Incidentally, Whitney Houston's version linked in that article is great; she sang it straight with just a small bit of extra fluff and a strong punch.

YES. This is beautiful.

People are only harping on about it because they are trying to find any reasons they can to make her look stupid because of the lyrical mistake.

In my case, not true. I honestly didn't even notice the lyrical mistake upon first viewing, but the decorations instantly annoyed me. It's personal preference.

Americans take the national anthem waaaay too seriously. And the American flag for that matter. And the country.

My interest in the integrity of the Nation Anthem is musical, not patriotic.

I just watched that video (I was too busy watching the Puppy Bowl yesterday to see the Super Bowl), and I don't think she did that badly.  It's rather easy to mess up lines that you've heard so often that you don't think about them.  As for the vocal embellishments, did anyone else notice that people seemed to cheer on the really loud/high notes?

True, Whitney Houston's version was better, but a lot of it had to do with the freakin' orchestra backing her up!

And for someone who does pop music for a living, she looked and sounded rather classy.  Besides, if the worst thing talked about her is messing up a line in the National Anthem, I doubt she has anything to worry about.
I have my cake and eat it too, until it's gone.  Then I can't do either.

Aww!  You have the Sword of Hugging +3!  All of your attacks deal affectionate damage!

I can't believe I'm the only one offended by what she done did to my country's glorious anthem!  The CIA should arrest her and charge her for treason!  I don't know about none of you fellers, but I don't "proudly watch" nothin'!  I watch ramparts, dernit!  And I don't even watch ramparts!  I watch o'er the ramparts for gallant streaming!  As far as I'm concerned, this is my country that I done love, and if Aguilera don't like it, well, she sure as shootin' can go back to Al-Qaedaland where she done come from!

Kidding.  Absolutely kidding.

She clearly didn't realize what she was doing, which is why she's so seamless in her mistake.  No awkward pause, nothing.  She just kept going.  Personally I find it amazing anyone can even find their voice singing a solo in front of that many people, plus the rest of the country watching on live t.v.  Though, for the record, doon I'm with you.  I have never been a fan of the verbal acrobatics.  It's a personal style, but it always drives me crazy.

Besides, it's just an anthem.  I love my country as much as the next guy, but it's just a song.  If you need a song to prove you love your country, then that's just sad.  Plus the lyrics that Francis Scott Key wrote aren't about the Revolutionary War.  They're about the war that got our capitol burned.  And the tune wasn't written for Key's poem.  Key's poem was set to a drinking song.  A drinking song.

Not kidding.  Absolutely not kidding.

I knew that about the drinking song and the specific battle, but I had always thought the melody was the same.

Eh. I don't, not since she does that sort of thing all the time (concerts and tours). She lives for the stage.

I love watching people's faces when I tell them that. "It's a what?!" ^_^
So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

I've tried to imagine what this pre-National Anthem drinking song sounded like, but it's too weird. It doesn't seem to be drinking song-type melody at all.

Drinking songs used to sound quite different. :P Mozart composed my favourite one. :P It's better in German, but I can't find that version.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you do the USA's national anthem.

Wow that was incredible...thats crazy... :D As for Christina...she isn't the first one to do it. Bryan Adams screwed up our national anthem a few years back and they ridiculed him the same way. They are people too, they make mistakes.
