

But I mean Ubisoft's annual release of an Assassin's Creed game. Today's the day. Who's looking forward to Assassin's Creed: Revelations? I'm hoping to pick it up soon, so I can start playing online. Also, the story will be played, probably multiple times by myself.

Time to kick some Templar butt. This time, it's for realz.  :P

Yet another game that gives me a painful, longer-than-4-hour-lasting nerd erection.  I guess I need to consult my physician.

It's MUCH better than the first one, definitely. But then I got Dark Souls, and I forgot all about it :) Need to go back to it at some point.

I have to wait 2 weeks for pc version. But can't wait. Hey Cez, how do you like AC2? You still got brotherhood to go...

nevermind. saw above post. glad you like it!

Fierce Deity

Yeah, Brotherhood is next, after AC2. Brotherhood is a very good game, but many considered it to be "a very big expansion", and that's exactly what it feels like. No big deal though. I expect the same for Revelations. They can only play out Ezio's originality for so long. I want a new Assassin.  >:(

On a different note, I picked up Revelations after work, and I noticed that the PS3 version comes with the full version of AC1 on it. I don't think I'll be able to muster up the enthusiasm to play that game again, but it's impressive that they were able to fit two games on one Blu-ray.

AC1 was impressive back when it came out, but it feels like a glorified tech demo compared to its sequels.  I rarely feel compelled to touch it, though my love for the series requires that I own it.  ;)

Oh, I definitely agree. The best part of AC1 was the fact that Ubisoft tricked the entire world into thinking that the game actually "took place" in the 12th century. The first time I played it and saw the beginning scene where Altair is running around and the screen gets all fuzzy, I literally thought my game was defective. The biggest spoiler of the entire franchise happening in the first five minutes of the game? I applaud Ubisoft for that feat. But like you said, the sequels trump the game in almost every aspect. Despite the fact that the game lacks a decent replay value, it in itself was still a great experience that I won't forget.

What I generally don't enjoy about the Assassins Creed franchise so far is repetition. AC1 was ok for a good 2 hours, before it was a lot of the same. AC2 is much better at keeping repetition at bay, but guess I would have preferred to have vastly different settings as opposed to it always being Italy. I get tired of hearing the same background voice overs in every city I go to for example. This is what I enjoy about games like Dark Souls, or Kingdom Hearts, or even Dragon Age, and to some extent, King's Quest, where a different setting awaits at every corner.

You're only going to get more annoyed at the background voice-overs then. They don't change them from AC2 to Revelations. I've learned to ignore them though. I would prefer a fresh new environment, but seeing as they release a new Assassin's Creed once a year now, I can only imagine they copy and paste things like NPC interactions and fighting animations. I'm playing the series for the story anyway, but I do agree that the repetition can get quite cumbersome at times.

I'm hearing rumors about the area they are going to use for AC3, and I'd be lying if I said that I don't have high hopes for it.

Even though the primary language of historical Constantinople was Greek and not Italian?  And the Ottoman Turks would have spoken Arabic.  Do they at least change accents?

Also, AC2 makes up for the odd bit of repetition with an amazing story that grabs you and doesn't let go until it's over.  Brotherhood adds even further variety, but at the expense of such a gripping story.  That's not to say that Brotherhood is BAD, just not quite as great, storywise, as AC2.  Although I suppose Desmond's story gets a lot more interesting in it.

Yeah, I should have clarified. The NPCs still speak English with an accent, as to whether it's a Greek or Arabic accent, I can't yet distinguish. They sound a lot like the accent they used for NPCs in AC1. But a lot of the phrases sound familiar from AC2. They didn't copy and paste the voice overs for Revelations from AC2/Brotherhood, but the atmosphere still seems like deja vu even though you're in a new land.

Ah, fair enough.  I figured with all their focus on "historical accuracy," they'd at least use appropriate accents.  Constantinople would have been an very multicultural city in the 1500s, so it's not surprising that you'd be hearing a little bit of everything.

