Its all so true
I don't get why people who say they hate Twilight actively seek out information on it. Makes me a little suspicious how much they actually "hate" it. :o
I am going to say it.....
newmoonwasntthatbad!
*whew* ok i said it.
the movie.... it was decent i guess. the first one, however, sucked.
I dislike the use of muse songs in twilight. Irespect that whatserface who writes the books likes muse but muse and twilight don't mix.
Stephenie Meyer seems to think so. She thanks them in her acknowledgements at the end of every book. I didn't know that they were in the movie, too. Lame!
People go out of their way because the books had promise and started off okay, but then....downward spiral, seriously!
I used to like them. I went through the first 3 really quickly, enjoyed them for the popcorn reads they were, and then....well, then Breaking Dawn happened. I read it, put it down, and thought....WTF just happened?! And then all the flaws in the rest of the series became startlingly obvious to me.
Plus it's really just so easily mockable. :)
True, I enjoy the books and I still love making fun if them. Some of the Edward/Bella lines are so gag-inducing that you have to mock them. I'll sign notes to my sister, "Look after my heart--I've left it with you!" :P
And agreed, I had to reread Breaking Dawn immediately after I finished it--I was like, "Did I really just understand everything that happened?"

Ugh. It looks like either a really fresh tattoo or she got a slight rash.
I've read the first book thinking, "Hey, vampires! I'm a Buffy fan. This could be awesome!" Long story short, I was disappointed. Granted, when I heard about what happened to Bella in the fourth book, I thought of Jeff Foxworthy's story about this guy whose nipple was bitten off by a beaver, which was added to the list of ways you might be a redneck. I'm sure they're only splitting the movie to piggyback on Harry Potter.
As for the reviews, Donner's not bad (I totally didn't notice Edward's uneven nipples. That was scary and funny), but these two are hilarious:

I couldn't even get through the first book. All my friends told me that I was missing out on a great series, so I decided to give it a chance. There's nothing mystical or romantic about the book, so I don't know exactly what the author was going for. :-\
Terra, that's pretty much exactly what I thought!
Haids, the answers is: nothing happened. Absolutely nothing happened.
That's what irks me the most. All that build-up....and NOTHING. No one loses anything, sacrifices anything, everyone just gets what they want. Ugh. I wanted a huge bloody battle, dammit!
And then the other two great sins: vampires DO NOT sparkle, and of course the ruining of Jacob Black by turning him into Pedowolf.

No, she just got a C-section by tooth. :X
Sorry tess--I meant to write Terra!
Ugh, yeah. What exactly is so terrible about being a vampire in those books? Nothing! You're gorgeous, athletically gifted beyond measure, live forever, can walk in the daytime, nigh-impossible to kill, and you can choose to not dirnk human blood if you want. Um...yeah, the only thing they need to worry about is being accused of being covered in body glitter at inappropriate times. :P

What I don't get, though, is this: vampires in Twilight are cold to the touch, right? How could you stand to kiss, let alone do non-G-rated-forum stuff (this is an assumption based on the C-section) with, someone who is freezing cold? I can't imagine it being at all pleasant.

More on the procreation though. How can Edward "make a baby" with Bella if he doesn't have any blood to . . . you know? :-X
Also, wasn't this whole story inspired by a dream that Stephanie Meyer had about vampires? It's no wonder why it's so weird. ::)
There are a number of questions about how he managed to get her pregnant, including that Meyer said vampires don't have any human body fluids left when they turn--they're all basically replaced by the venom that turns another person into a vampire. (Not a direct quote, but the gist of it...in other words, yes, by her own rules, he should've been lacking a number of things that would lead to getting Bella pregnant!)
It was. And that can be a perfectly fine way to get story ideas, it's happened to me, but....serious execution fail.

Dreams can be used in a story, but I think in moderation. Otherwise, you're using raw subconscious material to etch a storyline that needs to make sense to the audience. That's kind of why I think Twilight failed in its execution. Even people who were obsessed with vampires looked at Twilight and said, "WTF is that?"
This thread, especially this most recent line of discussion, is making me very glad I never bothered with Twilight.

Wait, what? So, not only should Bella not be pregnant, but she should be a vampire, too? That's a pretty big plot hole.
Though I suppose the necessary cells could be produced by the body after Eddie became a vampire and delivered in the poison...but that would still make Bella a vampire.

I thought this was after the C-section. Bella demanded she hold her baby despite the fact all of her bones were shattering and was bleeding out, Edward gave it to her being the whipped p**** he is, and then it bit her nipple with its vampire teeth, finishing her off.

