Mmm. I've never had a specific situation like that happen. However, I do know that trying to promote the idea of forum members treating each other with some respect and civility is a completely thankless job. I'm not sure there really is anything to do, except either grit your teeth and keep posting the way you feel you should, give in to posting the way everyone else does, or give up altogether.

Personally, I'd go to a global moderator or the forum administrator if necessary.

If there are forum rules against offensive content (which is usually the case) then a user who signs up with an offensive nickname violates the rules.  If no such rule exists, then the fact alone that the username is offending people is enough for that user to be repremanded, if not banned.

I think the "any name can be seen as offensive" is a pathetic arguement.  If there are people complaining then there is a problem.

I'm not sure if you are a moderator there or not, but if so, I would actually ban that user, notify some higher mod that you've done this and also explain why you couldn't let it continue.  Also, don't forget to e-mail that user and explain why they can no longer use that nickname.  Screw the other moderators, if the nickname offends people OR if it offends you, then do what you need to.

seriously though, I know what its feel like to feel in ackward positions, my suggestion is make out your point clear and with strenght enough to get it though, Im not saying "go b****" but sometimes there are things you just cant go round and you just can't put in nice words, and sadly sometimes these things need to be said.

I would vote for what Neil said myself, personally Neil and I even though we dont agree we tend to work amazingly because we do ask each other and each other opinions do matter between us, but this sadly doesnt quite happens in other teams... sometimes boss is nothing else but a boss, and heads of department nothing more than pooh heads, this is in case you feel you have no support whatsoever to your concern, my honest suggestion is before you take any action you speak -again- quite clear, strong and very solid like give out a time to it, whatever the answer may be take a convenient call to it, but on this matter I dont suggest you take it to a whole, I suggest you take it for yourself, what you think its better for you, if you are a mod on a place and you are not being paid and that's the enviroment you work into, I seriously dare you to ask to yourself wether it is worthy or not in the end.

It's alright you did try to work for a good cause, if you thought it may be offending to others its because you know the frequents there and that seemed like a thing to work for then, sad they didnt support you and that they crumbled that way, that shows you that good friends and good team players are the ones that are there with you when you need them the most, at least if its just to listen or to help you agree to negotiate to find a common ground.

And hey dont be sad!, that means you are available for better places, things got ackward there but it doesnt mean they would for you everywhere, in fact you've been also around here for around a year ... so who knows? ...

Welp, I actually quit (and pissed off one of the two remaining admins in the process =/ by calling her work a smut-hole)...  I feel a bit better for it, but bad that I left on such a bitter note.

I still got my friends from there though, so I'm glad about that  And I've got my friends here, so thanks all of you
