Damar

I don't have too much of a problem with Shamir not being able to do much.  Initially I thought it would be interesting if Shamir was basically useless because genies take on attributes of their masters, and Shamir's master is currently in a coma, so it would be like he had received a lobotomy.  But obviously, that's not the  way they wrote it.

But, honestly, I think you could argue that Shamir is only powerful where reality is concerned.  He can change appearance and rain dazzle balls of fury down on you, but that doesn't mean that he can alter the fabric of reality.  He can't necessarily change time or undo existence or transport you to another plane of existence.  That's beyond his power because he deals in reality, not magic.  He's a powerful being, but still lives in the same world everyone else does.  The Black Cloaks are something altogether different and their powers are more arcane and unnatural.  Still, it would be nice to have Shamir say something like that, because right now it does seem like he could be better utilized outside of a library.  Like as a bodyguard or a gofer or something.

Now that would have been fascinating. Shouldn't someone be making sure no one steals the bottle, for that matter? It must be unprotected right now.

Maybe it's locked in a vault.

I strongly believe that Shamir and what he does is magic.

It is just that magic isn't a solution to everything in Kings Quest.

Shamir is a pacifist who absolutely detests violence to the point where he tried to do everything he could not to be the dirrect hand of death in KQ6 knowing full well that he had no choice (I like to imagine he got drunk off of mint to blunt the sting of the guilt he felt under his new master). As well he is clearly not a fighter and is rather clumsy and slow with his own magic when it comes to using it for offense (mostly because, he doesn't want to). He would be a very terrible choice to combat other mages.

Edgar however is closer to a trained battle mage having more of the reflexes and mindset to use his magic against attacking mages. Even so far as defeating his more powerful Aunt with raw skill only losing because he she betrayed him. Not to mention Edgar has proven he is no slouch in raw combat being able to fight off the Troll King to a standstill in his own body. If he wasn't taken by surprise at the wedding it was more then possible he could have actually saved Rosella.

As for him being a "Goffer" that is not a bad choice except that Shamir has a rather sizable weakness in that he cannot disguise his eyes in whatever form he takes. Something the villain, who has proven to have intimate knowledge of the royal family, would very quickly catch.

Research is something that is desperately needed. A clue or a hint as to where the black cloaks are, how to fight them, or how to ward off their magic would have been invaluable.
