The Faces Behind The Story: Michael Fortunato and Aaron Light

by on May.21, 2014, under developer diary, featured, phoenix people

Ten years of dreams, stories and many faces where to purchase cialis and names to know. I must admit it hasn’t been easy to grasp so much in so little time. I know it is impossible to share all I want from so long in just a few weeks but it’s been quite a bit of a nostalgia to look back and find myself surrounded with such beautiful and inspiring people.

We started learning about Cesar Bittar and Richard Flores- head honchos magnificos, Phoenix very own core and soul; then it was Katie Hallahan and Weldon Hathaway representing our strength and drive, and now I present to you the two that I think represent best what passion and dedication is all about: Michael Fortunato and Aaron Light.

Let’s get started with Michael, who is some sort of Technical Artist Genius – He is an actor, he can code, design, illustrate, cook and sing. He is some sort of multitalented cookie which sometimes doesn’t even feel like it’s real, and when it comes down to facts, he is quite remarkable and by far one of the most reliable and responsible people in the team. That kind of person that is not only up to the task to what’s being thrown his way, he is dependable and resourceful to be there when anything else falls apart – because his talent is endless, just like his heart and kindness.

Seriously though, I have got to admit that in 10 years of my career I have rarely ever seen anyone be as technically savvy and artistically gifted – usually one person is more proficient in one thing than another – but I don’t know what kind of voodoo mystery Mr. Fortunato how much is viagra 50 holds in his pocket that he is seriously just good at simply everything he does. This is probably why Richard and Michael have had the most endearing and loving bromance in all Phoenix years, they are practically brothers at this point – they both share quite the strong drive for perfection, this acute sense of quality and most important of all, the biggest of hearts. Michael Fortunato is like that one friend that simply does anything to help someone, he gives 120% every single time.

Needless to say, because of talent like his is exactly why Phoenix has survived and thrived for as long as it has. People like that are as unique cialis uk and special they are to find.

Let’s hear his story from his own words:

Back in 2001, I believe, I was doing a search on the internet.  It was a long time ago, so I’m not sure about what I was searching for.  I’d like to say I was searching to see if Sierra/Vivendi was going to make any new games in their Quest series, but I think I don’t actually know for sure.  Whatever the search was, one of the returned links caught my eye.  It was a link for King’s Quest IX.  I thought, “Cool! A new King’s Quest game.”  Until I clicked the link, I didn’t realize it was a fan project.  So I started perusing the site and saw that the team was looking for volunteer artists.  I decided, what the heck, I’ll send in some of my work and we’ll see if they would utilize me on the team.  I got a reply back, I’m not sure if it was from Rich or Ces, but they asked me to paint a version of the docks at the Green Isles, so I did.  They liked it and I joined the team.

When I first joined, there wasn’t really a game yet in place.  Ces was rewriting the story, game engines were being researched.  It hadn’t been decided if the game was going to be 2D or 3D.  So, I mostly did some concept art and some art for the Four Winds newsletter.  Once there was a game engine in place, I started working on some of the textures for the scenes.  Eventually, once we knew exactly what engine we were using, I started painting the background textures or cleaning up the textures, lighting the scenes and working on some of the special effects.

Now, I still clean up textures, light scenes, and handle most of the particle and weather effects in our games.  But I also am doing more modeling and cleaning up models, handling some simple animations (non-character based), helping to establish the look of our games (along with Rich), creating some of the marketing materials for our games (most are handled by the marketing team – I’m just the overflow), building the company websites, and sometimes, designing a game’s UI.  I think that’s everything… oh, and I handled directing the voice overs for The Silver Lining and Cognition.

I think the most memorable would be the 3 weeks (I think it was 3) that Rich and I worked tirelessly on the intro video to The Silver Lining.  Rich came down to my place (I was still living in New York at the time) and we barely slept.  It was a lot of late nights and microwaved nachos.  4am was our cartoons break (I believe Gargoyles and King of the Hill) and then either back to work or a quick cat nap.  The two of us both had a great time overall and learned a hell of a lot about putting a video together.  I’m still very proud of the way that intro video turned out.

The magical and brief career of Cesar’s voice over.

About my favorite Phoenix game character, the first one that pops into my head is Hole-In-The-Wall from The Silver Lining.  Probably because I recorded Ces as he made the sounds.  It was at Rich’s house in Montreal.  So there was Ces, myself (of course), Rich, I believe Katie and Petter (one of our programmers who worked on TSL) were there too.  Some of us made attempts at doing the Hole-In-The-Wall but Cesar nailed it.  The actual recording was difficult because we were all cracking up so much.  The same could be said for Rich’s portrayal of the cup.  He did the “hot hot hot” voice.  I think those were on the same day – at least during the same trip.  But, yeah, Hole-In-The-Wall because of Ces’ memorable performance – hilarious!

Next we have Aaron Light, who is without a shadow of a doubt among one of my favorite people from Phoenix. He was this kooky kid back then who everyone adored, even if he would say the creepiest or most random comments ever, but Aaron was part of the family since day one. Having founded at large most of the TSL community has allowed me to meet such remarkable and just wonderful people, and Aaron testifies to that every single day. In fact, I would personally consider him the most successful story from all Phoenix. He means the world to me, and today I know to most of Phoenix as well.

He started out as someone so nice and so kind, and he turned out to be one of the most relevant community members – everyone would know him. He was always there when someone would have a bad day, he would always listen, he would do the impossible just trying to help and all of these qualities are still very much present today. He joined the team and became some sort of Programming Wizard. He probably has the worst sense of color coordination in the world – I sincerely have got no idea how he went through in art department once upon a time! But there isn’t anything that Aaron can’t fix when it comes to technical knowledge. Programming wise, he is genuinely efficient, dedicated and talented when it comes to putting stuff together; if it’s broken he will fix it, even if he must do it from scratch and most important of all – he never gives up.

Needless to say, Aaron is someone I am proud of as part of our community, part of our team and most important of all as a frand. He has grown so much, and the fact that he has done that inside Phoenix makes it all far more special than I could probably describe.

Let us read the story through him:

I got started with Phoenix Online back in 2002 as a fan on the forums. Every year after Mask Of Eternity was released, I Googled for King’s Quest 9 in desperate hopes of a proper King’s Quest game that didn’t involve killing zombies. At one point I started helping with the creation aspect by being a part-time colorist for The Silver Lining, in which I made Valanice look like Spiderman. Sadly, Cez didn’t like my color choice and I went with a green theme instead. Starting in 2010 I finally joined the programming team, where I’ve been ever since.

Most memorable Phoenix moments would be FOU! All the general crazy fun we used to do, from Haven to Chamber.

Don’t worry Malachi, I like you. This is courtesy of Mikael Palsio and Elisa Pavinato – For more artwork and silly doodles, you are welcome to visithttp://www.pinterest.com/postudios/cognition-fan-art/

About my favorite Phoenix character, I kinda like Cordelia. But nothing beats the Pink Poodle and Muubius.

Not much else to say besides that going through the profiles of both Michael and Aaron makes me wonder what could we possibly do without them? Michael is basically the glue and soul of most development affairs, whereas Aaron Is like this hands on super kind help in every single team. It seems like a constant revelation to understand how many Phoenix members are multitalented and we all reach out beyond our competence. It is part of the team culture to care about what you do, also what you can do for others as well.

Coming next week there will be a surprise considering it will be the very last week of this monthly special. Hopefully you have enjoyed these as much as I have doing them, doodles and all!
