Arkillian, MOE, isn't a shooter game (many enemies are even immune to the bows). Think more Quest for Glory with Lara Croft mixed (do you like Lara Croft?). Shooting is very limited. The fighting is more hack and slash, point and click sword fighting. It's also primarily third person, with option of switching to first person.
I don't know if you can get the demos to work (with the fan patch). They cover the first two worlds, and give a reasonable idea of the gameplay and puzzle variety. It has many puzzles.
Most people seem to have an idea what they think MOE is based on pictures and hearsay, but don't seem to have any idea what it actually has! It's not perfect and definitely has combat, but the game is definitely more than that.
As far as combat is concerned it's very slow, and very easy. It's actually kinda boring. Just click on an enemy 1-3 times with your sword/axe/mace/etc until they die. It's slower pace than even Zelda OOT (which the game has more in common with in some ways)! It's simplified even over QFG (there is no real dodging/shield work). The game was clearly designed for adventure gamers that lack skill needed for true 'action games'. Thr combat is suitable amateurs and beginners, even on hard (on easy combat is practically ignorable, as enemies do almost no damage, and die in one hit).