If these vampires technically are dead, they wouldn't be able to produce new cells or the necessary chemicals to sustain their bodies, let alone produce s**** cells or even get an erection. I doubt blood cells have all of the necessary proteins to allow for cell reproduction, though depending on what the victim ate or what hormones was going through his/her body, that might provide enough nutrients.
I'm also curious about the animals that the Cullens suck blood from. Would there be a bunch of vampire bears or something in the woods? Or vampire deer? Or vampire squirrels?
By the end of the series, Bella IS a vampire. If we wanted to get technical, which...ew!, then by Meyer's logic, she probably should've already been one thanks to certain, um, actions taken. Also, I'm going to slap a spoiler warning on the title of this thread!
Ohh, yeah, it did bite her while trying to nurse, forgot about that. Ew. But the C-section obviously was before this part. God, that birthing scene was a bloody awful mess out of the worst horror movie ever! Seriously!
I think when they hunted for animals to drink from, they killed them outright. So probably no vampire bears. (ahh!)

'Cause Edward tells her, "No, Renesmee!" like he's scolding her for biting her mom. Oh em freaking gee. This discussion is making me laugh. *Wipes away tears*
It's a combination of "Renee" (Bella's mom) and "Esme" (Edward's mom.) Her middle name is "Carlie," a combination of Charlie (Bella's dad) and Carlisle (Edward's dad.) :P
Yup. That happened.
Man, this is why I can't NOT go see the movies. Because OMG after going through reading it, hell yes, I have to see how they're going to make the clustermess that is Breaking Dawn into not just one movie, but TWO! (It's also why my friend & I who go see these together always have a few margaritas beforehand, too ;) )
If I were to ever watch these movies I'd need a few stiff ones first too! :drunk: I can't watch most books into movies. Some words were never meant to be spoken, only written. Most of the words in Twilight were definitely not meant to be spoken. Ever.
That's not a bad idea. These movies might be funnier when wasted.

Seriously, we should get together, get wasted, watch these movies and discuss how Bella represents Congress, Jasper is a parody on clowns, the physics of how shirts are magnetically repelled from "werewolves" (really? How can someone confuse lycanthropy with shape shifting?) and Renesmee represents what not to do when handling beavers.

yeah, yeah, reviving an old thread.
I haven't read the books, but I've watched the 3 films. I actually liked the first one a lot. There was something about the weirdness of Bella/Edward relationship that I really liked. The movie had something charming about it.
Then Wolves, love triangles and all the other crap happened. And bleh. Eclipse had some good stuff in it, but overall it didn't make much sense and it was all a big bleh.
But yeah, when I watched the first movie, which I was pretty much dragged into the movies cause I didn't want to watch that crap, I found myself very into it. Again, there was something about these two guys that were both completely unconventional characters that was very cool. And then, clichés happened.

What! Regular vampires don't SPARKLE, Cesar! That's brand new! ;P
NO vampire sparkles! None! Those are not vampires!
Yeah. The story itself had potential, but...just kept turning into crap every single time. And once you know that Meyer originally was going to jump from Twilight to Breaking Dawn, but decided to fill in the intervening time (and/or her publishers told her to, I think?)--it's very obvious. Because really, pretty much nothing changes!
Quote from: KatieHal on November 21, 2010, 09:51:32 PM

Yeah-ha! They suck blood and are cold to the touch and have superhuman strength!
Oh, and they can father half-human children.
If that's not the description of a true vampire, I don't know what is. :pleased:
A soulless creature of the night who is killed by sunlight, and certainly not one who fathers demon-spawn. Also, must have fangs!
I am no fan of Twilight (haven't read or seen anything related), but what's wrong with exploring/expanding upon the classic archetypes a little?
It isn't the fact that she changed the vampire archetype. Most vampire related stuff has their own spin. I'm particularly a fan of Blade's take as well as World of Darkness. It's the idea that she pretty much rendered them harmless and perfect. Sure, they drink blood, but they don't have to kill humans if they don't want to. They can go out in the sun and sparkle without actually getting hurt. Add the super strength, speed, immortality, and a psychic power, and you have pretty much the perfect being. There's no downside to it anymore, and there's no moral dilemma. And as for the "losing your soul" issue, it's not even established that the vampires in Twilight ever do lose their souls. They still act like people (sort of) and express feelings and reminisce. If anything, Bella's the one without a soul. She doesn't even give a thought to how her parents would feel or even her own boyfriend, and she ditches her human "friends" at the drop of a hat.
Oh, and if you want cliché, here's a fanfic with pretty much the exact same story line, only much funnier, partially due to LittleKuriboh doing the voices. As a warning, there is a section with badly written male homosexual sex in the first part, but the "plot twist" at the end is worth it.

