That is indeed Tigroat. He and Unique were to be companions for Alexander and Rosella, respectively, in Part 2. Sort of like Cedric but actually useful and integral to the plot, instead of being an annoying side character who just yammers useless warnings.

Poor Graham. Cedric shows no mercy.

Couldn't speak to that guy resembling Hexen on purpose or not, but it's the first time I've heard of it, so I'm pretty sure it's coincidental.

It's not the first time that's happened. I recall there being a debate on this forum a while ago about some storybook that allegedly plagiarized Mordack's design for one of its characters, despite the fact that Mordack has such a generic appearance that it could've been anybody.

I know César mentioned the possibility of using some of these characters in new games - I don't know if that's still being considered, or if Phoenix will develop more original games now that they have switched focus to publishing. I hope so!
At least they intend to make Cognition 2:

It was VASTLY too ambitious. For just about ANY project, much less a first one!
How many pages were in the first 'Design Bible' (Jane Jensen's argot)? I vaguely remember more than 1K. Am I right?

Somehow, I doubt that Tigroat will make an appearance in Cognition 2... ;)

Yeah, I was going to say, the chances of a tiger/goat mutant showing up in the more grounded world of Cognition is very unlikely.

Also, Signore Buchelli...you don't need to double post. Double posting is looked down upon, as all it does is needlessly inflate your post count and prevent other people from getting a word in. The Wanderer there was I think going to be the human form of a zodiac sign. Not a big role, though. I won't say much more about that since that plot, albeit a different version, is part of Episode 5. Yes, those zodiac signs in the first 4 eps keep showing up for a reason!

Well, I'd like to see Tigroat show up in a future project.  I love the character design.  :)

I actually thought the Wanderer was the desert spirit from KQ VII but cool design anyways.  It'll be interesting to see the final version though.

The Wanderer couldn't be Colin Farwalker. Those deserts aren't the same one. Eldritch and Serenia aren't the same area. The Wanderer is the skeleton in 5, the one where you find the boot.

Can I buy Eldritch and Etheria being part of the World of Daventry? Yes. But in the same place near Serenia's desert? No. The landscape is completely different, the creatures are different, neither Valanice or Rosella recognize where they are. It'd be really anticlimactic to have them be separated... and have them know "Oh! I'm in a place I recognize! I know where to go from here! I'll be out of here in no time!"

I'm thinking that when TSL's final episode gets released, along with the nine-part rough draft, I'm going to be looking for ways to include Tigroat and Unique in my little TSL "novelization." Maybe even include them in earlier stories. The way I see it, the more, the merrier, because it means my little playground gets that many more characters to work with. If nothing else, TOG's KQ gives me some new Daventry inhabitants to show up in my take on KQ1. As it is, the cast of characters in my Wizard and the Princess story is almost entirely made up, save for a couple of pre-existing characters. I can't promise I'll include every single concept art character, but Tigroat and Unique will most certainly make the cut.

*nods in agreement*

What's funny is I actually have several ideas for KQ fanfics, all of them taking place in the TOG universe (or if it turns out to not fit plot wise with what we already have so far in terms of what we've seen in the released chapters, an AU) and one of them is indeed dealing with the events of KQ1 in the TOG universe with a Compassionate!Graham as the main character, with him choosing Compassion at all points of the story.

You mean Graham's not going to be like how he was in that DeviantART picture you showed me where he vowed to kill everything that got in his way like an uncivilized barbarian?

Ideas 1, 5 and 10 sound pretty complicated, so you'd better hold off on those until you've got more experience under your belt. Write some of the other ones first, the simple, short and sweet ones so that you're properly prepared.

Also...

2. Achaka Lives AU. Have Achaka survive the Well, become a Knight alongside Graham and have them rise through the ranks together as best friends. Non-Slash fic.

...thank God. I'm sick to death of slash fics. It shouldn't be a requirement in a story that everyone get paired up with everyone else. Slash fics are some of the most deplorable pieces of writing this world has ever seen. Have you heard of the one that paired up Obi-Wan Kenobi with Darth Maul? Gah, my brain needed bleach after seeing that.

