Louisiana Night

Sounds interesting, but I doubt that I'd like the book.

P.S. I should have looked at the author. I kept getting a book about aliens.  XD

? Which book did you end up finding?

Speaker for the Dead by Ender Wiggins.

The strange thing is, that they're trying to sell me a book by the author you named.

XD Ender (or Andrew) Wiggins is the main character in the book. And, in the book, he also writes a book he signs as "Speaker For the Dead" which is about the aliens on the planet featured in the real life book.

I get the feeling that the person who wrote whatever site you landed on was a little confused?

Him, and me too.

The "real life book" has aliens in it?

Jeysie

Yeah. It deals with Andrew travelling to one of Earth's colony planets in his "Speaker For the Dead" capacity, where the colonists have discovered there's another sentient species also on the planet. (Only the second alien species that humanity has discovered.) The novel deals with the ramifications of relating with the aliens, as well as Andrew unravelling the mysteries of the colonists' relations between themselves.

I'm guessing that I'd need  to read the first one, to really understand this one(the 2nd?). The one about the destruction of the first contacted alien species?

Jeysie

I *would* recommend reading the first book, er, first, because it's a great novel, and yeah, it would add some nuances to the second (and the rest) novels. But it's not necessary to, I don't think, to understand the second book.

If I can find it cheap(under $10), I might buy it(1st or 2nd). It sounds like an interesting book/series, different than what I normally read, but interesting.

*logs out*

Questing Character

Is the first one in the series Ender's Game?  I have that one, I wasn't really aware that there were sequels until quite recently though, and I'm not sure what the names of those books are...

Jeysie

Yep. There's:

Ender's Game
Speaker For the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

Then there's the... parallel-sequels, I guess you could call them, that are his most recent novels. I haven't had time to read those yet, so I don't recall the titles off-hand. :P

Thanks for telling me. I thought Xenocide was the first in the series.

P.S. Are we taking over Cat's thread?

Questing Character

Taking it over...again?  Yeap, I think so! XB

I think ya'll are too! *pouts*

BUT, I love books too!  In fact, I never go anywhere without one (unless, of course, I've currently read all the books I've had my hands on).  Favorite authors include: Dee Henderson, Lori Wick, Terri Blackstock, and Liz Curtis Higgs.  How about you guys?  (see, we can bring it back around to me and my likes and dislikes :P)

Hmm. What sort of genre do you like, Koko? I don't recognize any of those authors off-hand.

As for me... heh, you probably could guess the sort of authors I like. Orson Scott Card is my best fave... ;) Also, Ray Bradbury, Robin Cook, Isaac Asimov, Michael Crichton, Peter David, Douglas Adams.

Actually, all of those are Christian authors.  Dee Henderson and Terri Blackstock are AWESOME because they are GREAT at writing mysteries!  I really didn't care for mysteries, murders, etc in books until I picked up their books.

I did this for Kimmie's thread, and I would be a jerk if I didn't do this for dear Cat.

So, random unrelated to discussion post for Cat:

I really have no clue!!  It may have something to do with how comfortable I felt with you after our first chat (the second, my ranting about a prof! :P).  But really, don't ask me...just doesn't seem logical! :P  I think a lot of the "tough" act you put on is just that, an act!  I have never seen you EXTREMELY angry (of course, I wouldn't want to anyway). But on top of all that: I lubs you anyway, James, and you know it!

How could I forget about Rowling??  She's awesome.  I enjoy Tolkien's LoTR, but I haven't gotten around to reading anything else by him besides The Hobbit.  Some of it's pretty hard reading, and when I read, I definitely like for it to be light!

Stephen R. Lawhead is a great author.  Mostly though, my favorites have already been mentioned.
