This begs the devil's advocate question: Is faking a shutdown to garner PR any better than exploiting an actual C&D for the same purpose?   ;)

snabbott

I wouldn't say the team exploited the C&D - they needed to wait until things were officially straightened out with Activision before making the announcement. It did end up having the same effect, though.

The C&Ds were real, both times, nor would I call how we handled them "exploiting," but I'll accept that may be a matter of opinion and depend on where you're standing. So, yes,  would say a fake shutdown is worse.

the team obeyed the C&D and then the save TSL team worked to lift the C&D. and help negotiate with activision, then the team was allowed to continue.  at least that's what I get from it.  They were given the green light long before it was announced.  ahh, I remember those days, knowing something no one outside the team knew.  The suffer smiley was so fun.

sorry for such a nonsensical post.

then eventually oberonqa and waltz moved onto the team and left me stranded.  lol.

The delay before making the announcement after the second C&D was because, while they had a verbal agreement with Activision (or something - I don't know the details), the contract needed to be worked out and finalized. It was SO hard knowing what was going on and not saying anything!

I didn't know exactly what was going on, but what I knew is that we had basically been given the green light, but some stuff still needed to be done.

that was so fun, but so difficult.

If you're talking about using real C&Ds to attract attention to the game and the cause, then I don't think that's bad at all. Now, if the C&Ds were faked, it would be a different story, but they weren't.

So, the site appears to be back up.  Space Quests 4 - 6 are on there; just looking to see what else.  But looks pretty good!

So their nice little login overlay? Yeah...doesn't work in Chrome.

It seemed to work okay for me in Chrome.  The site is a bit juddery with server updates, but everything seems to be there!

Plus Cannon Fodder was there.  YEAH.

It's happening on the Support page too, with the different support sections. Hmm...a Javascript issue, maybe? Assuming they wrote those with Javascript of course...at any rate, I'm submitting a support request through Safari. We'll see what's wrong.

I'm using Chrome and all seems to be OK. (Side Note:  <3 <3 <3 <3 Chrome! <3 <3 <3 <3)

Well, I did it. Bought the GK series. Will be buying more soon.

I found it odd that I was hesitant to hit the purchase button for a game that costs $6... Yet, I wouldn't even think twice spending $3 on a gourmet coffee at Starbucks. Weird how my mind works. These games are cheap. Stupid cheap.

Dunno but I know Filefront did a similar thing last year around April fools day. First, they announced that they would quit and "suddenly" they were saved. My guess is that they faked it to achieve a dramatic effect, nothing more . . .
It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. From the railway station came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance ...

I remember that. I bet if GOG had done this on April Fool's it would have been received better.

Just took a peek on GOG, and it looks like they have Planescape: Torment now. It's a very rare game that wasn't easy to install on any modern machine, and now both of those inconveniences have perished by the might of GOG. Enjoy everybody!  :P

I don't think it would. Many of the Filefront userbase still believe that it was a badly performed April's fools joke, despite the persistence of staffmembers telling them that 'it was most certainly NOT an April's fools joke' . . .
