The BAD: I got three hours of sleep. I was up for the rest of the night having really really horrible and weird hallucinations thanks to an interaction between codeine, anti-histamines, SNRIs and my usual cocktail of hormones.
Never again.

The BAD: ...but... redoing all of the models for the second core with slightly higher jet and interface temperatures... DOES NOT INTEREST ME AT ALL >:( :(

The BAD: feeling all sleep-deprived and groggy and whatnot... I still got 5 hours of sleep...

The GOOD: if I'm lazy and don't redo the models with those higher temperatures, I have 2 out of 3 cores done for the "cursed" G333 paper. :D :-X

The GOOD: thinking about my work makes me feel happy and competent-ish
The BAD: thinking about... other things... makes me feel conflicted and awful... :(  :-\

The BAD: feeling pretty consistently awful lately despite work's going so well :(

THE GOOD: Our board game we made in class is finally done and looks good! With our members reunited, we had a fun time.

THE BAD: I showed a friend of mine The Silver Lining today as well... we got maybe fifteen minutes into the game (it was after Graham got his hat and stuff on and I was heading towards the garden to talk to Titania and Oberon) when he said:"I'm not really an Adventure gamer." and left to go play games on Steam.

*sigh* Atleast Cassie was a little more enthusiastic about it.

Deloria

Ooh, what kind of board game? :)

I don't think people who haven't played the earlier games can really understand; it's a work of fan fiction that doesn't make sense when taken out of context. It caters specifically to KQ fans by bringing in characters we've met and loved in past gaming experiences. People who haven't had those won't be touched in the same way.

The GOOD: I have a study schedule!
The GOOD: It doesn't seem overwhelming! XD
The BAD: I should probably be panicking more. :P
The GOOD?: 28 days before my written exams are over! 54 days until my oral exams are over! THEN NINE MONTHS OFF TO COMMIT GENOCIDE (spiders), TRAVEL THE WORLD AND DO MORALLY REPREHENSIBLE THINGS! :D
The BAD: K dramas are as addictive as they are insipid. XD I'm not sure I like myself right now. :P

What kind? Well, the goal is: You (and whomever else is playing with you) have been captured onto an alien ship, and thanks to a very convenient temporary power outage from passing by a solar flare, have broken out of the Brig and try to make your escape. Unfortunately, this temporary power outage both helps and hinders you. Why? Because, not only have you gotten out, but also all the robots and various experiments are running around rampant in the ship!

Your goal is to reach the Bridge, where the Captain Great Cthulhu awaits you and when you defeat him, you need to reach the escape pod.

This game involves a LOT of dice (twenty sided and six sided), and a LOT of lucky rolls along with them. I felt so sorry for Dennis (one of our teammates), because he was doing so well in the beginning... and then he fought the Head of Security, got him down to 5 health and then Albert stepped in and not only killed the boss, but stole the item he dropped too because he got a higher roll!

Then, things just went south for him, as he was getting event space after event space and had to keep fighting and fighting and getting beat up, and when he finally reached the Medical Bay it got worse. Why? Because like everything else, it depends on your roll. Roll a 5 or lower, you hurt yourself for 5 damage (and he had 6 health and a maximum of 20). Roll between 6 and 18, you heal yourself completely. Roll between 19 and 20, you heal yourself completely AND increase your maximum health by 50%. Dennis got, like, 4 on his die and hurt himself for 5 damage. Now, he has 1 HP left and is considering just giving up. He goes outside the Medical Bay, lands on an event space... and the Event Card that says "A Security Turret spots you on its radar and ZAPs you! You lose 1 HP!" and died instantly!

"Oh come on! That's like coming out of the hospital and getting run over by the ambulance!"

I was tempted to make a Space Quet reference, since his bad luck reminded me of all the nasty ways Roger could die.

In contrast to me, who was doing GREAT up until the very end: I got the BFG amongst other weapons I don't remember, had barely lost any HP at all, managed to kill the Weapons Master (the one boss guarding the Armory) IN ONE HIT by getting a roll of 20, AND I was the one who killed Cthulhu IIRC... and then I ended up tripping over my own clumsy feet (as I said) by getting a roll of 6 (three six sided dice all of them rolled on 2) when I need 9 to reach the escape pod. In fact, the only one who made it was Albert, the one who as Dennis quoted was "The one who rode on everyone's coat tails." although, Albert didn't agree with that statement.

