To me, the feelings experienced following the death and rebirth of KQIX/The Silver Lining are nicely summed up by the following quotes:

KQIX shut down - Hindenburg disaster

It burst into flames! … It's burning and it's crashing! It's crashing, terrible!  Oh my! Get out of the way, please! It's burning, bursting into flames and is falling on the mooring mast, and all the folks between... oh, this is terrible. This is one of the worst catastrophes in the world! … It's a terrific crash, ladies and gentlemen, it's smoke and it's flames, now, and the frame is crashing to the ground, not quite to the mooring mast…Oh, the humanity!

TSL reborn - Miracle on Ice

Eleven seconds, you got ten seconds, the countdown going on right now...Morrow up to Silk...five seconds left in the game! Do you believe in miracles? YES!!!
Once the votes are read, the decision is final. The person voted out will be asked to leave the Tribal Council area immediately. I'll read the votes...

You see, it's not just a game, no matter what outsiders may say of it. It has shaped my life in a profound way, as it has many other users on this site. And your continued efforts to revive the game have always left me in awe.

Hello Everyone!
This is my first post to the forums. I'm so elated that the project is back on, that I'm making everyone here a 'present' of sorts. Hopefully it'll be done in time for Christmas. Keep your eyes peeled for a link to it.

Cheers to all.

I think I speak for all of the fans when I say that King's Quest has touched us in an indescribable--but profound--way. A lot of who I am today was shaped by the lessons in the game during my childhood and adolescense. It instilled in me a belief that any task is solveable--with the proper amount of effort and perseverance, and even cleverness. Furthermore, the philosophy of love embedded in the game was often touching, and continues to touch me in everyday life.

You see, it's not just a game, no matter what outsiders may say of it. It has shaped my life in a profound way, as it has many other users on this site. And your continued efforts to revive the game have always left me in awe.

I understand your point...but a wee bit over the top for a video game series.  I sincerely hope the lessons in life came from elsewhere besides an 8-bit king hunting for three treasures.  I'm fairly certain that life would go on unscathed if this game was never made...just less exciting.

I doubt anyone here would make fun of your tears, Matt.

hehe, that was just me being silly. Don't mind me too much. :)

Well, I stand corrected. I guess I don't speak for everyone when I claimed that this has positively affected our lives. :)

Seriously, though, if psychological studies and the media are justified in claiming that violent video games such as Doom result in the desensizing of today's youth and a corresponding increase in overall violence, then I'm more than justified in pointing to the positive impacts that King's Quest had on my life and the lives of many other players. Don't discount the psychological impact of play and games (especially educational games) on a child.

King's Quest and TSL are games designed with thought, planning, and a goal for challenging your mind and presenting a great story to follow.  However, those kinds of studies really have no justification.  They're just an excuse for why people do bad things when plenty of other people play those games or watch those movies and DON'T hurt anyone.

Naturally KQ had an impact on everyone here, and TSL is the hope for the future in adventure gaming.  However you feel though, it's still just a game...someone will do something great and bad in life, but I'm fairly certain neither will have anything to do with the linings that are silver, king's that quest, or demons from hell.

I dunno... games, like any event experienced in life, can have an impact on the viewer which may change their outlook on life and the way they deal with it. Personally, I'd say that at least partially, how I look at the world, was shaped by Quest for Glory. Wages of War (part 3) specifically, with the way Rakeesh explained the philosophys and ambitions of the Paladin. The lesson of following the right path, rather than the lawful or socially acceptable path - being particularly strong.

Granted, it wasn't my only influence in that reguard (my father, who grew up with the ideals of John F. Kennedy and the Civil Rights movement was probably the most influencial to me), but it was a damned strong reinforcement.

In a way, the King's Quest IX project is an example of that as well. Pheonix Online Studios was well outside of the law when they started/re-started the project, and they knew it. Yet their efforts brought a great deal of hope and joy to many people all over the world. It wasn't the lawful thing to do, but it was the RIGHT thing to do. In the end, while they did follow the law, they fought to get the project approved and to make Vivendi Universal also see that it was the right decision.

POS did something quite amazing, and their efforts along with VU's cooperation have had a subtle, yet profound effect on the game development industry. If this turns out favorably for VU (and I believe it will), it sets a precedence for other game producing corperations to follow - allowing more and more fan projects of other games - which will in turn make other fan communities happy.

So yes, I can see at least partial justification in Matt's point.

It is great news to read. I have been waiting for so long, go ahead

I agree! The people that are violent in RL would have already had thoughts of being violent (or already are violent). Most violent videogames are a good way to release anger. :D
