Now now... Let's not let this thread get too far off course. I can see this derailing fast.

Look around you...almost any piece of consumer electronics shows signs of Apple's influence.

Sorry DD, I wanted to get this in here. No more off-topic banter from me.  :P

Fine. I'll allow that. But no more, please. I'd like this to stay on Gog. If you'd like to discuss apple's influence on the rest of the world, you're more than welcome to create a thread to do so.

It'd be a pretty short thread. It's insignificant, and it goes without saying. I'd rather just stick to the topic of discussion, and if I should stray from the topic, I'll be happy to come back to it. I just missed the past few posts, and was inclined to comment on it, but not discuss in full detail. Clearly, I was just joking about Apple and Microsoft, nothing sincere.

So, it looks like GOG is just getting a face-lift, it seems. I am wary though. Why would they release a letter to apologize to the community for the inconvenience, if the "inconvenience" would actually lead to convenience? Peculiar indeed.  :-\

Because it gets people talking.  I guarantee there's a bunch more people that know about GOG and what they do now than there were a week ago just because of this.

Me, for example. I'm definitely going there to buy my next old games, provided that it still exists.

So publicity is the only reason? I would have imagined there was a meaning behind what they were saying. Anyway, it's nice to know they're coming back.

Well the truth is we don't know for sure what's happening. We're all assuming it's some kind of PR stunt, but we won't have much more information until Wednesday, when they are supposed to be announcing what's going on.

You can also download MoE from them, provided that they still offer it when/if they relaunch. I certainly plan to.

Also, if you buy KQ6 from them, it includes the files for the Windows version, which someone was able to get working.

How does one get the Windows files working on KQ6?

Technically the KQ6 in the 2006 collection also has the files to the windows version (minus the intro videos).

You can get it working through VDM Sound as I understand it. But it takes some work.

Honestly, I don't know. I read about people getting it to work on the GoG forums, but hadn't tried it or committed it to memory. I did, however, leave that forum topic open in a tab for when I had time to try it. And then when GoG went away, so did the topic. :P

Well basically, for VDMsound methoid, you need to install VDM sound.

Then I think you install windows version regular way. Then you right click on KQ6 icon, and choose, "open with VDMsound".

More information here;
http://www.sierrahelp.com/Games/KingsQuest/KQ6AndXP.html

It probably will only work on 32 bit windows, and not 64 bit versions.

Does it? The installer mentioned in the link you posted (http://www.sierrahelp.com/Games/KingsQuest/KQ6AndXP.html) is not present either on the CDs or in the game's installation folder. I also attempted to follow the instructions from that page that did not deal with the installer and when I ran the final batch file, VDMS loaded and executed the sciwv.exe sierra.ini command and then sat and did nothing. Are we sure that the 2006 collection actually does contain the Windows files? I don't have an original copy of either the DOS or Windows version, so I can't check.

Right there is no windows installer on the 2006 version. But all the windows files are there apparently (other than the intro video). So it takes a bit more work to get it working, but it can be done.

The link I gave you to gog explained how to get around the lack of windows installer (while accessing windows graphics) using VDM sound (and a few extra tweaks). Unfortunately that link is down...

Okay, apparently that's the GOG forum topic I mentioned earlier. I didn't know that it would also work with the 2006 collection.

I found this article to be quite interesting. It's also closely related to how I feel about this PR work. The only thing that others might find interesting is that it seems like Baldur's Gate (a great series btw) might be making its way to GOG.

For one thing, I agree with the author: if this was a PR stunt, it was in pretty bad taste.
Secondly, I'm glad that if those are glimpses of the new site, the bookshelf is still there. That was pretty cool.
Thirdly, I loled when I saw the article tagged with "SERIOUSLY WTF" XD