All in all a very fun game, but very much based on luck.

As for TSL, that's the thing. I TRIED to explain the backstory to him (about Graham, his family, and trying to summarize each game), including the significance of the Black Cloaks... but he just didn't care about any of that.

I told him to give it a chance since it has a great story and great characters (thanks to, of course Katie and Cezar I assume), but he told me, "If I want that, I'll read Isaac Asimov, Terry Pratchett enc..."

People who haven't played the earlier games? Um... what about me? I haven't picked up ANY of the KQ games, and have only knowledge of them through various Let's Plays (Paw, Dilandau3000, hercrabbiness enc), Paw's Retrospective (how I found out in the first place what KQ is), TV Tropes, the King's Quest Omnipedia and this site. The only games I've ever picked up are the AGD remakes of 1, 2 and 3 (but after seeing a couple Ways To Die videos on IA's version of 3, I will probably never pick up that. I think it's the graphics and voice acting that get to me, especially since I was introduced to AGDI' version first.)

I haven't played ANY of the official games, and yet I love The Silver Lining regardless! I didn't even know what King's Quest really was (aside from "It's an old brutal game from Sierra!" whispered about on TV Tropes) up until last year.

Yet, you guys accepted me here regardless.

Deloria

Whether you've played them yourself or not is irrelevant - you've experienced them through Let's Plays. You grew with the characters because you experienced their struggles through watching them and projecting onto them; it's like growing attached to characters in a movie because you've seen them grow and develop and they've helped you grow and develop through that by making you consider things you hadn't or wouldn't have.

I just find it's generally not enough to only be *told* the backstory because the same level of attachment isn't there (after all, how could it be? When you watch or play a game you spend hours and hours with the character, whereas it's only a few minutes if you're just told the story or read the wiki article).

Okay then, explain why my other friend Cassie was liking it a lot more?

I did send her some videos in an Email, but she didn't get a chance to watch them, since she doesn't have much time at her computer. I sent her another Email before videos one, which was me continuing on what I'd told her before about the series while I was with her in the same class. She didn't get a chance to read that either for the same reasons, and when we FINALLY got to episode 1, I just recapped and read aloud all that I'd wrote anyway from Quest For The Crown to Mask of Eternity (what I knew of each game at the time) and I even mentioned the AGD remakes, and told her specifically "The AGD Remakes are seperate timelines, and hadrack and The Father aren't the same."

She's never seen anything King's Quest related, aside from what I've shown her, and she liked it anyway.

Jafar

It's not really something you can boil down to a science. :P
Cassie just might've been more open to checking it out for whatever reason. In any case though, I think Deli has a point. TSL is a very referential game, and you really have to know the previous games to really get everything.
And it's easier to form a connection with something when you're experiencing it, rather than just hearing about it.

TSL is a very, very pretty game; the music and the graphics are gorgeous and that's enough to draw a lot of people in at first glance, especially if they're more visually oriented. Your other friend might have just been a bit bored or frustrated with all the references he didn't get, especially if he's used to Discworld novels, where one can jump in anywhere in the series and still get pretty much all the references.

And the game you designed sounds really fun. :) I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to comment earlier.

That's true. Up until very, VERY recently (like say, a month or so ago) I wouldn't have gotten most of the Gabriel Knight references in TSL and TH&GS if I hadn't watched Dilandau's LPs of Gabriel Knight 1 and 2 (and recently 3) before playing again. Because I now got the joke, I got a big laugh out of Graham saying "What can you tell me about... Voodoo?" to Black Widow with the "Shadows (hunters)" question.

Graham can surprisingly imitate Tim Curry' Gabe quite well.

Ah, Discworld. I've been hoping to get into that series for awhile (alongside Doctor Who), but I wouldn't even know where to begin!

THE GRRR: Microsoft Access, why oh why do you hate me so?

THE HORRIBLE: The 21 year-old barista from Oregon that went missing last week was found dead on Satrurday. I'm sick about it and I'm losing faith in humanity more and more every day.

Negative. The solution is--what else?--COFFEE!  :drunk: I myself recommend a triple shot Snickers mocha with no whip, though I have also been known to settle for a triple white chocolate hazelnut mocha as well (though less likely).
