VI. Pliny the Elder was also involved in an early world-changing diplomatic rift. Back in those days, the Chinese fortune cookie was still in its developmental stage, and it was quite often that diners would get the wrong fortune. One time, after Pliny and a dinner companion finished their Egg Foo Yung (Pliny had initially ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan, but changed his mind), they opened their cookies. Pliny's fortune read "Your brother-in-law Antony's mechanical wheat thresher is not as safe as it looks." Pliny did not have a brother-in-law named Antony, so he threw the fortune away and scoffed. Only years later did Pliny's dining companion that day (a fellow who became known as "Cassius the Stumpy" due to an unfortunate accident with a mechanical wheat thresher) realise that what had happened is that he and Pliny each accidentally been served the other's fortune cookie. (The fortune that Cassius read, by the way, was "If Vesuvius is erupting, do not jump in a boat to go see it.") When Cassius went public about this mix-up (shortly after Pliny's unexpected death during a volcanic eruption), Rome cut off all trade with China, and as we all know, the relationship was not to be re-established until Marco Polo made his famous journey some centuries later. The Chinese reaction to this suspension of trade was even more severe, imposing stringent restrictions on the messages that get inserted into fortune cookies so that nowadays they have been so watered down and we don't get the kind of helpful premonitional advice the ancient Romans used to get.
