Hmm, I have an old demo version of KQ3 Enhanced: A Heir Raising Tale.

http://www.mediafire.com/?xwtmk582w65cpoc (Beta 5 Demo, VGA Graphics)

http://crystalshard.net/zip/KQ3PLUS.ZIP (Beta 7 Demo, AGI, but most complete puzzles, and 8 minute intro)

I've never played through the entire demos, but I understand its a good portion of the first third through the game. I don't know if it reaches to the Alexander getting on the ship or not.

Its interesting take on KQ3, in that its more linear than the released versions of KQ3, where events happen based on the inventory items you pick up. From what I remember Alexander, there are some day/night cycles, where Alexander actually sleeps in his bedroom. Some items only appear after certain events take place. Manannan is more picky, about what food item he wants to eat, etc. I think it might have done away with the internal clock.

Here is the walkthrough;

Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

I would very much like to play the demo! Try mediafire. I love media fire.

I'll see what I can do, if anyone has other demos of cancelled KQ or SQ  games let me know?

Well, I don't have it anymore, but before A Tale of Two Kingdoms became it's own standalone game, it was originally KQ2 and a half. I had a demo of it at one point, but the computer that had it is no longer in my possession. If you can scrounge it up somewhere on the net, that would be great. I'm pretty sure the original KQ2 and a half site is still up too. It was a pretty cool idea, I'm just sad that they changed the plot completely to be a standalone game.

I have links to Kq2 1/2 website archives on omnipedia, but I'm not sure if I have the demo anymore. I know I played it once.

It was a pretty cool idea, just really sad that they scrapped it. But hey, at least we're getting Kingdom of Sorrow as a game! Who's gonna turn The Floating Castle into a game? That was my favorite KQ book so far. I haven't read See No Weevil, but I am intend on acquiring a copy of it sometime.

Alright, here it is. Don't know i f its a permanent upload, but get it while its hot.

Hmm, speaking of fan game ideas, I think it might be fun to do a space quest/KQ crossover satire game, based on the King's Quest Spoof KQ47:Quest for Disk Space in SQ4. If its a spoof can Activision nix it?

Thanks fot the link! I'm downloading it now! As for a satire, I don't know if Activision can nix it or not. I'm tempted to say no, but I'm not an expert.

Well it seems, KQIII+HRT demo does not appear to be vista/win 7 compatible, as it uses 320x240 graphics. I don't know how to get past that. It does work on Windows XP though.

If you have time, and if you get it working for you, would care to create a walkthrough for it? As well as plot description for the omnipedia (explaining differences, and changes)? I don't have easy access to an XP machine, and am pretty busy with other things to try to figure it out myself.

Do you know how to run things in compatibility mode? I don't have access to a windows machine at all at the moment; I'm on my macbook pro. I will have windows access in due time though...

I'm having a problem even with windows xp, "problem initializing grapics mode 320x200... try running the setup program..." :-\

It's definitely running on an old Inspiron 9300, I have. That's a laptop computer with an Nvidia 6800 card.

Ya I know about compatiblity mode, but as far as I know that only allows you to downgrade to 640x480 graphics mode.

So some differences, I'm noticing. The food is scattered aroun the kitchen, the mutton roast is up on a shelf, the bread is on the table in its usual location. The fruit is on a barrel, near the table. You can't get the fruit early on, because its "too green, and needs to ripen".

You can hide items in the barrels in the kitchen. The fly is alive up in the tower (so it looks like you'll probably need to find a fly swatter to kill it).

When Manannan goes to sleep, the demo cycles to night time (only in AGI style graphics). The tapestry easter egg makes a reference to KQ2.5  :suffer:. In the library, you can also look at random books for an extra point, there are three books to read. One about low and high magic, another about countering magic, and one about hybrid humans/animals (speaks of "Canites", "Bird-men" of the Green Isles, and the Bear race living in Llewdor).

I couldn't figure out where the book was, to move and open the basement though.

Its honestly too bad it wasn't completed, it has alot of interesting ideas.

Blackthorne

I'll host it over at Infamous Adventures.  You'll always have an available download link there.  Just PM me details about where to get the file and I'll give you the link.

Blackthorne, thanks. The link is above, if you want to dload it now. Hmm, and if you got any gurus, that want to find a way to make it compatible with modern systems, that would be awesome.

Hmm, there might be a workaround, if this game is using a version of early AGS, one that works for the satirical QFG41/2. Here is the work around, if anyone wants to give it a try:

QuoteThe rare Windows version will not install on modern computers without creating a workaround. To get the windows version to work, create a shortcut to QFG4.EXE, and add the line "--setup" at the end of the shortcut's Target field. This will load up the graphics and sound setup window. On modern machines switch the graphics to 640 x 480. For best results play in full screen mode. Once you have changed the settings then you can use the QFG4.EXE to enter the game.

I'll give it a try, and let you know my results.

Edit: It works, it will pull up the setup screen, and you can set it to 640x480 mode. Which will work on modern systems.

Here is what you need to do;

Create a shortcut to the KQ3.EXE (demo file), and add the line "--setup" at the end of the shortcut's Target field. This will load up the graphics and sound setup window. On modern machines switch the graphics to 640 x 480. For best results play in full screen mode. Once you have changed the settings then you can use the KQ3.EXE to enter the game.

Edit 2:
Hmm, here is a link to an alternate version of the demo, KQ3+:A Heir Raising Tale, without the VGA graphics (this is the Beta 7 version). This version also contains the 8 minute introduction, that would have come with the game, it may have more of the game's puzzles.

Hmm, now that the demo will have a host, can someone rename this thread to "King's Quest III+:A Heir Raising Tale Demos"?

Thanks Baggins! Still didn't work on my laptop but that trick worked great on my desktop. Pretty interesting so far, too bad it got canceled. :-\

Baggins

cool, glad you got it to work on one of your systems.

Hmm, be sure to play the BETA 7 version, although its not as 'pretty', it has the most complete puzzles, has the enhanced 8-minute introduction, and goes up to day 7 in the game.

Beta 5 version is mostly good for having an idea what it would have looked like, had the VGA been finished.

The Editor in me is so chafing at the fact the title is 'A Heir' and 'An Heir' as it should be!

There's also this introduction demo Navynuke, Muzlak, and I made before it was turned into the official AGDI KQ3 remake.
