Surely a state of total (tautological, yes, but how else am I to phrase it?) absolute power could only be reached by an omnipotent deity (or those claiming to be descended from one in rare cases) and they're considered "corrupt" by few. :P

Not at all. XD I just like reading of monarchs being deified but haven't studied it closely beyond the Ptolemaics, no. :P

and you can have absolute power of something without being omnipotent (as in, absolute within the confines of). Take dungeon masters, for example... :P
Indeed. XD Hence my tautologically writing "total absolute power". :P

Quote from: Louisiana Night on April 03, 2008, 08:53:31 AM(I believe you are referring to a flawless omnipotent being, or at least one with no or few major flaws).
Actually, I didn't think into it in much detail. Though even with flaws, I doubt I should ever have had the notion to associate "corrupt" with them. :) Having said that, of course we're all to be referred to as their "little playthings". ;P

Actually, I think a flawed invidual could possess omnipotence, and still not be corrupted by it. If one were to abstain totally from ever using that power, and just live out their natural life and die, their omnipotence would never have affected them.

Using the power, not possessing it, is what leads to corruption. Only a being who lacks flaws of any kind could ever use unlimited power without being, or becoming, corrupt. (ie, holy)

Quoteand... Neil's little playthings?

Wait... when did yall become my 'little playthings?'  ???

QuoteZeus=dirty old man=corrupt

I prefer the Norse 'gods.' They had flaws, but were noble about it.

mmmm... Our definitions differ here.

I see 'omnipotency' as the ability to do / cause /effect anything.
I would argue it doesn't necessarily encompass omniscience and / or omnipresence. A being with omnipotency could choose to 'become' omniscient, but wouldn't need to be this by default.

QuoteI can't make Jack Smith appear in Detroit unless I know who/what and where they both are).

Why would you need to know where Jack Smith is, prior to using you're omnipotency? Even then, I suppose all you'd need do is 'cause' him to appear in Detroit. Unless, you decided to move him manually.

Quoteand I would agree... except I have doubts that could be possible.

Yeah, I doubt any of us have the kind of willpower to abstain from such power. Perhaps if someone had the capability, and didn't know it, then my earlier post might have a chance to be tested...

Three cheers for random philosophy!!  ;D

EDIT:

Oh, that's true. If someone who was omnipotent and omniscient wanted to will away part of his knowledge, for a time, that would be possible. Another example would be if someone was omnipotent and omnipresent, they could will away their presence from a specified locale.

Actually, without moving into religion, Christianity believes these cases occur. Example being, God is omnipresent, but has decided not to be present in any form in Hell.

QuoteWith limited knowledge comes limited power.

But you wouldn't have limited knowledge. All you'd need do is will whatever prerequisite knowledge you 'needed' to perform whatever act, and away you go.

Also, if someone has the ability to do something, even if they arn't aware of whatever, arn't they still labelled as having 'that power?'

*moves further off into the realm of abstraction*  ::)

Quoteerm... but you'd eventually want to or try to do something you normally would be incapable of. Wouldn't you know then?

OK, what if you were a dimwhit, to boot?  8)

Quotebut is not God AWARE of all that goes on within Hell? In that sense, it could be said He is present (great... now what "presence" means is going to be debated, isn't it?). Although, if you have a scripture you wish to use, which I am unaware of, PM me.

No need. At this point we are primarily defining words. And I believe it states that He not only isn't present there, but also that He has "put it out of His mind." Whether we decide that He could have not been one, but been the other, is entirely up to us.

But, let's take a step back from that, for now. My apologies for complicating the matter.

Assuming you were making a counter-point to my previous statement (if you were not, quoting me was certainly a poor way of communicating your thought), it was made toward earthly (limited) power. More specifically, in reference to Cat's statement of enjoying power. You can't make a counter-point by redefining the meaning behind what I say. If you do that, you can explain away anything (or add credit to anything).

You associate power (omnipotence) with a lack of corruption then? ;P
It is a completely different thing from morality, honour, duty, and all things usually considered linked with a lack of corruption.

Example:
Zeus=dirty old man=corrupt :P

and... Neil's little playthings? XB

That's because she is such a beneficent Queen that she can't see how power could lead to corruption.

And we worship her for it.  ;)
