I don't get it.  Things like this aren't supposed to happen.  All logic says we are supposed to be dead.
On this website, logic doesn't apply!  ;) If you keep optimistic and good things can and do happen!  ;D ;D ;D

Will it be in consoles (PS3, XBOX, NGC...) too?

Unless Vivendi releases it commercially, it can't be on consoles. There is no such thing as a free, legal console game, so while I guess POS could technically release it on consoles illegally, everyone would know now that  they have tons of media coverage and a deal with VUG, and they'd get in a lot of trouble. It would be quite stupid actually.

That's not quite true. I believe it's only illegal to -SELL- a console game without licencing. However homebrew and other forms of freeware are perfectly acceptable within certain limits set by the copyright holders of the console you're planning to develop for. Sony, for instance - has released two development studios for their PlayStation line. The "Yarozee" I believe, was the one for the PSX - and a limited edition Linux PS2 Development kit was made available for the public.

I don't believe that Microsoft is openly supportive of homebrew games and applications on the Xbox/Xbox360 - however they're generally not very adamant about going after homebrew developers and modders (so long as they don't try to access XboxLive) as I'm pretty sure they use ideas originating in the homebrew community to test market features for their peripherals and next-generation hardware.

Nintendo... well, they've always been a very controlling company - as evident by their choice of game media these past few generations. There really is no substancial homebrew community for the GameCube or N64 - nor will there be for the Revolution I presume.

Sega though, has really been very open and supportive of the home-brew community since their withdrawl from the hardware market. They've openly supported home development as a way to keep the Dreamcast legacy alive, and ocassionally some of these projects still end up seeing commercial release in Japan. (I.E., If Vivendi bought the rights to a TSL DC port and tried to sell it) It is, after all, a machine built for entertainment - and since Sega no longer makes any real money off of it - they feel their fans and supporters should enjoy it as they see fit.

Things may have changed since the Sammy merger - so a call to Sega of America or Sega of Japan (if you can speak Japanese) would still be prudent. However, I doubt Sammy has much concern on the topic considering how strong the DC homebrew community still is.

So on the plus side - Sega would be a much easier company to deal with concerning these matters than either Sony, MS, or Nintendo. (Expecially since their consoles are still in production) That kind of fan-oriented easy-going buisness attitude is just how they are - which may be part of why I never remember hearing Ken Williams (or other Sierra employees/Sierra publications) complain about Sega the way he did about Nintendo. In a way, they shared the same basic philosphy.

On the downside: The Dreamcast is getting harder and harder to find. Not many people have one, and it may be a bit difficult to gain access to a cheap used model since collectors have been buying them up recently. Enough so, that Sega is re-issuing refurbished Dreamcasts with new-erlease pack-in game. (Japan only, though, unfortunately)

Does anyone know what the system requirements are? I have a pretty old computer, and I'd like to know if I'll still be able to play??

Dirk Delshire

I was so happy when I read it on your site that I jumped up a shouted.
I've been going to this site almost everyday starting in fall 2005.
I never really got excited enough to post on a site intil now.
So far as I know nobody really gave me a welcome though...   ::)

Any release of TSL onto a console system would have to conform to very specific standards set by both the publisher and the console manufacturer (Sony, Sega, Nintendo, Microsoft, etc...).  The game would have to pass through the QA department of both sectors as well, or at least the manufacturing QA.  This would result in work time for their employees, and would require the game to be priced accordingly.

Systems that are currently active will not support the free release of a title held under the jurisdiction of a Vivendi license.
It's peanut butter jelly time!

The system requirements haven't really been published yet, but you can try running the Torque Demo - it's a demo of the engine TSL is using, so if your computer can't run that, it's a pretty safe bet it won't be able to run the game either :-\

Andy

The 8 year old grandaughter of a friend was recently given an old laptop. I was happy to install KQ VI and VII on it for her to enjoy. Now she'll have another great game to look forward to in the future. The King's Quest series is one of a kind!

Moodyblues

That's so sweet, Andy!  :)  Be sure to install KQ IV once her typing speed goes up.

I second that, I loved KQ IV.  ;D

I second that too. King's Quest IV was the first game I played from the King'e Quest saga; and it is still my favorite one too.

Stan

I am so ready to play the Silver Lining -- Shadows part 1 that it is really hard to wait.  It seems like the exciting adventure games are now the ones that are free and fan-based like the Silver Lining and the King's Quest remakes by AGD.

TribeHasSpoken

The posts about KQIV should probably be in the adventure games section of the forum and let this thread remain dedicated to TSL. I'll leave these posts here for now, but if there are any more posts about KQIV I'll probably move them all into a thread in the Adventure section.
Once the votes are read, the decision is final. The person voted out will be asked to leave the Tribal Council area immediately. I'll read the votes...

Shadowfax

Just wanted to say a big "Well done chaps/chappesses" to you the KQ IX team (well...Silver Lining/Shadows team now!) for not giving up and keeping this entire program running...would be a galling waste for it to have been killed off now!  :)
When cities burn and armies turn,
and flee in disarray,
Cowards will cry 'tis best to fly
and fight another day.
But warriors know it in their marrow when they die and fall,
It is better to have fought and lost than not have fought at all.

A new journal entry on the latest progress would be most appreciated.  <hint hint>   ;)

A light from the shadows shall spring
Renewed shall be blade that was broken
The crownless again shall be king

I agree a 100% with Stan, who wrote:

What happened to the great initiative 'Art of the week' by the way? This hasn't been updated for a very long time. An occasional screenshot or model would defininately keep me quiet until the actual game is released!!!  :P

Say

Negotiations with VU have been given priority, because the launch of Shadows as well as the future of TSL depend on that. Obviously, this has been taking longer than we wished, but it's a must we should comply with this in order to commit to a real update in any form such as website- new art, media or the journal- new info, etc. Things are happening, we just need to be legally clear.

Sorry about any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
