I want you to think of an item used in an adventure game and list at least one game where it helped and how. I'll start.

Rope: On monkey island you need rope to get down into the gorge.

Delling

a blade of some kind

KQ1: dagger
KQ2: sword
KQ3: knife
KQ4: here they get creative... it's an axe
KQ5: here they break tradition all together: no blade
KQ6: one more for old time's sake... Celeste's dagger
KQ7: and again no blade

Hey!  What about the sword Alex uses to whack the top of Alhazred's head?

I considered that, but I don't think it ever actually goes into his inventory. I could have included things that have "blades" but that we wouldn't really consider a bladed weapon (shovels for instance) in which case KQ7 had a blade it was just a shovel. :P

Lol! You make it sound rather like a Tom and Jerry-style conflict! ;D

A stick!

Um...okay, granted I can't remember a list off the top of my head, but there's always a stick. The only one I can think of right now is in KQ5 that you throw at the dog.

And KQ7 in the desert!

It kind of was. Alexander wasn't exactly swordfighting there. :P You'd think if Alhazred were any good with a sword, he'd have dispatched him quickly and easily. There was a bit of cat and mouse to that fight (and it's why Alhazred lost). :P

The sword in KQ6 may not have gone into the inventory, but the scythe did.  So that's two blades in Alexander's inventory.  Roberta also did Black Cauldron, which has a dagger in it too.  She liked her knives I guess.

How about rocks in Space Quest?  You use a rock in SQ1.  You sling a rock in SQ2, and you have a glowing gem, which is also just a rock.  You still have the glowing gem in SQ3.  I think 4 and 5 are rock free, but in SQ6, they're back to their roots, having you throw gall stones at nanites.

Great minds! :D
And theirs too!
Oh snap. :P

Sorry, I couldn't resist! Ya'll are brilliant. :)

Anyways, I'm gonna go with "cup" for my item since Alexander uses one in both KQ3 and KQ6 (different kinds of cups, but cups nonetheless!)

Keys/Keycards: Pretty much any adventure game.

Where would an adventure be without blocked paths that you couldn't explore until you passed a certain point in the game and could unlock it.

Enchantermon

As Yahtzee said about System Shock 2 and Bioshock: "Whenever you get a deceptively simple objective like 'Walk across the room,' you can bet your bionic implants that a door's going to lock or the ceiling's going to collapse, and you'll have to journey to Mt. Doom and back just to restore the status quo." ^_^

How about money? KQ1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and TSL all contain some form of coinage.
So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

Gross but good point.

....and again, gross.
