So I've been intrigued with Let's Plays lately, and decided to start making some myself. If I take to it, I'll probably end up tackling ambitious projects like Half-Life, System Shock and others, but for now, I thought I should start with something relatively small and simple to get my feet wet and see if I'm up for it. Ergo, I did KQI.

I'm sharing this here because I assume some may want to see it (even though there are others on YouTube), but I'm also asking for feedback. I know there are some things to be tweaked:

1. I need to either speak louder or get the microphone closer (I don't have a headset and am using an old desk microphone propped up by stacks of books. Not the best setup, but it's all I can do for now.).
2. The mouse cursor is hovering mockingly in the middle of the screen for parts 1 and 2 (I discovered how to fix this).

Any pointers are welcome. Parts 1 and 2 are available now (links below). Thanks in advance! :)

So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

Oh, nice! I'll take a look in a minute.

"I'm not one for big introductions." Off to a great start.

Oh, and your mic sounds fine.

Out of curiosity, why are you playing the SCI version?

I just finished watching both parts.  Great job so far.  I'm glad you took time out to show the death messages.  I laughed my ash off at the dragon death.   ;D

I wish you spoke more during the introduction.  You could've made a joke about the, "I chose you to volunteer," line.  I hope you do get the audio fixed.

Anyway, great job so far.  Keep it up.  ^_^
I have my cake and eat it too, until it's gone.  Then I can't do either.

Aww!  You have the Sword of Hugging +3!  All of your attacks deal affectionate damage!

It's the only one he has.

Lol. I had a longer, sort-of-scripted-but-not-really intro and after a few takes of screwing it up, I realized that it was long-winded, pointless and that no one would really care about what I was saying, so I cut it and went with a simple introduction.

Thanks. As far as sound quality, it really is a decent little thing for having been free with a computer we got many years ago. It just needs to be a little closer for volume (unless you listen with headphones).

Yup. I have the 2006 King's Quest Collection, which only contains the SCI version.

^_^ I love that one. Easily one of my favorite King's Quest deaths. I plan to show more as I continue.

I wrestled with that for a bit before recording. I knew there were some jokes to be had, but at the same time, I didn't want to ruin the atmosphere. Then again, I suppose atmosphere is harder to get into when watching a video as opposed to playing the game itself. And I did end up making a joke anyway.

Thanks. For now, I may just stack more books so the mic is right next to my face. Hopefully I can invest in a headset when I actually have a paying job.

I have the 2006 King's Quest Collection, which only contains the SCI version.

I found the AGI version online somewhere. Seeing as you can't buy it anymore, it's relatively harmless to acquire it. I could find a link if you're interested.

I also know of a place where I can acquire it. However, it can be bought through Amazon as part of the King's Quest Collector's Edition, so I wouldn't feel right about acquiring it through other means. Thanks, though.

Yup. Not cheap unless you buy used, but still there. I'm trying to not spend money at the moment, though; otherwise I would have already snagged one.

Okay, part three is available here. A link has also been added to the first post. Part 4 is uploading now.
I borrowed a headset from my church this time, so the volume should be much better.
Also, I suck at timing. :P I'm attempting to record each segment within YouTube's 15-minute time limit, but I keep forgetting to either check my watch or start it, which is why these four segments are actually two recording sessions split. Sorry about that.

Part 4 is now available here.

FYI - This week's parts will be late. I recorded them tonight as planned, then CamStudio decided that it wasn't going to let me save them no matter what I tried, and since I haven't been keeping backup saves in the game like I should have been, I'm going to have to replay the game from the beginning to get back to where I was so I can re-record this week's parts. :P
Anyway, I should get another chance to record Wednesday night, so look for parts 5 and 6 some time Thursday afternoon. Apologies for the delay!

(Posted on: October 25, 2010, 12:44:34 AM)

Part 5 is up now and 6 is on the way. I'm still monkeying with the audio...the music is overpowering my voice, but that's because I tend to not speak very loud when I feel like I'm talking to myself. Trying to find a happy medium between the music and my voice isn't easy. I'm working on it, though.

Making Let's Play videos is a lot harder than I thought it would be, particularly because you have to split parts every 15 minutes, otherwise they won't fit on YouTube. It's hard to only play 15 minutes of King's Quest at a time. :(

Anyway, enjoy, and sorry again for the delay.

The new collections from gog.com only have SCI kq1. Any I was a bit miffed that even though they showed the windows versions of KQ6&7, they didn't REALLY solve the problem with it running on 64 bit vista... they just let you play the DOS version in Dosbox. Grr... I finally installed win 3.1 in Dosbox, installed the video and audio drivers and got KQ6 and 7 to run beautifully :)

ScummVM supports the Windows version. Check out this topic.

If I couldn't have gotten it to run in win 3.1 that's the option I would have chosen. But then KQ7 doesn' t run in ScummVM right?

Not yet, no.
Windows 3.1 is all well and good, but it's more of a hassle to play it that way then in ScummVM. But whatever floats your boat.

The final two parts are live! Click here to check out 7 and click here for 8.

I'm hoping to start on KQ2 next week. I haven't decided yet if I'll make a new thread for it or keep using this one, though since I can't edit the thread title, I'll probably make a new one.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for better screen capturing software than CamStudio, please let me know. I liked it at first, but last night it kept crashing on me; I lost about 30 minutes of work twice due to crashes. So, suggestions for better software are more than welcome. The one requirement, however, other than it having decent video quality, is that it has to be free; I can't afford to buy anything.

Thanks again for the feedback, and keep your eyes open for KQ2! :)

Ah... but which version of KQ2? The AGD remake or the original or both? The remake is a lot better methinks.

Brian Linton

The original first. I plan to do the remakes, just not yet.
