Greetings to everyone who shouldst be deigned to read this:

This is most probably my last post on this forum. Recently, I was reading the Act of Settlement and the Protestant Succession and a copy of Edward VI's will, when I came across an interesting paragraph (something which I had already known), legally, my departure from this threade and forum couldst be considered as my abdication (which the aforementioned paragraph I hath edited to befit my case):

"That Queene Deloria having endeavoured to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between Monarch and people and by the advice of wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws; and having withdrawn herself out of this kingdom; has abdicated the government; and that the throne is thereby vacant."

Another thing I came across (which I also already had suspected) was that the Hannovers had and still have no claim to the throne, if anyone wishes to contest to this, they are free to do so. I will not present my evidence in this post, but anyone is free to contact me via email to discuss it.

Back on topic, as I do not wish civil war upon this kingdom and as I shall most likely not return and as Moodyblues (who was my erstwhile heir) hath departed from life, there remaineth the problem of my succession. In which case, I can only choose my own successor, having no heirs.

In this respect, I choose Petra Rocks as my successor, assuming he shall uphold the monarchy. He may consider this his thread if he wishes, or a mod can move this and make him his own thread. If he declineth to ascend, I leave the throne to my best knight, Shades. Shouldst he also decline, the throne shall go to Throckmortan, then Elessar and thereafter to Merlin or Cat (tis their choice who, but joint regency will not be an option for obvious reasons. ) Should both of them be unwilling to do so, the throne shall befall to Baggins and hereafter to Oldbushie or Raforever, both of them having humored and put up with me for such an inordinately long period of time that I feel compelled to mention them.

Henceforth, thou maye consider me abdicated, if I do not return. Should I return, those aforementioned were merely governing in my absence.

Yeah, I saw that earlier... the thing with cognoscere is that it's one of those weird verbs that is very particular. It can be used to mean "to be familiar with" or "to understand"... so when I used cognoscere in the multilingual chat, it wasn't literally to know but more to be familiar with or to understand Latin. To know something in particular or to know how to do something is scire (scire + an infinitive for "how to" statements). It's similar to saber vs. conocer in Spanish though I don't think the rules of usage are as rigid. Cognoscere in the perfect system does in fact mean to know (as the process of becoming acquainted with or getting to know is completed).

All that having been said, "Video et cognosco" would mean "I see and understand" or "I see and am becoming acquainted with" or "I see and am familiar with"... as a mantra I would think the first would make the most sense. Of course, cognoscere is a transitive verb: so it sort of begs the question what you understand. However, I'm gonna just go with the interpretation that you understand whatever it is that you're seeing.

That depends: what are you using it for in the sentence (ie- what function? subject, direct object, object of a preposition, indirect object, etc.)? Latin is a declined language: this means the nouns are inflected to match their grammatical function and usage.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you either want it as the subject or direct object...

subject:        veritas
direct object: veritatem

those are both nouns... In most cases, a given noun will have 12 forms: 6 singular and 6 plural not excluding syncreticisms (cases of the same ending). Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Ablative, and Vocative. The nominative is used for subjects and predicate nominatives, and the accusative is used for direct objects.

This is a bit of an oversimplification... but...

Nom. -> Subject: Veritas est. (Truth is.) and Predicate Nominative: Ea est veritas. (It is the truth.)

Gen. -> possession: ...veritatis bonus... (the good of truth or truth's good)

Dat. -> Indirect Object: Veritati id fecit. (He did it for truth. / He did truth it. -or more idiomatically- He did it for truth's sake.) (I had some difficulty trying to come up with a sentence in which truth would be an indirect object in English and not the object of a preposition....)

Acc. -> Direct Object: Veritatem amat. (He loves the truth.)

Abl. -> object of the preposition: ...de veritate... (...from the truth..)

Voc. -> direct address: Veritas, ubi es? ((a little personification) Truth, where are you?)

...which doesn't look too simple, but the cases aren't 1:1 with functions like this suggests... all of these are singular noun forms...

As another example, "Veritatem cognosco.": I "know" the truth.

Please translate (to the best of your ability) this phrase in Latin: "The truth shall set you free".

I don't care which conjugation, verb tense and grammar you pick, as long as you feel it is correct.
