It's almost Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice! So what's on your wish list this season? Any good gift ideas out there? And what are your thoughts on Yankee Swaps/White Elephants/Gift Swaps? (And seriously, why is one of the names for that 'White Elephant'? I don't get it!)

Just kidding. (Though that would be fantastic.)

What I REALLY want is some free time!

White elephant swaps (no clue why they're called that) can be fun now and then - it's interesting to see what crazy things people come up with.

(Summarizing wikipedia:) White elephants were protected by law and could not be put to work in Southeast Asia, and to be given the gift of a white elephant from a monarch was a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it showed the monarch's favor, but a curse because it had to be cared for without getting any practical use from it.
So eventually the phrase turned into meaning anything without use or value, and in the White Elephant version of the game the gifts are usually something not very useful or desirable.

The extended family on my mother's side gets together every year to play Yankee Trader, usually have 30-40 people playing. We play with real (non-joke) gifts with a ~$20 limit. From what I understand it started before I was born because there's so many cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. that they started playing it so that everyone only had to buy one gift for the game rather than buying gifts for everyone.

Tess--thank you! That finally makes that phrase make sense! I suppose I should've wiki'd it myself, but, eh, this was more fun :)

My family on my mom's side does one on Christmas, there are about, hm...15 of us, at most? It's a fun time, and we started doing it for similar reasons. My mom has a Christmas party with her friends every year where they do one, too, which is usually pretty fun to watch :)

My wife's family does that, too. There are seven siblings, most with kids of their own, so getting gifts for everyone would be really expensive. They also have Christmas in January so the spouses'/significant others' families can have Christmas Day.

I hope you get chosen for the Wishlist Giveaway. You look like you could use it.  :P

Aside from the games that I picked on my Steam Wishlist, I was looking forward to getting a fretless bass guitar. I also wanted Skyward Sword and Rocksmith. Other than that, there's not much else. I actually feel like this Christmas will bear some surprises, because I'm not really expecting anything.

So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!
