I have "Windows 7 64 bit" and a "nVidia GTX 480".
Bought it through Rain.
Ran CognitionEpisode1Setup.exe and installed into "C:\games\Cognition - Episode 1".
Started it and it wanted to "phone home". I "allowed" this on my personal firewall (Comodo).  I entered the "Unlock Code". It did not work. Again. Again. I re-started it, this time with deactivated firewall. This time it worked and I put back my firewall.
Then, after selecting my screen resolution and clicking "Play", it wanted to "phone home" AGAIN (there is no option to NOT check for an update). On the screen there was something about "Current version number: 2", "Online version number: -1". I opened my firewall again, then it said "up to date" and crashed with a nice Windows error sound showing this.

I was really looking forward to this after first seeing it on Kickstarter.
Why do always have the paying customers get f***** by DRM?
I do not understand.

Next time, clearly write "REQUIRES  INTERNET CONNECTION ON EVERY LAUNCH. USES ONLINE ACTIVATION VIA SERIAL." below the product. So I can avoid these kind of products.

I want my money back. My order number on Rain was 11198036700.

The screen you're at is just checking to see if there are any patches for the game, it doesn't have anything to do with DRM or game protection. One of the testers ran into this issue and found that he could just press Esc or click the X to close the error and the game would run just fine for him. Let me know if that works for you.

I tried running the game with the network adapter disabled, and it's just hanging at the update screen - even after i re-enabled the adapter. Isn't there a time-out after which it will just go ahead and launch the game? That's what I would expect.

That is a bit odd because for me it would always give up after like 30 seconds and move on.

If you do want a refund, you're welcome to bring that up with the site you actually purchased the game from. I am in the process of finishing an updated version of the episode that doesn't try to check for updates automatically each time you run it.

Yeah, "go to the site you purchased it".
You know what? I purchased it from YOU, whatever the middleman is.
YOU (as a company) got my money.
YOU have to give it back to me.

I've provided the name and the order number of your middleman above, so you can return the transaction. You could contact me anytime using the mail address in my profile site of this forum if you want to give me another way to get my money back. You decide not to.

I've decided that it's not worth the trouble arguing with your middleman if you don't give a s***.
Have a good one with my $9.99

This surely is the last time you heard from me.

We can forward your information to the store, and I'll do so, but we ourselves don't have the ability to refund your order directly without sending that info to them. It will be a slower process coming from us than from you, the user. I imagine they'll need to contact you to confirm regardless.

In any case, I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed with your purchase. We understand DRM can be a polarizing issue and tried to make it as light as possible on the game (as well as asking for feedback on that aspect here in our forums).