Actually I'm of the opinion that slash fic, or any pairing, CAN be well done if you satisfy certain criteria for me- Have the characters meet in canon and actually interact in said canon (no random crossovers), have the pairing make some sort of in-universe sense (so no pedophilia, no incest, no characters paired up that don't like eachother for X canonical reasons, and the characters have to have established personalities), build it up nice and slow so it's believable (I'm all for love at first sight, but there has to be more than just that after the lovers lock eyes because that's eventually going to wear off) though that's good advice for any relationship otherwise we question "Why are they together/friends?" and have some sort of conflict that keeps the relationship from the perfect answer to everything in the world (I'm not saying stuff like Romeo and Juliet, but like say, "Let's go save the world first, THEN we'll get married, okay?"). Oh, and if the characters are already in relationships, don't bash their SOs and turn them evil just so your pairing can be together.

And even then, there's actually only, like, three stories about Graham and Achaka as a couple, and only one of them is badly written (because the setup/setting was weird and awkward, there was no explanation given as to why and how Achaka survived and there wasn't much to the story besides that.) One of them is a oneshot called "The Dragon's Cave" and that story was very subtle and slow about it, (no declarations of love, no sudden sexy times, no kisses, just a couple points in the story when things are calmer where one thinks the other is good looking and Achaka staying by Graham's bedside holding his hand until he wakes up) and dealt moreso with them trying to get out of the cave than them getting together which I liked. The other is a planned series (I think it's just called "Achaka Lives AU") that's more recent called "To Be A Knight" and again, is more slow and easy about it and there's definitely more substance to the story than just them getting together (which hasn't even happened yet and Graham is actually bi in this story) and it's more focused on characters in general and how the world changes in this timeline because Achaka survived. Like for instance, Manny is actually redeemed.

But of course, just because I don't ship them (as you can probably tell, I'm more of a Graham/Neese shipper) doesn't mean I can't recommend these stories. But I still get what you mean, as sometimes people are very insistent on shipping EVERYONE even when it doesn't make sense. Sometimes it's a little excessive! I can understand your point against it, because a lot of stories aren't well done at all, but there are good ones if you dig.

Still can't say I blame people for doing that, since the charactization in-game is pretty well done and it can be feasible if done right. Plus, Achaka has some very good looking legs!

Personally I think Mary Sues are worse than any slash fic. Kinda surprised that there aren't any in the KQ fandom.

I know, yeah, some of those probably will be oneshots. I had another written down but I've already completed that one, so that's one down (it's called "Going Home" and deals with Graham outright quitting after Achaka's death, not listening to Manny as he tries to stop him, not my greatest work but not my worst either, and I do think I should go back to it someday and redo it here and there). And you can tell the "Lovesick Graham" one was written down pre-chapter three anyway.

But still, unless you mean experience as in this specific world setting, I've been writing fanfic for over a decade now, but it's only been the past 3-4 years where I can look back on stuff I've written and not cringe. And because I actually accept concrit, I can only get better as time goes on.

Oh yeah, another idea I had was a genderswap universe which really is kind of obvious what that is- either characters are replaced by their partners or just switched genders, so while Graham is a girl (Giselle? What would be the female version of the name Graham, I wonder?), instead of meeting Wente in town, she'd meet Bramble instead.

Graham is actually bi in this story

Of course he is. Nothing like changing somebody's sexuality to completely assassinate their character. It's fine if, in the canon, they're already established like that. It's another thing completely to change them for the sake of "I really want this character to be with this other character they're not attracted to in canon just because I'm really fascinated by LGBT people and want to represent them." Just like the decision to make Sulu openly gay in Star Trek Beyond. Even George Takei called bullsh*t on that decision, saying that you shouldn't make a character gay just because the actor playing them is. Has Neil Patrick Harris ever played a homosexual role? And why is Sebastian Stan always playing homosexual parts even though he himself clearly isn't? (Yes, I'm aware the Winter Soldier isn't gay. I'm talking about Sebastian Stan's previous filmography.)

But, enough about that. That's my little rant over with. I'm not trying to push down LGBT people, so if anyone took my rant the wrong way and wants to argue with me about that, their cries will be falling on deaf ears because I'm not going to debate this subject matter further.

Long story short, if you're going to write a romance story about Graham, the correct choice, the smart choice, the only choice, is pairing him up with Valanice.

