Hey everyone! I've actually not played many adventure games and (gasp) hadn't heard of Gabriel Knight until recently. I grew up with King's Quest but have just gotten interested in finding out about Gabriel Knight and so I will be doing a LP of it. Apparently it's Jane Jensen's best work so it'll be nice to play it before getting involved in Cognition when that comes out  ;)

It'll be a blind LP which means that if there are opportunities to "miss" something and be stuck forever in the game, I'm likely to run into it! So if you plan to join in and have finished the game before please let me know if I do something that will keep me from finishing the game!

I've set up everything for recording and everything seems to be working so I'll be trying to put out my first video tomorrow. I'm looking forward to playing with you!  :D

EDIT- Also playing The Secret of Monkey Island! It looks so fun!

Ooh, fantastic. I haven't really gotten into the GK series before either, so I'll be watching. :D

It's funny how you find you enjoy your life when you're happy to be alive.

It's a fantastic series :) Count me in for watching the LP ^^

I wish you well, Dru. I've tried watching LPs of GK, but that drunken Madame, or whatever she is, just drives me insane with her narration. It's not like I expect that awesome Bastion narrator, but I'd much prefer one who can speak coherently. :P

KatieHal

Yeah...as cool as her drawl and N'awlins accent is, and I can appreciate the appropriateness of that to the game itself, she talks waaaaayyy toooooo slooooowww for my tastes. I turn off the narrator voice on that game any time I play it.

Noted. I had mentioned so in the episode and whether or not people would want me to play it with or without narration (because it is painfully slow), and it looks like I have an answer! I think it's a fun voice, but would be insufferable for a viewer. I'll keep it off and narrate myself.

Perfect. Thanks, Dru! I, personally, don't really care to explore the series, but I like knowing that I can watch someone else playing it. I feel the same way about the new Final Fantasy games.

Does the game become more "adventurey" and less talky-talky? I'm starting to want to close the project since it's less "adventuring" and more "talky-talky with NPCs" which is leaving me no room for commentary. I lost my part 3 recording but it was just talking with 3 more NPCs  :dead: I like the game but it's not easy to commentate for. It's a reason I would never do Laura Bow games.

Thought about LPing the new SQ2 remake but I can't find a way to get it to allow for screen capture.

Probably going to scrap the project and do a new adventure game but don't know if there's any new ones out. The list of 2012 PC adventure games Katie linked on the New Year is intriguing though :)

There is a lot getting clues via conversation in Gabriel Knight. The guy's basically a PI, so, it makes sense. There is action and finding clues and more DOING things as you get further into the game.

Even if you scrap the LP, I do encourage you to keep playing the game itself on your own time.

Please don't stop. There's a lot of dialogue in the beginning but there's more puzzle solving later on. Also, if you click on the grey squares on the sides of the map, you'll find there are more places to go to. There's an actual puzzle in Grandma's house when you go into the attic.

I took a short look at the Secret of Monkey Island and wowow it looks like so much fun! I just posted my first video (same post with my Gabriel Knight video list) and geez how could I have never played my dream life as a pirate? So I'll be doing that.

I don't know if I'll stop recording Gabriel Knight but Monkey Island certainly has my interest for the moment  ;D

Yay!
Monkey Island is so much fun.... to watch. LOL. I really suck at adventure games, but I've watched Longplays of every Monkey Island game. I can't believe you're just getting into the series, but I'm glad for you.

Interesting voice facts:
Alan Young - "Scrooge McDuck" from DuckTales; "Wilbur Post" from Mr. Ed; Irishman from Monkey Island series (Sorry, I forget the name.).

Jim Cummings - "Winnie the Pooh"/"Tigger"; "Monterey Jack"/"Fat Cat" from Chip'n'Dale Rescue Rangers; Several characters, including police officer who gave you the package, from Gabriel Knight.

It sounds like Rob Paulsen ("Yakko"/"Dr. ScratchinSniff"/"Pinky" from Animaniacs, "Raphael" from the GOOD Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon (1980s)) is the voice of the ghost pirate who spoke with LeChuck in the cut scene.

drusain

Well Monkey Island was fun! Thanks to you all who played with me :) Time to get back to Gabriel Knight.

I just get scared about the whole "game screws you over" thing while I'm doing the LP and I don't really know to what degree I should expect this from Gabriel Knight. Is it like Monkey Island where I can't lose no matter what I do? Or more like KQ5 where they punish you at every screen for daring not to buy the hint guide? Somewhere in between?  ;D

Hey Dru, I'll let you know if I notice something you may not have noticed as you play, so as to be supportive.  I want you to keep up your LPs. :) But, honestly, I don't like the darker adventure games.  However, due to the player and to the voice cast (JIM CUMMINGS, yeah!!!!), I'll keep an eye on your releases.  By the way, congrats on the success of Monkey Island. :)

drusain

Yeah there's some neat voice acting in this of the games I've been playing, eh? Monkey Island had some great ones too :D Man, Monkey Island was loads of fun; much more than I was hoping for. I hope to keep it fun for you! I'm planning to get the 3rd part up tomorrow and get back into the game.

I just died in a Sierra game for the first time in about 15 years, which feels weird.

You all weren't kidding about Gabriel Knight being good for the story. I've just finished the game and there are just so many story elements that were put into the game that I could definitely tell was written by someone who was passionate about how to weave a cohesive and strong narrative together. It's unfortunate that brilliant writing like what this game had has dissolved into the stories we see in most games now. Having played Gabriel Knight, I'm even more excited to see how Jane Jensen's hand has influenced the narrative of Cognition. Really looking forward to that :)

In one of my master's courses we're discussing whether or not video games can be used as devices for students to develop literacy and my colleagues mostly don't agree but I'm trying to push Gabriel Knight as an example where I can take the first scene of Gabriel Knight (where we see him and Grace for the first time) and that scene alone tells me so much information about setting and character than I see in most books I see nowadays.

I'm starting Monkey Island 2 now so I'll put that game playlist on the post where I have all the other links for those interested in it. :pumpkin:

You know, there are different ways of improving one's vocabulary/grammar/spelling through games. I, for one, enjoy playing games in other languages. In fact, with the European version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you can change the language easily. Sometimes I play it in Spanish (which I understand best of the options); other times, like today, I play it in French with a dictionary next to me. Also, there are Word Search games in different languages, which, essentially, force you to learn the proper spelling of a word. For that matter, Crossword Puzzles force you to spell correctly in order for the puzzle to work. And, of course, Scrabble (with a dictionary and a conjugation reference). Many word games are available in video game form.
