TSL: Showcase vs Game

I just found out that TSL is back and I played through the 2 episodes released and can't wait for more. However, there is one thing that kinda bothers me.

So far, it seems that TSL is simply a tool to recycle numerous characters from previous games. Don't get me wrong, I love all the old characters, but its almost as if the current story is being propelled by cameos and multiple references to past games. A little bit can be nice, but it looks almost forced right now.

A counter argument to myself would be that we are currently in the Land of the Green Isles and it would be difficult to not bring back so many old characters. I just hope that the game truly becomes "its own game" and not just a sample of all prior games by expanding into more involved new characters (we had a couple, but with very small roles), different locations and not try to make sure every old character "get's their turn".

Does anyone else feel the same way? or way different?

Big C from Cauney island

From what I understand, majority of the game is supposed to take place in the green isles.  I'm not sure about totally new locations (non green isle based), though I could only suspect getting into the minds of alex and rosella could lead to something.  Its hard to call because there are still 3 episodes to go.

Welcome to the forums sebpod!

There is a lot of nostalgia intentionally built into TSL, yes, and for a lot of reasons--we're big fans, so it's kind of hard to not do in a sense, but also (and this a bigger reason, really), it's a game that's intended to try and wrap up the series. It would be awful hard to do that without having a number of the old familiar faces in there!

But we do also have some new characters, and the story is definitely an original story and not just a rehash of old stories. Episode 3 (out on Jan. 29th!) will start really taking us further into that story.

Thanks for the response!

I totally understand what you're saying and it makes sense for wrapping things up. Having thought about it, I think maybe part of what got me was also the new voices for old characters. That being said you guys are doing great. I guess the nostalgia kicks in upon seeing the character and sometimes got slightly knocked down a few notches through the conversation. However, that is not your fault at all as it would be impossible to get all the old voices back. I guess I really miss Tony Jay for Saladin/Archdruid/Gate/(I think lamp seller?).

A question on that note actually, if you are able to answer this question at this time, will the Pawn Shop owner still have his accent?

KatieHal

He will :) We tried to maintain things like as much as we could even with new actors. Jollo, for example, still has that...well, the best word I can come up with is "silliness" aspect of his voice!

And yeah, we don't have any of the original actors, obviously; our voice actors are doing this all for free, and I have to say I think they've done a great job overall.

I completely forgot to mention that in my post!

I was playing KQ6 last night and Jollo is bang on!

I'll say. I swear, Jason Michael Victor as Graham is just uncanny. Seriously, how in the name of Daventry did you find him? I'm also going to move this topic to fan feedback. I think it fits better there.

Yeah- I found TSL a little fangamy at first too, but it's mostly in part 1. Part 2 starts to get into the original storyline and more OCs, which is what started to hook me. I'm picking that Part 3 is going to be fully over catch up chatter and will full steam ahead with plot and banter.

I think it feels fangamy due to the lack of OCs in play right now. The druid on the Isle of mist and all are new however, and I'm sure that there'll be alot of new characters as they walk into the dream realms.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of fandom anyways. IT's great to see our favourite characters at it again ^^

You mean the Arch-Druid? He's not new; he was in KQVI. Didn't really have a big role, but he was there.
So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

Is visiting the IoM necessary for completing the game? I can't remember if there are any essential items there.

In KQ6, you have to go at least once, but you don't encounter any Druids on the first trip. If you're going for the best ending/going to the Underworld, you do have to go back, and that's when you actually meet the Arch Druid.

Yes, because even in the short path, you need the Beast's Mirror of Truth to expose the genie, and in order to get to the beast you need the sickle from the Druid camp.

You can also meet him if you wander north of the camp on your first visit. ;)

I guess I remember less about KQVI than I thought...What is this "Mirror of Truth"? Does the Beast/Prince give it to you once you bring him Beauty?

Yeah; it's the mirror that you show Death to make him cry; the mirror that shows the true nature of people. For the Beast, it showed him as a prince. For Death, it showed his long life of torment. For Cassima at the wedding, it revealed that she was really the Genie in disguise.

Ah, right, I remember now. I should replay KQVI some time.

Wouldn't that result in a death scenario though? I thought that would have killed Alexander...

Yup. Same thing happens if you go north from the beach as well.

Well, yeah, but you still meet him briefly. ;)

Huh- I haven't played KQ6 in AGES. I'm currently going through KQ2, and KQ6 was the one I was going to do next (best for last ;) ) I'll keep an eye out for it.
