Ok so I finally got Kings Quest 5 from a friend and now it wont work.

Please help me out. Every time I try to get Kings Quest 5 to start it says “Insufficient local memory: 36934”. I believe it I have the 1990 version. It is on CD. I can play it from DOS but it has no speech sound there. I would like to get it playing from windows. Here are my stats………..

Operating System: Windows XP Professional

Chip: Pentium 4 CPU 1400MHz

Memory: 512 MB of ram

Video Card: Radeon 7200

I have tried using VDMS but that didn’t work. I also tried all the compatibility options, i.e. windows 95/run in 256 colors/run in 640x480.

Please explain what I should do to make it work. Thanks

Try getting a program called "DOS Lite". I've heard that works for running older DOS-based games sometimes. Just do a google search and you should find it.

Since sound is required, I just want to say that KQ5 does not like the full-duplex ability of sound cards so you might want to disable that feature before you play the game. 8)

I don't even think Windows 3.11 existed when KQV came out so no wonder it's having memory problems.  ;D

There's a program I use for older games called Dosbox.  It runs them fine, but there's some sound issues.  It's basically another DOS emulator; it reports a slower cpu speed to the game so that it can run properly.

How do you disable full-duplex for sound cards???

Also, I have the version where there is an option for installing the Windows version and the DOS version. Did your CD only come with the DOS version? Or is it the Windows version of the game that gives you an error?

It's usually somewhere in the settings or properties of the soundcard.

The cd has both DOS and Windows versions. Under DOS the game works fine except there is no speech sound.

I tried DOS emulators but they never work. I manually set my graphics to 640X480 256 colors and still I get that memory error.

I have another partition on this computer that has windows 98. I installed the windows version on that and it worked! speech and everything, but I dont want to switch to that everytime I play.

I read in alot of places that it can be played on Windows XP. I tried every setting and I still get that message. It sucks.

Did you try DOSBox? I tested a few games on that and they work okay, but the sound is still buggy.

And if you're really liking KQ5, just switch when you boot up, it's easier. I have a few DOS games I like to play that don't run in Win98's DOS, only in Pure Dos, but I just boot up in DOS and type "win" to open up Windows when I'm done. It's easier.

Although... I wonder if there's an option to always come up in DOS mode? After all, it only takes three letters and enter to go to Windows...
