Today is November 11th.  This day is important because it marks the end of World War One.  The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918.

Since, this day has been made a holiday (in Canada) called Remembrance Day.  It is to allow us to remember and show our respects to the soldiers who have served in the times of war.  To thank them, for allowing us the freedoms and quality of life we have today.

I know other countries may call this day a different day, but the sentiment is the same.

So hug and thank a soldier today.

For more information (Canada specific, but you get the point):

I know michael was on the navy and you (james) were on the army, so I may be way off hand around here BUT... :P I wanted to hug you both <3 you know... to celebrate the day and stuff.

we don't have that here so, I had no idea about it.

whoever who wants to support this thread try to make it unpolitical, the brave spirit of soldiers as well as their achievements, should not be related to politics or such comments.

We call it Veterans' Day 'round these parts.

I don't really know anyone well who's currently in the Army, although Harrison knows a couple ladies who are. I do know a few folks who used to be soldiers, however. I have respect for them... I could never bring myself to enter into combat the way they do.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Here in the States, today was called Veteran's Day.

They were reading letters written home by the soldiers today on the news...I was bawling my eyes out :(

*huggles back*

The day is very special to me, as my Grandfather fought in World War Two, as well, my father served 37 years in the military, and I served 4.

Thank you.

Remember to give Joe a hug, too!  He's been to Bosnia twice and he also gave me a home for awhile! :)

Both my grandads were in WW2, one in Germany and one in France and also one of my grandads was in the gulf war although I cant seem to remember where...

I'm glad I read this thread, it seems so much is forgotten once is all done and dusted. I could quote about 100 poems about now after doing 5 years of war poetry (GRRRR!) but my head is spinning, so maybe tommorow hehe.

This day is also special to me, because I have lost relatives( albiet before I was born), in wars.
My Great Grandfather was in WW1, and he eventually died from mustard gas, and I did have relatives that fought and died in the American Civil War.
She's back. She's proud. She will overcome!

This one is particularly famous in Canada...

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Just look at me,
I'm living proof that,
TIME HEALS NOTHING!

Wow. Can I even post in this thread without it becoming political? :-X

We don't really mark Remembrance Day here, we have our own Memorial Day in April or May - it's the day before independence day. We have tons of war songs which are played on that day, but I wouldn't degrade them by attempting to translate any :-\

Hug a soldier? sure, next time I see either of my brothers ::)
