Specs: MacBook Pro bootcamping Windows XP SP2, I think. I was running the earliest version of KQV (no spoken word, just text). My version is not from the Vivendi Collection. I was having no problem saving/loading my game when all of a sudden I got the message

QuoteThis directory/disk can hold no more saved games. You must replace one of your saved games or use Change Directory to save on a different directory/disk.

I have tried, but the game does not let me change directories.

I am aware there are some fixes online, but none seem to work for me.

What happens when you try to change directories?

I'm going to bump this over to the Off-Topic thread as I need to keep everything in this thread related to just technical issues for TSL.

It says that the new directory is not valid.

EDIT: I fixed it. I was running it in DOSBox, and I forgot that when I typed

Quotemount c c:\kq5\kq5

the game no longer viewed my C: drive as the C: drive - C:\kq5\kq5 became the new C: drive. So I just created a C:\kq5\kq5\saves folder, which DOSBox simply views as C:\saves.

Hmmm, did that make any sense?

I've made the same mistake in Dosbox more than a few times, I always forget that part for savegame folders.

That's actually what I was going to suggest checking. XD
Good to know you fixed it.

its not that stressed in the disk version, where it just has it typed out as "...it's a poisonous snake"...

Cedric's accent doesn't show up in the text, unfortunately.
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

Well, I got past the :snake:, but I have to say, the solution to the puzzle was actually very lame.

You are able to move the snake because you find a tambourine. That's fine, but finding the tambourine has virtually no connection to anything you've been doing up to that point in the game (fighting the witch, going into town, interacting with animals, crossing the desert, etc.). It's just a triggered event that happens after you do everything else in Serenia.

Mushka's caravan could've moved at any point, revealing the tambourine. You don't actually do anything that causes the caravan to leave - it just leaves once you've done everything. The solution to the puzzle is not progressive, because it does not build. Effectively, once you've done enough stuff in Serenia, you get a thinly disguised key (the tambourine) to open the door (POIsonous snake).

I hope that this is understandable.

Ya it's basically just a chapter divider, a bit random for sure.

This is a known issue with KQ5. Most SCI DOS games can be started by just invoking the main executable with no problems. KQ5 is quirky. You must specify the exact path to the RESOURCE.CFG as DOSBox sees it. If mounting the game's folder as C:, the easiest solution is to start the game form the dosbox.conf with "SIERRA C:\RESOURCE.CFG". This is all automated with my new installers.

Yeah, I fixed it, thanks.

It just seemed frustratingly unrelated to everything I was doing up to that point.
