Hassan has become more of a merchant. The Ferry has now been turned into a business, and you can see that there's a ticket booth next to his ship.

This is also a piece of dialogue from chapter 2:

GRAHAM:    Did you always want to be a sailor?
HASSAN:    All of my life! It runs in the family. My father trained me how to sail this ferry, as did his father before him and so on. I’ve yet to make enough money to support a family, since I’ve been out of the business for so long. It may be a while before I have a son to teach, but hopefully I will someday. I’ve got enough life ahead of me.

So is he no longer the royal mariner? The castle of the crown is no longer supporting the ferry(so that even the most humble of citizens can ride it)? ...or is he collecting money on the side and double dipping into castle funds (by asking Graham to pay more money from the castle coffers)?

If anything it shows you depths of evil that Abdul Alhazred sank to if he not only closed the ferry down but stopped the castle from supporting it  :suffer:...
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

I think in those days, you could make more money from charging your own fees than from being government-subsidized. 8)

Nah, the government just taxed you more. ;)  :suffer:

Plus there is the whole issue without the royal ferry the kingdom is going to be seperated again, anytime Hassan refuses to travel LOL.

Sure the Crown can send communications via Djinnigram, and winged ones can just fly around to the other islands. The map is still in service. But your average citizen won't be able to get from island to island.

I guess this also means that the "most humble of citizens" that can't pay Hassan's "cough" exorbent "cough" prices are also stuck on the Island of crown now, as well.

It was a bit amusing how Hassan at first acts like the bag of coins is more than he has seen in a long time, but quickly resorts to say it isn't enough at all, and he'll have to be payed again in a few days.

It works in a bazaar, why not a dock.  ;D
