QuoteYes, if I want to make stone into gold, the changes required do not need to be known (simply willed). The problem is, for example, what if I don't know what gold IS?

How do we determine whether someone is infinitely powerful, or simply awesomely powerful?

(constraint questions, from most restrictive, to least)

1) Is it that there is something they cannot do?
2) Is it that there is something they cannot do, within a specified bracket of time?

3) Is it that there is something they refuse to do?
4) Is it that there is something they refuse to do, within a specified bracket of time?

5) Is it that there is something they will not do?
6) Is it that there is something they will not do, within a specified bracket of time?

I argue that the case of someone not possessing the knowledge of something, since they 'can' gain the knowledge of that something, and therefore do it, should the circumstance arise, would fall under (6,) should they not seek that particular knowledge.

Additionally, numbers 3-6, I believe, to not be disqualifiers for omnipotency.

Quoteone has more POTENTIAL power, the other more practical power).

/agree, and in the case of a non-omnipotent being, these two are different. For an omnipotent being who 'can' do whatever he likes at speeds that are faster than a moment, he can go from a 'potential' state, to a 'practical' state instantly. So. potential == practical in this case. There is never a time in which an omnipotent cannot do something. If knowledge is required, it can be gained so fast that it is known at the time necessary.

QuoteHe'd get angry, kick a rock, and him and the universe go boom.
Though, seriously, I think anyone (capable of basic human thought and awareness) would notice something, like, say, noticing a guy shot at him and he grabbed the arrow due to an automatic reflex.

Reminds me of Bruce Almighty. Don't make him mad! ;)

What if he was predispossed such that he would not accept that possibility. Willfully blind due to some variant of pride, for instance (or perhaps, a retardation?) I believe there are people that refuse to believe something, regardless of all evidence.

QuoteThough... food for thought. If you had the choice to be omnipotent (a person offered it to you, and the offer never expires), would you consider yourself omnipotent?

It actually says Merlin deleted it... but I'm not quite sure how that works. :P  Probably some error happened with splitting or something.

That'd be cool (particularly since I didn't do it in the first place!) but you never know with CC. Time doesn't have any affect in that thread. :P

XD I'm just going to leave it here in this thread, since ya'll are already conversing via PM :) And hopefully the philosophy of those posts won't end up killing my thread :P

QuoteWell, if it can actually be "won."

Doubt it. I suppose we could have our posts scored on logic, readability, and level of madness... (actually, that might be interesting...) ;)

QuoteWell, not the one about crackers... THAT was confusing.

Remember, my brother, the cake is a lie. Think on that.  ::)

QuoteWhat sort of answer is that?

Oh, very well... I think that since you can't accept omnipotency immediately, than there is atleast a brief moment in time where you are vulnerable. In other words, since you are bound by time for atleast the time it takes to think "I accept," then you are less than omnipotent. (if a truck swerves and hits you too quickly, you are dead regardless of the offer)

QuoteBoth have the potential pitfall of breaking the " no controversial topics" rule.

Since we arnt discussing religion/politics, I like to think of it as "Philosophy Lite."   :P

QuoteBasically, it comes down to a balance between freedom and control. Which will the mods choose this time? Stand by and find out!

Since we are almost purely in the realm of theory, and both of us are known quantities (you were a previous mod,) this topic won't likely go too far in itself. The real question is, will this thread either cause others to feel uncomfortable with the forum in general, or will it inspire people to start debates of a less restrained nature. In other words, are we going to be poor role models?

Of course, can the same be said for the "Adventure/RPG" thread, or anything else with a "1 vs 2" style?

I don't debate, I ramble with STYLE!

I showed up and spoke about suspicious cloaked people. So I disagree with mistrial.

Or was I called upon again? XD
