Stuck in the near end of episode 2

I'm stuck in episode 2 because I need to record Kelsey's voice (or at least I thought I had to) but the recorder and the  blank tape are not combinable items. Anyone know a solution to this?

That's odd, becuase they are combinable. What message are you getting when you try to combine them? There should be the sound of a tape going into a player, and the LOOK message for the recorder should have changed to say there's a blank tape in there.

If I select to combine the blank tape with something, the recorder is greyed out. Vice versa if i select to combine the recorder with something,the blank tape is excluded as a combination possibility! I acquired the tape and the demo cd BEFORE having reached the lair.
