Derek Karlavaegen summons up the courage and passes through the magical doorway he found within Mordack's island labyrinth, only to stumble across further monumental discoveries. Come read how his tale grows ever more mysterious in this latest installment from our intrepid contributor!

Very cool 3 part story arc.  The build was definitely worth it.  I like how you built up the interest by throwing out a few hints of who Al was talking to before the big reveal.

I also like the little shout out to Raseir and QFG2.  Very cool.

You guys are taking this in your own direction, I'm really curious to see where it goes next.

Keep it up Four Winds team  :D

Lucreto...

you're really diggin' in deep, fellas. I hope you know what you're doing by referencing MoE like this...

Thanks Rick! ;) It's a challenge to build these reveals one after the other but I think it's working well so far.

As for Raseir... yes, I realised I wanted the name of a mysterious city that Alhazred would know of, so... ;D

GrahamRocks: you mean that, by bringing Lucreto in, we're accepting MoE as canon?

We already had. Despite what anyone may think of the game, MoE *is* canon, and already acknowledged as such in TSL (we had an article in volume 1 of FW about Conor being knighted, he's mentioned in the game, and a replica of the Mask shows up in the pawnshop as well).

Well, that's what I thought, which is why it seems fine to me to bring Lucreto into it. He's a KQ villain like any other; yes, an unusually powerful one who appeared to be banished to another dimension, but his power was tied partly to the Mask (and is now considerably lessened), and this article goes some way to explaining how he got out of limbo.

But GrahamRocks might have meant something else.

Canon it may be, but not many people are going to like it.

While you may speak the truth, GrahamRocks, this forum has beaten this particular point to death: the conclusion is that TSL has considered MoE canon... those of us who don't like it will just have to live with it. *shrugs* In any case, Derek's adventures are set in the TSL version of events, ergo darthkiwi likewise has to accept that MoE is canon.

And in any case, the fact that Lucreto is in the Derek stories doesn't mean you have to play MoE or anything. If you disliked the experience of playing MoE then that isn't really affected by Lucreto's existence. From the point of view of the Derek articles, Lucreto, like Alhazred and like the KQ5 witch, is another villain, being taken out of the context of his particular game and re-inserted into the KQ universe somewhere else for storytelling purposes. Even if you hated the gameplay, style or writing of MoE, that really has nothing to do with Lucreto as a character as viewed by Derek. ;)

Besides, I have some cool ideas about him which I will hopefully be able to develop at some point and which I couldn't really do with any other character. :D

*smirks*  ;)

Let me guess... you're doing the same thing I'm doing with Cedric? Making him a better character and fleshing him out more?

Following up on what Katie mentioned, the very first issue of the Four Winds back in 2002, when the project was still called KQIX : Every Cloak has a Silver Lining, contained an interview with Connor Maclyrr who had just recently saved the kingdom of Daventry from the cataclysmic destruction of the Mask of Eternity.

So yes MoE has always played a role, I'll be it a minor one, in the events of the Silver Lining.  Personally I see this as an opportunity to delve more into its back story and maybe find a new appreciation for the black sheep of the series.

Also for those of you interested, the articles from the long lost Four Winds issues of the early 2000s can still be found here at the King's Quest omnipedia.

Some of these articles have resurfaced when the Four Winds was rebooted in the lead up to the release of Episode 1 but there are also some lost gems that can only be found there.

Yes, the idea is to flesh him out. After all, in MoE his personality was basically just "bad man in temple with nasty guards". But there's more that can be done with him ;)

Nice find with those FW articles Rick!

It's been a busy week for Derek what with the two articles and the (very awesome) recap video. Well done :)

I haven't played MoE but I can definitely tell from the narrative what sort of character Lucreto is.
