The Yonkey goes to Europe thread!

Recently, my sister and I went to Europe!  We went to London, Paris, Rome, Germany, Belgium and Holland.  It was our first time overseas, and we don't usually travel that much.  Needless to say, it was quite an experience. :P

Weather-wise, London and Paris weren't that great.  It was cold and rainy for the majority of our stay there, but Rome definitely made up for it with awesome hot & sunny weather the entire time.  In the other countries, the weather kept fluctuating.  So, out of all the places we went to, Rome was definitely the best.

The other odd thing was that the stores all closed pretty early in England and France (around 6 or 7pm).  That was a bit annoying, since we're used to stores being open until 9pm during the week.  In France, restaurants only seemed to be open from 7-9pm, so after a long day of doing stuff, there'd be very few things open after 10pm.

Rome was a completely different story.  The hotel room and staff were much better than the other hotels we stayed at.  Also, everything in Rome was walking distance so there was no need to take the metro anywhere.  The city itself was gorgeous and picturesque, and better than Paris in my opinion.

Germany onwards we stayed with family, so we did less sightseeing and more relative-visiting.  But it was great because they made the best food, and they drove us almost everywhere!

EDIT:  The photos are now moved from here to my Facebook page.

Yup, that's my sister.  Some people asked me to take their pic, so they took ours in return. ;D

I think those buildings were Embassies or something, but I can't remember now.  As for why, because they looked cool! 8)

Have you been to Bruges before, CC?

XD  Did you see the pic of the Swiss guards?  Our tour guide said they don't speak any Italian or English, just Deutsch.  And if anyone knew Deutsch, they could talk to them.  I was like... aww... if only Deloria was here. :P

If I had have gone, I wouldn't have taken half as many photos... I suck at doing the whole photo thing. Wish I could go to some of those places, would be great!

Actually, I don't like taking photos either. :P  My sister took the vast majority of them.

I didn't even bring our camera to NY. :P Which is fine, because we did more work on TSL than sightseeing. XD

I'd rather just experience it, taking photos is just annoying. But yeah definitely a sister/girl type thing to do. :P

Heh, yep.  There was a lot of: "WTF you didn't focus!", "Why didn't you tell me my hair was doing this??", "Don't take a picture with THAT stuff in it, hold the camera like this!", "Oh, I was blinking. Take it again", etc. ::) :dead: :P

Embassies in Bruges? I doubt it, most of them are in Brussels, maybe a few in Antwerp, but apart from those two cities, I don't think so.

I probably have, but in a previous life, aka school.

I probably wouldn't have taken that many photos either. Visual stuff is just not my thing.

Oh ok.  I thought maybe you'd be familiar with the area, since it was around the city's center, more or less.

Right, where are those relatives of yours in Belgium located? You don't have to give me their street name or anything, city will be sufficient. Furthermore, why didn't you come and visit me while you were around? Belgium isn't that big you know. :P

Oh, actually my relatives live in Germany.  We just drove to Belgium for the day.  We didn't realize that the day we went was Belgium's National Holiday (July 21st I think?), so the drive took 5 or 6 hours from all the traffic.  I think normally it's supposed to just be 3.5 hours.

But yeah, I didn't really get a chance to visit anyone other than relatives.  ::) Maybe next time.
