King’s Quest II: Romancing the Throne

————————————————————

Some years have passed since Daventry’s three mystical treasures were recovered and their rescuer, Sir Graham, was made King of Daventry. Despite his success as a king and the love of his people, he finds himself pining away of loneliness inside the castle. One day, while contemplating this, the Magic Mirror grabs his attention with a vision of a beautiful maiden locked away inside a tower made of quartz. The mirror goes on to show Graham a vision of the kingdom of Kolyma, wherein he might find the means to reach this tower. His heart already captured, Graham is determined to rescue this fair maiden, and so dusts off his adventurer’s hat and sets out for Kolyma.

The tropical kingdom of Kolyma was perilous for the love-stricken king. Discovering the door on the other side of a seemingly endless chasm presented Graham with a challenge… for the door was locked and the only clue to the whereabouts of the key was a note hinting at making a splash. And make a splash he did! After befriending a mermaid, Graham was granted an audience with Neptune, King of the Seas, who gladly gave Graham the key he was searching for in exchange for the trident that Graham had discovered abandoned on the beach.

Upon returning to the door and unlocking it, Graham was met not with a view of the Quartz tower, but with another door, this one with a note hinting that the key might be found by one who sets his sights high. By chance did Graham happen to come across a genie locked away inside a lamp, who granted Graham three treasures, among them a magic carpet and a silver bridle. Graham was able to ride the magic carpet high up to a lonesome peak above Kolyma. Only by freeing an enchanted pegasus with the silver bridle was Graham able to find the second key inside a cave.

After returning to the land below and making his way back to the door to unlock it, Graham was met with yet another door. The note on this door hinted at the key being in a place most dark and foul. Having spied a dilapidated castle during his journey, Graham made his way there. Only by securing passage across a poisoned moat, passing a bramble-filled courtyard, and making his way past a pair of ghostly guardians was Graham able to find the key locked away inside the castle…and deep within the crypt of Count Dracula himself! Securing the key was of utmost urgency and the stalwart King quickly dispatched the dread vampire. With key in hand, he made his way back to the door and stepped through to a strange and magical world.

Finding the Quartz Tower, Graham ascended the steps and after contending with a hungry lion, he came face to face with the maiden from the Mirror’s vision. Valanice was her name and she was indeed the fairest of all maidens in Kolyma. So fair was she that the wicked witch Hagatha had imprisioned her in the tower, Graham learned, hoping to forever seal away her purity, kindness, and beauty. Graham thwarted that plan and they returned to Kolyma, where the two were married by a local monk and made their way back to Daventry to live happily ever after.
