Ugh. If you asked me to name bands I can't stand, Muse would be pretty high up there. XD

I mean no offense to anyone who likes them, and I understand it's a good bit of people with great taste in music. I'm the only one of my friends who doesn't, but there's something about their sound that is just....Gah. XD I just find it incredibly boring and it seems to drone on and on. It's like Animal Crossing; everyone else seems to love it, but I just can't stand it. XD

I would have to agree, with respect to those who like them. If I had to define what Muse sounds like to me, "Rock Opera" are the first words that would come to mind. They are a band that can create interesting phrases, but the overabundance of effects and digital work is unimpressive. Of course, I grew up in a simpler time of music. Maybe it's just not for me.  :-\

probably.

but might I ask... have you heard any of their old stuff?  they are a lot different back then.  check out muscle museum, falling down, unintended, bliss, feeling good (micheal buble cover)  I can see how that wouldn't be your thing.  their music is really... big.  not very simple.  I love it though.

so mew and muse down.... (well actually no one else really commented on mew) anyone up for some coheed and cambria?

Hey! I commented on Mew! As for C&C, I really like "Welcome Home", but that's the only song I know by them.

oh thats right.  you did.

yeah.  welcome home is the only popular one thanks to guitar hero.

I prefer their older stuff.

check this out:

and this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NItTBfA_BM
and then if you want a really epic song from the next album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gcik1ZMTDv8

all their stuff connects to a story the lead singer is writing and it connects to his series of comic books.

I prefer the musical style of their first 2 albums, but the newer stuff (good appolo vol 1 and 2) is good.  really hate their new album TBH though.

I'd agree with doon, Welcome Home is a good song. I liked them back when they did A Favor House Atlantic, but that song didn't really establish them as a band. They were known for the heavier songs, not the pop/emo scene.

I tried to listen to Mew, but once again, not really my cup of tea. If one can appreciate that music, I can respect that, but it's not for everyone.  :-\

I also listened to Muse's Time Is Running Out, and thought that that was a good song, but I was hoping that the band wasn't going to go too far into that "techno rock" phase. But they did. I listened to Knights of Cydonia, Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, and even Uprising (which has a guitar lick that is reminiscent of Blondie's Call Me). I tried to like them; it was pretty much at that point I decided that it must be an acquired taste of music. If there's people that like Muse, all the more power to them. I just feel like I'm missing out on something.

don't mistake one song for the whole emo thing.

you have to listen to their albums and other stuff.  check 2113.  that is on the same album with favor house atlantic.   Also, there really is no way to call them emo if you study the lyrics/story.  thhey are known for their hevier songs now, but that is not the best of them by any means.  their first 2 albums were far better in terms of progressive rock with some pop elements.  but honestly their old sound was so unique and varied that is is hard to even classify them that much.

same with mew really.  in fact that might be why they are my 2 favorite bands.  unclassifiable, brilliant music.  it's so original.  you can try to categorize it but why waste time?  if you listen to their albums you can really appreciate their varied sounds....

with muse you need to hear their albums too.  uprising is by far the worst song on the new album IMO.  supermassive is the worst of black holes and revelations.  honestly, I think origin of symmetry is the best of fmuse, followed by black holes and revelations.  I love origin all the way through, black holes and revelations is great except supermassive black hole.  but when you listen as an album it actually fits in ok without sucking too much.

so basically, all 3 bands we are discussing here require deeper listening before really deciding what you think of them.  that is why they aren't mainstream (in the case of mew/coheed.  muse is mainstream and that is WHY they are so under appreciated, similar to coldplay in that way.)

Supermassive Black Hole is relatively fun. XD

Coldplay, on the other hand...My mom had the CD X and Y, I think and I was forced to listen to it. I genuinely can't tell the difference between their songs. :S

That hurts...I love that CD!
me too!

although my favorite from coldplay is either parachutes or viva la vida.

Supermassive black hole is alright.  It is a pretty fun song.  it really isn't muse though.  as I said though, it works on the album.  though IMO it is still the worst track.

Origin of symmetry will never be topped.  NEVER.

just like Mew And the glass handed kites, or coheed and SSTB.

I've never judged a band prematurely. I always listen to everything their album has to offer. I like Coheed and Cambria, and agree that they can't be classified. I said they were known for their heavier scene, and not their pop songs. To classify a band nowadays is a waste of time. Classifying the songs are what matter to people.

I tried to listen to Mew, but it has more to do with the singer's voice, not so much their style. Musically, their not bad. But every band has their quirks, and Mew isn't an exception.

Also, with Muse, I have tried on numerous accounts to listen to their old, as well as new stuff. I can't stand them. I respect them as musicians, not to mention as a band who has become widely popular within a relatively small frame of time. I just can't bring myself to listen to their music seriously. I have an innate reaction to change the radio station every time they come one. Yesterday, they were on all of my presets simultaneously, I just shut off my radio altogether. I don't mean to offend those who like Muse (or to offend Muse themselves), I'm just indifferent when it comes to contemporary music. If it doesn't impress me, I don't listen to it. Once again, no offense intended.

The singer of mew, and coheed come to think of it, turns a lot of people off.

Mew really is unclassifiable as well... the music really is amazing and personally I love the voice.  but I can understand if you didn't like it.  it is pretty strange.

I see what you mean.  yeah it's true.  because welcome home, ten speed, and whatever shiz from the new album is all that most people know.  and that would be their hevier, more "emo" seeming stuff.

Hmm... I guess muse isn't for everyone either.  I have been listening to them (though not a lot) since black holes and revelations came out.  I just recently (well in the last year or 2 I mean) came to appreciate the true greatness of the music.  I love it.  Because of this, I can't really understand not liking them, but to each his own I guess.

yeah, they are awesome too.

prog is great.  it's just kinda funny how my preference lines up perfectly with the stereotypes...

although most prog fans aren't as into coheed as me.  their old stuff especially had a lot of prog in it.

oh and yes is great too.  haven't listened to them in a long time.

Now Rush is a good band. That's something we can both agree on. It's the odd time signatures that really intrigue me. Most bands can't pull that off. Although, I've heard Incubus play in odd time signatures before. Dream Theater is also know for their time signatures as well.

Neil Peart's my hero!  :D

From what I have heard of dream theater (not much)  I love some of their stuff.  the speed metal sound isn't for me.  their stuff that isn't uber fast drums or whatever is epic though and I love the singer's voice.
Rush really is a great band.  I love the whole power trio thing.  I know you said you don't like muse but they do a pretty great job as a power trio too.  it requires a lot more than usual from the bass and drums to have a good power trio.
odd time signatures.... radiohead anyone?

I never really listened to Radiohead. I listened to their song, Creep, and never really went back. They sound like they're good, but at the time that they were releasing singles, I never caught on to that style of music.

haha... that's what a lot of people say.  that was their only song that got popular
.  in fact it was one of their only radio singles I think, or at least the only popular one....
can you believe this is the same band?
