Ok as you can probably tell my friend and i are in a debate right now about if games should all become online or not :-\

And im trying to explain to him that if all games became online then games would be more killing (Action Genre) rather than having a storyline :-\, games would be pointless :(

IMHO i just think that if all games became online there would be no point in having games anymore :(

If all games were online it would get rid of alot of games with great story lines and people would just be more concerened with leveling up and pvping that actually advancing through the game, online games are great though play with friends and meet new people but, sometimes i dont want to be bothered and want to play offline games alone, so all games being online would be a really bad idea.
Now everything is clear
I erase the fear
I can disappear
(please) I don't ever want to make it stop

Yeah thats exactly how i feel about it but my friend just said "online is the only way" :-\, im going to call him an idiot now XB

Jason what a great topic for offtopic <3

Anyhow, its a odd because right now Im more into online games rather than normal games, for example I met John like a year ago in a online game the first time I ever ever cared for an online game at all, being done like 2 websites for online games I was like, ok, I just must try one, and so I did.

It is hard to not be biased about it, I think I will always prefer offline games, because they (IMHO) give out so much more out of a game than an online one (usually) and I prefer online games because you do get to interact with real people but then again, if the game sucks or lacks of update all you can lean onto is the community so that's a much more risky thing to bet your sucess into.

So, I think its a matter of taste, it is not to say whats best between black and white is wheter you would choose black and white, obviously offline games are somehow more known because not everyone has the internet conection to commit to spend time/money into an online game, then again, I believe offline>online but probably that's just for now, maybe someday online games will rule over the offline ones.

All online definately. Thats the only way games are going to start getting better. Its not like you'd have to interact with anyone in every game but I think every game should have some kind of online aspect wether its a communicating type thing or a co-op type thing for games which need a plot.

I don't have a problem with more or all games have a multiplayer *option*, if it makes sense to have one in the game. I'd just rather not that all games move towards the growing trend of shafting the single-player experience in favor of the multiplayer. (I'm starting to lose count of the number of reviews I read where the author says the equivalent of "The single-player part blows chunks, but the multiplayer is awesome!")

I personally have a lack of interest in playing online games, or, at least, playing online games outside of maybe a small group of people who I can trust to play fairly and who would be around my level enough to keep it from being frustrating. :P (Which, considering I suck at gaming in general, would be almost no games.)

I think some should be online, and some should be offline. I haven't played games much for a month or so, but I play both.

Not all multiplayer games cost a monthly fee, so I'll assume you mean any multiplayer game. Some multiplayer games have a good story(System Shock2), and some don't(quake3). Personally, I prefer co-op games, humans against AI. They don't make many  of those anymore, but that's my favorite online mode.

P.S. Savage is updated regularly(so far anyways), is multiplayer, and doesn't cost a monthly fee. It also doesn't have much of a story(at least they tried), many are BELOW Jeysie's level(that was an attempt to get Jeysie to look at the game), and has few people playing(I don't know why).

Jeysie

Hmm. By level, I meant in terms of skill... as in, I don't have any when it comes to action games. :P So I generally spend most action games being a ten-second target, which isn't much fun. But if Savage is different, I might give it a look-see at some point. ;)

It's an RTSS(real time strategy shooter). So you might enjoy the RTS(real time strategy) mode. If you don't like the RTS mode, you could be a healer. You could also just stay at the base, build, mine, etc. You might not like it(because even the RTS mode requires speed), but I hope you will. It also runs great on a 56k.

I've spent quite a few games, explaining things to "newbies". There are many new players, because of the demo. I own the game, but the game and demo work together.

The only problem you might have, is with the requirements. If you stay in RTS mode, it will probably run fine(then again, I don't know your system specs).

P.S. People can only level up between rounds, if thats what you were talking about.

Nah, I meant more like... playing with people on the same skill level as me in terms of playing ability. Playing with people who are really good at action games is no fun because I constantly get my butt completely kicked.

My opinon:

So you are willing to pay a monthly fee for these on-line games?  My budget works out better if I just have a one time fee and that is why I stay clear of on-line games and I do not have the time for an on-line game like Everquest.

I must admit that i enjoy playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein online but if it was just online with no offline option then i wouldnt have bought it :-\

The way i see it is that there should be an option between online or offline ;D, unfortunately my friend can only see one side of the story :-\

BTW he also had a fight with me an hour later about me playing DOS games :-\, he reckons i should get with the times and drop the DOS games >:(

He pisses me off >:(

I got the feeling from Jason's wording that his *friend* was the one who brought up the whole matter of whether or not Jason should play DOS games, but I could be wrong.

Hehe WELL I've got a view of the future where all games will be subscription. Now I know this sounds like a crap and not to mention expensive idea but think about it. If you didn't have to buy a game at all and you just had say a £1 or £2 per month subscription not only would it work out cheaper but it would force developers to come out with decent games rather than the pile of crap that a large percentage of games are today. SO yes I would be willing to pay the subscriptions but not by todays standards.

Do programmers make poor games nowadays because they have special effects and feel that story no longer matters because of the special effects?

Partly. I think the PS2 generation of "OMG LOOK AT TEH GRAPHICS!!1!1! THATS TEH ROXXORS11!!1!!11!" has made developers concentrate too much on that aspect of games. Story in console games isn't a very big thing any more apart from the survival horror or adventure (not PC adventure type game lol) genre. Still things ahve improved in the last few years with awesome games like Viewtiful Joe, PN03, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Disgea etc which are concentratiing more on fun and in some cases even story which is great.

Well Thank goodness for that -- I would choose story and fun everytime -- still remember when I played Wishbringer which is a text-based game by Infogames and I loved it because it was so well written that I pictured myself being there --- solved the game with my dad --- tried playing it again a few years ago and realized I did not have the patience anymore to try and solve the game -- Oh Well!  I guess I have been spoiled by graphics and sound too much!  :<
Also, have played Zork I which is one of the best text based adventure games in my opinion -- these were even considered old when my dad bought them for me on sale
