See, i like a game to have really good graphics and a good story i mean i dont see why they have to do one or the other it really annoys me that most games are like that now you never get a whole package, A new game coming out for x-box called fable looks to be promising the graphics are really good and you pretty much make up the story yourself since your basically living a life and you make all the choices so hopefully that will set a new  standard.
Now everything is clear

(please) I don't ever want to make it stop

I'll just wait for the Xbox emulator to be finished(or, at least, plays games smoothly).

So will Fable be like a glorified Sims?

Drunken Chinchilla

No I wouldn't say that. It's based around the fact that you are a wannabe hero. You can take missions and quests that people give you but there are other wannabe hero's as well and if you don't do your quests quick enough the other hero's may beat you to them. Its by the same people that made Black and White so expect great things :)

I look forward to hearing how people like Fable.  BTW, was Black and White any good?  I read about it but never tried it.

I don't like it. The people that do like it, tend to get tired of it fast(repetitive?).

Drunken Chinchilla

Awwww I loved B&W! It was more for the quirky little things like the man you could pick up and throw round but would never and I mean NEVER die! So annoying! PLus you could have an evil cow! What more could you want?

Quote from: Drunken Chinchilla on June 14, 2004, 09:51:08 AMHehe WELL I've got a view of the future where all games will be subscription. Now I know this sounds like a crap and not to mention expensive idea but think about it. If you didn't have to buy a game at all and you just had say a £1 or £2 per month subscription not only would it work out cheaper but it would force developers to come out with decent games rather than the pile of crap that a large percentage of games are today. SO yes I would be willing to pay the subscriptions but not by todays standards.
M$ is already planning to release a future version of their Office-suite via this kind of subscription. Although I've got cable connection I don't like it one bit (which is why I'm 'reviving' this thread).
First of all, bandwith is not free, ther's a limit to the data I can download. Because that's what happens when you do something online, you download data (and upload too, probably, but not as much (hopefully, because my limit to that is even smaller)). When I can use a program offline, my downloaded data stays the same and still as far away from my limit than before.
When I have to pay a fee to a company to play their game, only available online, they will also know who I am. I value my privacy. Now, I just buy it in a store, but that information does not pass on to the publisher. And besides, what happens if there's a problem with their server(s) just at a time when you're playing or want to play? I don't think they'll be giving back part of your subscription fee.
More securiity reasons for not wanting online-only games: manner of payment. I'm guessing it'll be VISA-only, and I don't have VISA, and even if I had, I do not like to use it over the internet too much. A mailing list I'm subscribed too has already been hacked and although those sorts of databases are (hopefully) more protected I'd rather just have to pay it once and then be over with it.
Also, what will happen to out-dated games (at least when the companie decide it's out-of-date)? At some time or another, I might still want to play that out-of-date game one more time, but I can't, because it was only available online and it's been removed. I hope your view of the future will not come to life. Let me have the choice whether or not I want to play a game offline or online. Thank you.

But you're just concentrating on the negative aspects! Within the coming years bandwidth is going to become dirt cheap. Look at Japan, they've had insanely fast and (most importantly) cheap connections for ages and 1Mbit lines are considered the slowest of slow. Once that begins to finally spread around the world I think we'll start to see some VERY unique and innovative products being released whether its for entertainment or work.

Costs will always be falling so thats really not a problem once it gets to a certain point and UNTIL then I dont reckon any company would be stupid enough to switch to a completely subscription based system.

However, I think Copycat has some good points.  It is one thing to go into a store and buy some software but quite another to be hooked into paying fees for the software for years.  (Btw, a great way for a company to increase their revenues and possibly hurt the consumer by later raising fees or changing the terms of the contract)  Identity theft is the number one crime and it is growing by leaps and bounds and this may make it even worse.  I already have to pay utilities and rent monthly and do not have much desire to be locked into more monthly fees, no matter how small.  I guess time will tell if this becomes a viable future business model.  (it seems to have already had success with games  :P )

CC, I get free-bandwidth if I download, or play on my ISP's server  :P. I agree, I would never keep paying for a game like that  ;). But then this also could curve game piracy if people had to pay to play online  :o.

Edit: Did i mention i get free uploads too?
:P

Drunken Chinchilla

Well I get what you're saying about not wanting to be locked into a yearly game contract but surely thats the case with everyone so I doubt if this type of scheme did come into play it would be as extreme as the usual annual contract. One thing which I've seen around already is where the publishers/developers have a gamecard that you can purchase in shops which gives you a few months of subscription so this could be a viable option for people who didn't want to use Credit Cards, although tbh i dont really see the problem with them. I've been shopping online for a good 3 years now and never once have I had any problems AND if you dont have a visa card just use paypal, it accepts near every card under the sun!

People with lag just don't know how to setup a firewall properly  ;)

Oldbushie

But I don't use a firewall... and it has always been the server being slow cuz everyone was complaining about lag... ;P

Online is good because you get to play against others that are usually intelligent :P

But Offline is also great because you get a storyline with loveable characters :D

Both are great and hopefully they continue to produce games in both of these categories ;D