...Okay, fine. Don't believe me when I tell you that it's well written then. Better they go that route than just shove Valanice out of the picture entirely, which judging from the "Graham is bi" thing established in the AO3 tags, I'd imagine their plan is to have him obviously fall for Valanice and Achaka just be like his closest friend over the years. I don't support the pairing either, but I'm not against it's portrayal if it's written well. Of course in canon, that's never established because Achaka's kinda dead. It's just an interesting little take on what could be, and honestly one of the many ways you could take it.

If Achaka survived his encounter, what would happen? How would things change? How would stories be handled? How would relationships pan out differently than in canon?

I would ask, "How would you do it then?" but I doubt you intend for everyone's favorite archer to survive in your universe either, especially when you said it's going to be a darker take on the series anyway.

And now I'm curious about what you're planning for your series in general. Yeah, it's going to be darker, but what else are doing? What else are you changing? I'm intrigued!

Actually, Sebastian Stan doesn't always play gay characters.  He was on Once Upon A Time prior to dating star Jennifer Morrison, and his character Jefferson/The Mad Hatter was clearly not gay.  Jefferson had a daughter with his dead ex-wife and clearly had a thing for Emma and was attracted to her and her mama, Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard

Offhand, I know both Vee and Neese could either-or be Valanice, but I always saw Neese being her (and that's how I personally play it) first in looks, and her personality is so much like Rosella, but one could argue a possible off-hand romance with her BFF Vee (just tossing that in there :) )

I believe it can be well written. It's just unlikely, especially in KQ's very traditional fantasy world. It's not like Game of Thrones where every behavior even slightly deviant from the norm is placed front and center to make for a more intense experience. It's just that I've seen way too many fanfics where someone in the canonical pairing dies horribly, or gets divorced, or turns out to be a massive a-hole, all so the author can shoehorn their forced pairing into it. One of the worst offenders I've seen by far is fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanting Hawkeye's wife and kids to die so he can get together with Black Widow instead. It comes across as really tasteless, selfish and tacky. It doesn't help that Hawkeye is almost twice as old as Black Widow.

If Achaka survived his encounter, what would happen? How would things change? How would stories be handled? How would relationships pan out differently than in canon?

Actually, I might keep Achaka around for a just little bit longer in my treatment. We'll see how things play out.

And now I'm curious about what you're planning for your series in general. Yeah, it's going to be darker, but what else are doing? What else are you changing? I'm intrigued!

If there's one thing that doesn't transition well from one medium to another, it is, unfortunately, puzzle solving. National Treasure is a good example how something that would make a good adventure game doesn't work on the big screen, because watching other people solve puzzles by themselves is frankly quite boring to watch. I'm still planning on making each of the main characters a thinker, except for Connor, who, of course, will solve his problems by breaking them. There's always room for a Worf in the cast.

But yeah, lighter on the puzzle-solving elements, heavier on the action. Not every book in the series will have massive Lord of the Rings-style battle scenes in them, nor should they, but action scenes are a necessity with the direction I'm taking things. My treatment of The Wizard and the Princess has a considerably large climax on multiple fronts, nothing like the game itself, which has one of the most insulting anti-climaxes I've ever seen. And that's not all. Imagine, if you will, a written adaptation of KQ2+, wherein Graham has just barely escaped Sharkee territory, but has the entire Sharkee army on his tail. The army of the Mer-people comes out to fight them, and Graham is caught in the middle, still holding the stolen trident, but about to be ensnared by the Sharkee King's grasp.

It's certainly a lot more exciting than defeating a Yeti by throwing a pie in its face and letting sheer dumb luck do the rest.

Note, however, that I will not be deliberately resorting to gory content. There are plenty of works of fiction out there that have an unbelievable amount of violence without ever showing a drop of blood. The Dark Knight trilogy is ten times more violent than the Tim Burton Batman movies, but there's not a whole lot of blood to be seen.

I also watch the animated Star Wars cartoons--The Clone Wars and Rebels--and there's an awful lot that they get away with without showing any blood. The Clone Wars alone has someone being tortured to death with electricity onscreen, someone falling on a spike from a great height and getting impaled on it, numerous bone breaking including a neck snapping, shooting and beating unarmed hostages, parasitic worms that slither into people's noses, the aftermath of a bombing including a severed hand, zombies, occasional dismemberment, and someone being tortured via black magic by having boils appear on their face, and later by having a voodoo doll of themselves getting stabbed in the head with a needle.

