Not really, it's more like a dairy product.

When we had a French exchange living with us a few years ago, we served what's called "farmer's cheese", and our exchange student laughed and told us that it was, in fact, not cheese, and that the American idea of what is cheese is wrong. I agree with him.

I always feel like such a stupid American...we were required to take only 2 years of a foreign language in high school and that was it.  I took Spanish, but I enjoyed it so much that I took it all four years of high school.  Load of good it did me, too--I've forgotten most of it.