AC is one of those franchises that I'm really not that fussed about 90% of the time. Every time I see a trailer for a new AC game I go "meh", then watch it and don't really care. But eventually I get the game because I know they're good games.

Then I don't do anything for a week except play because it sucks me right in. XD

The thing with AC is that there is so much *wrong* with it. The engine is a bit difficult to control: I end up flying off the wrong edge of a roof or launching myself at the wrong angle and falling to my death. While the local, historical story is often brilliantly vibrant, the macro story of sci-fi weirdness is just silly and really unnecessary. AC1 and 2's combat is a bit lacklustre; AC 3's desire to be both a game about a sneaky man doing sneaky things AND a game about a man who buys up every square inch of Rome and has his own army of assassins doesn't really make much sense.

And I don't care. That all grates on me a bit but it only shows up as an irritation because the rest of the game is so good. I wouldn't call the AC games flawless or perfect, but they are very, very good games, and they allow me to do something that no other games can: run up a wall, fling myself halfway across a city's rooftops and pounce on an unsuspecting victim, stabbing him in the throat with a beautiful fluency.

I just got to this thread now... I've been offline to play Revelations. I just beat it. I had no sleep these last few nights just playing the game, but it all payed off. That ending. Woah. Just wow. Best ending I've ever seen in a video game. EVER. I don't want to spoil anything for those that haven't yet played the game (or 2 or Brotherhood, for that matter), but it definitely sets the stage for the next AC game. I had so much fun with Revelations, but I'm quite happy that it's Ezio's final journey. I actually had the most fun playing Altair's memories and the Desmond's Journey segments just because they weren't Ezio. Also, as has been echoed by many fans and reviewers alike, Altair has found a new place in my heart. He used to be nothing special, but now he's much, much more than that. To quote Ezio, "Requiscat in Pace, Altair". I can't wait for AC3, and perhaps even some single-player DLC for Revelations. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

Wow, seems like this game really did a number on you, but in a good way. I've been busy cause of work this week, but I'm gonna play the hell out of this game this weekend, for sure.

I always liked Altair, but I didn't like how AC1 set up his character. They made his character naive and impulsive. He was tricked by his master, so he was really just a pawn. It took him around 10 assassinations before he realized that he was just somebody's plaything. As a character, I liked him, but AC1 trivialized his importance in the series. It never stated that he was going to go on to be this great assassin and the master to the Order. I like how the AC2 team brought his character back and made him out to be this legendary character.

I also like Ezio, but after three games, it's leaving a bad taste in my mouth.  :-\

I like Ezio too, but yeah, after three games it gets kind of old. I'm actually kind of hoping the next assassin is a female. I know that's something that the fans have been asking for, and it would be pretty cool to see. We can play as a female in multiplayer, so I think it'd be great to play one in single player.

What I think would be awesome is have Desmond become so adept at controlling his mind inside the animus, that he can explore more than one timeline. Kind of like what they did for Revelations, but for future titles with newer ancestors.

So instead of having a memory within a memory like with Revelations, have it so that Desmond can simultaneously experience two ancestors, or he switches between them? That would be interesting. I wonder if they can do that. I think it would actually be cool to have different ancestors in different DLC packs. In a way, it actually kind of works. They don't need to make so many sequels, but rather just come out with DLC with different ancestors. Perhaps these ancestors only have a little to teach Desmond, so it wouldn't be necessary to explore the majority of their life as we did with Ezio, but rather a tiny fraction. Whether or not they do that, I couldn't say. All I know is that I want the next Assassin's Creed game, and I want to know more about the Playstation Vita AC game (and yes, apparently they're working on one). Oh, and I saw Embers (the short film included with the Signature Edition). It's good, but only watch it after beating Revelations. It takes place afterwards, so it only makes sense to watch it in that order. After watching Embers, I'd like to play a Chinese Assassin. That's all I'm going to say.