Rebels is considerably tamer, but still has a scene where two characters are beheaded simultaneously with only a quick camera cutaway, a character committing suicide by falling into a burning inferno, another character getting chopped in half, another character almost successfully being forced to slit their own throat, and yet another character gets their eyes burned out. Suffice it to say, Rebels is probably the darkest and most violent TV series to get a Y-7 rating since Ren and Stimpy.
I have no mouth, and I must scream.

 There we go, that's perfectly fair! Though admittedly, fanfiction always takes the unlikely and makes it likely, for better or worse anyway. Shouldn't be only restricted to only what's canon, because sometimes it's more fun to elaborate or diverge from it. But still, I see your point. I think the same thing whenever I see Harry Potter or Avatar The Last Airbender fanfic, so I know how that feels!

And yeah, that's exactly why I got standards when it comes to shipping (slash or not). I actually did elaborate on said standards earlier... but unfortunately I lost said post when the page reloaded (was typing on phone) and had to start over again, decided to say "screw this!" and just sum up the jist of what I wanted to say, which was...

Makes logical sense to me. So long as they're likable and get growth as characters, I don't care how they solve problems. People loved it in QFG, after all. Aw man, I haven't watched National Treasure in YEARS...

*nods* I can picture that. Nice description. And now I'm off to go look up videos of WatP to refresh myself and see what you're talking about in context.

*nods* I agree wholeheardly with that. Even back when I was writing my KQ5 fic, I was planning on expanding a bit on the Yeti scene. For my story, it was going to be an action scene, like a boss fight. Graham would be using the hammer mostly, and the pie would be a last resort because said hammer cracked away part of the cliff and the Yeti grabbed onto Graham's legs because it wanted to take him down with them. Cue pie and gravity. And Graham's actually injured from that, because the Yeti had sharp claws that dug into his legs, though it's not grevious, just hurts a ton and it drew blood. He avoids going into the seawater when he gets on the boat, because saltwater + wounds = Ow.

Thank you. So few people, trying to be dark in their stories, realize that. I'm trying to do the same thing myself. But even still, not so dark you can't see any hope, that there are no happy endings or heroes or moments of peace and friendship and love within the struggle to complete their mission. I'm glad both of us realize that! :)

A good example of how violence can be used and abused in video games is to compare the new Doom game that just came out with a game like The Darkness. Doom's violence is so unbelievably over-the-top--perhaps tied with Mortal Kombat X as the most violent game in years--that it's impossible to truly be unnerved by it. It helps that nearly all of the violence is directed at literal demons from hell, which from my point of view, are just as acceptable villains as Nazis are. By the end of the game, you'll have seen so much visual insanity that you will be desensitized to video game gore of any kind.

Meanwhile, The Darkness is less bloody, though still very violent. The thing is that the horror in The Darkness doesn't come from the sight of blood or cheap jump scares. The horror comes from its unbelievably disturbing subject matter and gritty tone, dealing with issues like living a life in the mob, losing your loved ones to the most despicable people you can imagine, family members betraying you and putting out a bounty for your head, being mentally raped and made into a host for a creature far scarier than any demon you'll find in Doom, successfully committing suicide multiple times only for said creature to bring you back to life because it's not finished with you yet, and a purgatory in which damned souls are forced to participate in World War II battles for all of eternity. For those reasons and more, The Darkness is, well, one of the darkest video games I've ever seen.

And then you have fanfiction that attempts to take a family-friendly video game like, say, Mega Man, and turn it into horror by...making the robots bleed a lot.

For context, this video was recorded on a stream by one guy playing a fanmade Mega Man game--and doing an exceptional job at it, too--while another guy chimed in to read a Mega Man Creepy Pasta that attempted to turn this thing...

...into a Lovecraftian abomination. It works about as well as you would expect.

Oh my goodness, yes. I know the infamy of certain Creepypastas, including Yellow Devil.

I swear to God, if I see one more Pokemon Creepypasta/fanfic dealing with Lavender Town and that stupid song at all, I swear I'm going to scream.

I feel much the same way about Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction. I swear, if I see one more Sonic.exe spinoff...then there's Slenderman...Five Nights at Freddy's...incredibly not-scary takes on Silent Hill (even the official Silent Hill series itself isn't that scary past the fourth game)...the list goes on. And then there's a Creepy Pasta of the scariest video game of them all...

COOKING MAMA! Yes, somebody actually wrote this and thought it was good enough to post on the Internet for thousands of people to read.
