The full review is here, by Patrick Gann.

He preferred the musical pieces to the vocal theme, but overall was quite pleased with Austin's work on this soundtrack!

QuoteThere's a lot of really good music on this OST, though a lot of it is built around pianos and strings (both bowed and plucked). My absolute favorite track from the set is the opening to the second disc (and, I assume, the second episode): "The Thousand Years Prophecy." It is simply beautiful. The long-form style of the piece, including a great overall rise and fall (with mini-rises and mini-falls throughout), serves to make it a memorable piece of music. And at over four minutes, it's a great piece to use for a period of relaxation or meditation.

The soundtrack for TSL is amazing, and it just gets better with each passing episode! I think a lot of people will like the music for episode 3  :P

Episode 3's music is to DIE for. Especially with Austin screaming off the top of his lung on the centerpiece tracks.

And I'm so glad Austin got such a shiny review. I too see a very bright career! It's great to see people who've worked so hard on this project get this kind of praise.

Too bad they didn't like The Day You Were Gone, although I'm very glad he recognizes Amy as a very talented singer. Maybe he'll like the other version of Day You Were Gone which will be included in the Volume 2 of the soundtrack better :)

Austin is such an amazing musician I'm just blown away by all the hard work he poured into the game. I think he's going to go far in life. And frankly, I LOVED the Day You Were Gone! I think Amy is a very talented singer and a good narrator too!

As a matter of fact, Austin does have a forum account. I'm not sure what it is off the top of my head, but I think it involves his last name.

And yes, Amy Kurylo, the woman who sang "The Day You Were Gone" is also the Narrator of TSL. She does a pretty good job in both I think.

I thought it was funny that the one composition the reviewer really criticized was Checkmate, which wasn't even written by Austin! XD (I personally like the piece, but whatever.)

Interesting review.  I pretty much agree with every aspect of it.  In fact, one of the main reasons I memorized the URL to go straight to the TSL forums back in the day was so I wouldn't have to hear The Day You Were Gone autoplay on the main page.  *shudder*

Other than that though, this is a very high quality soundtrack.  I must admit I'm not familiar with the Checkmate tune, but I'm sure it didn't stand out to me as being particularly bad, otherwise I would definitely have remembered it.

I don't mind TDYG. Some people love it, some people hate it, I sometimes love it and sometimes just like it.

We always wanted to use a track called "Inside My Dreams". This is an incredibly beautiful track. But the composer left TSL a long tiome ago, and later we couldn't coordinate well to make this song happen. The song is just amazing, and I'm actually trying to push to get it into the game.

And we also have the slowed down version of TDYG too, which is much according to the soundtrack.

Oh man, I want that song in the game SO bad! It's so great. (I like TDYG, too, of course, but...Inside My Dreams is just so beautiful.)

It's not that The Day You Were Gone is bad per se...it's just very VERY not my type of song.  I tend to prefer the orchestrated instrumental music for the fantasy genre anyway--for the most part I think lyrics and vocals distract from the mood-setting qualities of the music (especially if they are too cheesy.)  Although, I did like Into the West from LOTR, but then, that was professionally done.  Lyrics are probably the single most difficult thing to do well when it comes to songwriting, so it's not surprising that that song, out of the whole soundtrack, was the one that drew the critic's ire.

Cez

have you heard the other version of TDYG? The one posted here a while ago? That's a little more in the "Into the West" vein. At least, that's what I had in mind when I requested for it.

Any chance you can send me a copy of the song? I'd like to hear it. I hope it gets into the game!

I simply love this soundtrack. I listen to it while I study because it's so beautiful and calm! It also makes me see the different scenes of the game AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO PLAY!!!!!!!

Beautiful work of art!

I probably haven't, but if you can direct me to it, I'll give it a listen.  :)

Yeah, it's definitely a lot more polished than the version I remember from back in the day.  I definitely get the Into the West vibe from this version, too.  The instrumentation and singing are a lot better than I remember from the older version.  Still not a huge fan of the melody though, particularly the "I will remember" refrain--I feel like it sounds particularly dissonant over the low cello (or is it a bass?) in those sections in this version, but not as off-pitch as I remember from the older version.  The melody in the verses is nice, though.  Also not a huge fan of the reverb-heavy drumming later in the song.  Those are all matters of personal taste though, so the adage  "different strokes for different folks" certainly applies.  ;)

Hi Everybody,

I normally don't write that often in the forum but I do enjoy reading what everybody has to say.

I'm happy to hear you are enjoying the soundtrack! The reviewer definitely seemed to not like TDYWG as a "song" but he did like the instrument version a lot which I was happy to see. I think when it comes to vocals and lyrics, it can be a more picky area sometimes. As Cesar stated, I hope he will enjoy the version of the song that isn't on the soundtrack he reviewed.

BTW, Episode 3 is going to surprise you musically and story wise. I look forward to what everyone thinks of it.
