Is Quest for Glory 5 worth playing?

I made a weak attempt playing it awhile ago and it didn't really hook me, just wondering if I am missing out on anything.

If it is worth a play, any general tips I should know going into it?

Yes, it definitely is.  It's really an underrated game.  It doesn't quite capture the magic of the earlier games, but that's mainly because it's just a little bit more action oriented.  I think the art style is actually quite nice, all things considered.  I think my only beef is the rather contrived way that SO MANY characters from throughout the entire series end up in the same land.  I really liked QFG5, honestly.  It does feel more RPGish than the others, though, definitely.  There are some great character moments in it though that are quite important to series lore, if you're into that sort of thing.  Of particular note is one sequence where you can
resurrect one of two important dead characters from earlier in the series.
In my opinion, it was the best series-ender that Sierra ever did, next to Larry 7 (though that didn't really bring Larry to an END, per se.)

Yeah the surplus of old characters annoyed me. Mostly the game just felt slow and I didn't want to waste my time if it didn't pan out.  I enjoyed the Greek theme.

I also found the music rather addictive, especially the theme that played when you were walking around the city in Silmaria.  I can hear it in my head right now.

Oddly, I was most disappointed by two characters that didn't re-appear in QFG5. I was expecting to see the Gnome from QFG4 as well as Dr. Cranium.

I found the story for QFG5 to be entertaining. I wasn't enamored with the 3D graphics. Frankly, I think QFG4 was more visually appealing. As for gameplay, I thought it was the weakest of the series. Combat was not very challenging. Although, perhaps that makes sense. At this point in the series, you ARE a Hero, and should be able to handle just about any kind of attack that comes your way. It was fun, and once I get my Paladin through QFG4, I'll replay it, but I don't know how many times I will do so. Probably not very many.

I also ran into a buglet that made it impossible for my Wizard to complete a couple of the quests. Didn't keep me from finishing the game, but it was frustrating.

FYI, there's a fan-based revival in the works, that's updating a lot of the graphics. Read about it here:

...I can't believe it! Lamb and I actually agree on something?! Amazing!

I'd also say it's definitely worth playing, but didn't grip me as much as QFG1, 2 and 4 did. (Never got very far with 3.) It's still head-and-shoulders above a morass of sub-par RPGs, though.

I really liked the art style - the Graeco-Roman thing - but didn't like the art medium so much. By which I mean, early '90s pixel art would have been just dandy.

But it's still a nice end to the series, and I had a blast playing as a Thief even if there was more combat than I expected.

I'm still disappointed I never finished QfG4--it was my first QfG and I LOVED it. Just got to a point where I wasn't sure what to do (pre-Internet days, here), and drifted away from it. I've seen the rest on an LP but I would like to play it myself again someday. Hell, I even OWN the series from GOG--argh, when will I stop being too busy making games to play games?! #firstworldproblems

Well, that's it. I've lost all respect for you now.

The gnome from QFG4 is definitely in QFG5.  You must have missed him.  He appears at the inn at least once and does a big performance.  It's a bit more of a cameo than some of the other characters though.

Well this is all encouraging, maybe I'll pick up with the thief again, though I have a Paladin still twiddling his thumbs in QFG1.  :-\

I guess part of it was that I knew QFG4 was the magnum opus of the series, and Dragon Fire wasn't likely to compare, but it sounds like a rewarding experience nonetheless.

And yes that is a passive-aggresive push to make Katie finish QFG4.

My issue with QFG5 was that the premise itself didn't appeal to me. Why would you want to become a ruler? The Hero has a way more interesting life without that. Other than that, it was a good game (though nowhere near QFG4).

Chances are, if you like QfG4 as much as most people did, you might feel a little let down by the 5th game, but it's still worth playing.

For instance, I was disappointed in SQ6, not because it's a bad game, but because the series was on a roll with 3, 4 and 5, and it's sort of hard not to be disappointed by the 6th game, which just kind of putters along.

QfG5 is a better series finale than most of Sierra's works; LSL really went down the crapper after Love for Sail, discussions about King's Quests' post-KQ6 years have been done to death, Gabriel Knight 3 just wasn't as good as the first two, and Phantasmagoria 2...well, I'm not even going to go there.

In short, play QfG5. It's fun.

Well, you can always
opt out at the end!  ;)  That is one of the choices.
Ah - I forgot about that. It has been a long time. Also, I did like having the opportunity to bring back Katrina or Erana, though I really wanted to bring both of them back. Really, I wanted to bring Katrina, but then I felt guilty about leaving Erana. :P

It's definitely more worth playing than say.... King's Quest VII!!!!!

Ah, I'm so glad that my QFG fanfic everts that! :)

See, I have three Heroes (Rico, Marcus, Finn), all of them in love with three different girls (Elsa, Erana, Katrina). Two of them (Marcus and Finn) are taking the Rites of Rulership, while Rico does the Chief Thief contest. Since both Marcus and Finn love completely different people, they both volunteer to sacrifice themselves for their respective loves, and of course, they get them both back with their hides intact as well.

Well sheesh, SPOILERS.

All I know is if I write a King's Quest fanfiction, I won't tell anybody where I'm going with it. You'll never see the plot twists and turns coming! Also, there will be lots of profanity, graphic gore, racist slurs, religious blasphemy and sex.
