Heh... the save system I remember was solely disk-based.  Luckily... and I don't know if it was a stock feature or if my brother/parents forked out extra money for it, but our 1000 had two 5 1/4 drives, so it was as simple as having a dedicated 'SAVE' disc for us.  They also bumped up the RAM in in... I think it had a whopping 64 mb or so.

I fell into the moat a lot of times.  :D
I had a 3 1/2 drive and tried to load QFG2 on it. Not a good idea. It took 20 minutes to get my character from the inn to outside... not because of the slowdown, but 'cause the computer kept asking me to swap disk back and forth. It gets far worse if you try to go into the alleys...

My favorite KQ game.... wow. Tough. I would say in spirit, VI.  But, from the technical standpoint of what makes a great game.... Kings quest III: To heir is human.  That was back before I used hintbooks, and possibly the first kq game I ever played. I might have played kq1 once before that, but I remember we had kq3 on our IBM pc. I didn't know who I was or what.  The Manannan fear factor too.  I just remember getting off the pirate ship and saying, Whoa, I'm in another land! Then to find out daventry! I knew enough of kq1 to know about daventry, but like i said, I played kq1 in passing, maybe watching others play it. I really got INTO 3.  I was most excited to get KQ5 after seeing the graphics.  So yes, in conclusion: Best in spirit: KQ6. Best Technically: KQ3 Best innovation: KQ5. And I definetely had to buy a hint book eventually to beat kq3 (I still have the old hintbook).
