I never understood why everyone hates Myst so much. It's kind of what got me hooked on adventure gaming way back when.

Really? Because I've never met anyone else who had anything bad to say about Myst. It's sort of held as sacred and I feel like I'm the only person I've ever met who doesn't care for it.

My basic complaints are that it's lonely, tedious to navigate (I didn't really understand how things linked up until realMyst), and the learning curve at the beginning is WAY too steep. The rest of the game is fairly intuitive, or at least fair, but the entire bit at the beginning to get the islands to show up just didn't make any sense. I don't particularly like being set free with no sense of direction. I'm fine not knowing how to do something but I get annoyed when I don't know what I'm even trying to do.

However, thanks to Dilandau, I'm more invested in the continuing story and characters of Myst than the gameplay.

I have the first and third game in the Myst series, I can honestly say I'm not very fond of them :\
