Hello, I am getting ready to buy the Kings Quest Collection, having only beaten the 6th game and playing around with others when I was young. I was also thinking about getting the Kings Quest Companion book to play it in a old school style, and I was wondering if that's a good book to get for a guide?

I plan on playing The Silving Lining once I have completed the games 1-7. I hear it takes place in the Green Isles so I am pretty psyched to return there :D

First off, welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy The Silver Lining when you get to it :)

I only ever read the guide a little, but I know many people have enjoyed it. Regardless, the way they approached how it was written and Peter Spear creating the Derek character for it is all pretty cool. :)

I'm not sure how easy it is to get a copy now, though, at least at a good price. But good luck!

Just a warning to you when you get to The Silver Lining: If you read the Companion first, you might be annoyed, as TSL tends to be different in terms of lore.

I went ahead and ordered the collection and companion third edition. The forth edition was a little more money. I was really pumped to hear TSL takes place in the Green Isles. I grew up in the green isles. I played all the Kings quests games but 7 and 8, not gonna bother with 8. Never fully beat any of them  except 6 though. I can't wait for this stuff to get here!

EDIT: It was 16 bucks too total with free shipping on both too. Also the collection is brand new

Heh, yeah, GrahamRocks is correct--we didn't consider the KQC as "canon" for our game, so there is some conflict on some plot points. we only considered the original games to be canon.

Nice! That's a good deal. :)

Yeah I read there's conflict between the companion book and the old games too though

EDIT: Dang, I just read that the KQ 6 on the collection isn't the CD version with audio, and what's it mean that the first kings quest isnt the AGI version? Also will I be able to play KQ 7 on 64 bit windows 8?

You might want to try GoodOldGames; they have the entire KQ collection optimized for current-day computers.

Yeah  I think I am going to get those versions.. Kinda sucks now that I bought the XP collection but, I guess I'll leave the XP collection new and sealed and keep it. I need the CD version of 6 though or it won't be the same.

honestly, GOG is a god send for lovers of old PC games imo. I actually like their system better than steam

Yeah I got it off there and I just got the collection in the mail. They sent me the 12+ rated (not us) edition in a DVD case version which is still sealed. Thinking about leaving it sealed and just collecting it. And steam sucks when it comes to ports (like there sega genesis ports and old games)

EDIT: I ended up opening it and installing it to go ahead and give it a go to check it out. Turns out the kings quest 6 on it actually has all the audio and is the same game I wanted! Kinda makes me sad actually since I got it on GOG. However, the only downfall I see so far is the first KQ. They replaced the original with the lame version (imo). Oh well I guess, still not completely disappointed with it.

I have the third companion and it's a cool read every once and awhile. But it's not the same as the games.

Did you know King's Quest I sold more game guides than it did game copies? :P

Yes! :D Al Lowe said something about that in an interview once. :P

Belated, but I played through KQ6 (Amiga version) with the Companion as my guide and did perfectly fine!  Only thing is of course that the Amiga version was altered a bit for space constraints, so I had to use my initiative a bit in terms of figuring out WHAT was removed, but the guide was brill!  Also using the original instruction manual to solve the Cliffs of Logic was absolutely mind-blowing.

I will second any recommendation to get the GOG sets of the KQ games (they seem to go on sale quite a bit, but I paid full price for all three sets and it was worth it), although I would perhaps recommend emulating them through SCUMM instead.  With regards to KQ6, that'll give you the hi-res character portraits with the CD voices, and in terms of the earlier games, you can choose a different sound set if you don't want to listen to the bleepy noise versions.
