I know snails can switch gender, but can caterpillars too? If not, it's most definitely the snail.

Wait wait! If a snail has no shell, it dies. Instant win for the caterpillar.

I take it ye haver never seen a shell-less snail. I saw many on my daily walks to (highschool when it was still early in the morning and the sun was not able to reach them yet. Because when they're shell-less, sunlight will kill them, although technically speaking it'll be the dehydration that will kill them.

Caterpillars are longer than snails usually; it could at least wrap its body around the snail and choke it even without limbs.

Caterpillars are creepy... snails are gross but they taste good.  So the caterpillar wins because a chef comes along and cooks up some tasty escargot.
