THE BAD: Just got my supervision report for this term's essay work. It had words like "satisfactory" and "adequate" in it which, of course, makes me feel horribly unsatisfactory and inadequate :( and, in turn, makes me question why I'm here at all, if all I can get is "satisfactory" reports.

:( ooh... I know how that feels :-/ :( Bear in mind: the level at which you're working ("satisfactory" work in undergrad at Cambridge is different from "satisfactory" undergrad work at some podunk state school*... yes, I just used the "word" "podunk"... stop staring at me!), other forms of assessment for instance the assessment of the individual essays, and your supervisor's reputation (is he known as a particularly tough grader, fair grader? students are the place to look for this sort of thing; other professors, etc. are not likely to share their real opinion with a student they don't know personally if for no other reason than professionalism).

*erm... your mileage will vary: in the US there's basically a hierarchy to schools: community colleges (1-2 yr. institutions), state schools (such as Georgia State University, etc.), and more specialized schools--i.e. a college that is actually known for something (engineering schools, liberal arts colleges, etc.) I would imagine Cambridge would be in the upper end of that third tier.
