I REALLY REALLY do not picture Graham as buff... I am even including the first game where Graham was actually kinda awsome.

But it is sort of where my and Roberta's oppinions kinda clash.

It's sort of the old fashioned "hero with a stiff upper lip" trope...Which fits into the fairy tale nature of it.

Besides with all the crazyness that is in Kings Quest... having a lot of reactions would quickly devolve in "Whats that? What the heck? WHATS GOING ON!"

I never pictured Graham as buff either, particularly cause nearly every single enemy is stronger than him, including humans. It is like click Ogre, you die, click thief, you die, click spider, you die

"Never tired, never frightened, never deafeated. He's supposed to be BUFF!"

...And if he doesn't feel like that at times, then he's a flat character. Believable characters DO need to rest and take a breather, they react to something frightening like how they should (depending on their personality they run away, they grab their gear and fight back, or they try to outwit the creature), and while they are supposed to be strong... one man can only take so much before he snaps and breaks from pressure and stress.

Even Lork!Cedric has more believability than the original!Graham if THAT is Roberta's stance on him. At least Lork!Cedric I'm TRYING to give a little character development to him, and trying to make him a better character.

Yeah, the thing about King's Quest, is that its more of the fairy tales and the fantasy awesomeness than character development. I feel the characters stay the same throughout the entire game and even the series. I don't think any of the characters changed at all, by that I mean they would make the same decisions at the start of the game and the end of the game.

Which isn't a bad thing. Sometimes the thing that makes a story are characters who sort of pass the test of time where their virtues and strength of character solve their problems and they don't need to change for good or ill. If they are stronger it is only in willpower or in their inner strength being pushed to the forefront.

People often put too much value on dynamic characters and forget that many of the greatest characters of all fiction have been static.

Graham is a rock but he isn't "buff".

I think in general video games have come a long way since then too. There wasn't much in the way of character development in the majority of games, that's something that has come to be more and more important in gaming as time has gone on.

I am not beating you down GrahamRocks I actually agree with you somewhat too.

It is all up to interpetation on what is needed at the moment.

Is this a game about a character through the strength and virtue he or she already possesses struggles through and comes out on top? A rock against a torrent of trouble.

Or is this about a character who is but a leaf in the current changed for better or ill from the tides of troubles? Either needing to remember their inner self, becoming greater then they ever were before, or sacrificing their morals for the greater good. Is it a struggle to remain the same or is this a journey of transformation?

True character development has always been something tricky in videogames and just fiction in general. In fact you could even see the Monkey Island Trilogy (I am ignoring the 4th) as a sort of progression of Guybrush turning into a true hero rather then the fake hero he always been.

but you are right they have gone a very long way. Point and Click adventures have ALWAYS have a very rocky history with not knowing whether they are games that are trying to tell a story or a game that is trying to present a series of challenges without ever really comming up with a balance.

It was when you said "Okay okay" which I interpreted as "Okay sheesh I get it, blah blah blah blah blah you jerk!"