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/bt/the-sage/fanfic-theatre/27667-sagevampire-stalker-part2
What Terra said. The problem is more with the writing than with the ideas, by far. Saying 'those aren't vampires!' is just fun :)
But yes, she eliminates there being ANY consequences or moral dilemmas to the choice of becoming a vampire. You get to be gorgeous, athletic, have special powerz, Bella the super speshul snowflake never even has to deal with thirsting for human blood like every other vampire supposedly does, and the humans she cares about remotely she doesn't end up having to give up either. There's no sacrifice made by any of the main characters in all of the books, at all--they all just get what they want without having to give anything up to get it. It's exceedingly poor story-telling.
And yet it has sold a huge amount of copies...How do you explain that?
On the one hand, I have no freaking idea. On the other, I have many.
One--the character of Bella is written with little of her own personality and identifying physical traits for the first book. It's extremely easy to let your perspective be hers and let yourself 'be' the main character, in that sense.
Two--girl moves to a new town and is instantly the subject of everyone's fascination, fawned over by all the boys, then the one boy who never dates ANYONE pays attention to her and is oh so handsome and it turns that she is special and so is he and they are in love and there's danger but he saves her and blah blah blah. It's not deep, but what teenage girl doesn't want to think she's special and secretly beloved by all and that a special boy will love her too? Oh, and then, later on, another super special boy who's handsome will also do anything for her because he loves her! So that's not one but two ultimate wish fulfillment fantasies.
Three--the relationship is entirely safe for her. There is never any pressure from Edward for sex, but rather quite the opposite. So the perfect handsome boy who's super special and will do anything for her, will also never pressure her to do anything she doesn't want to do--not sex, not turning her into a vampire, nothing. The only thing he ever pressure her to do? Get married and live happily ever after with him. (Okay, well, that and stop seeing her best friend who's a werewolf that he hates, but let's focus on the two of them for now.) It's a big turnaround from most teen pop culture, which usually have the exact opposite happening and people having sex and having consequences etc. Which is more realistic, yes, but not more appealing to those who want the totally safe relationship.
Also, excellent marketing.
So there's why it's so popular. Something doesn't need to actually be good to be successful and popular, though, or vice versa. Even I read the first 3 books and enjoyed them as easy popcorn reads; then I read the 4th book, finished it, put it down and went....waaaait a second, this is total crap! I've been had!
Quote from: LadyTerra on November 21, 2010, 11:20:39 PMI'm particularly a fan of Blade's take . . .

 Thank you for that, Enchantermon.
The funny thing is Disney purposely did the exact same thing with Hannah Montanna. All of her songs are about her double life, but they're written in a way where preteens can sing along and make it about themselves. It's crap in content, but marketing genius. I'm pretty sure that Stephanie Meyer just got lucky.

Yay for new words! :D
Enchantermon: in the books, when the sex scenes come up, Meyer utilizes the tried and true "fade to black" method to get around writing the sex scenes. That's fine, they're young adult novels, no big deal.
However, her method for letting us know some details and tidbits of what happened after black was faded to? Not Bella reminiscing fondly, not the two having some pillow talk about oh man, was that good for you when XYZ happened. No, no.
Her method is having Bella wake up in a bed covered in feathers (note: in at least one instance, the fade to black had her in a completely different location beforehand), her body covered in bruises, a broken headboard IIRC, and no recollection of how all this happened. She asks Edward flat out to recount for her what occurred. For example, the feathers? He bit a few pillows in the throws of ecstasy. The bruises are due to his ridiculous vampire strength and losing some control of that during the same. All of which are usually, y'know, the sort of thing one would probably remember if they were awake, coherent, and an active and willing participant in the activities going on at the time!
Oh...
So, what, did he accidentally knock her unconscious and still continued to have sex with her? That's.....pretty messed up.
LOL! I have tears in my eyes after reading your posts, Katie and Enchantermon. Thank you for that.
No, to answer your question, Enchantermon, there was no unconsciousness to be had. :D I think Katie's interpretation of the sex scene in Breaking Dawn was a tad bit different from mine (even though her interpretation had me laughing so hard my dogs started whining. ;D)
The way I understood it, Bella was also caught up in the "throes of passion" and didn't seem to notice what was going on around her--i.e., the bruises, the feathers. It wasn't that she didn't remember , she was just...uh, let's say distracted. Allow me to (oh God, am I really doing this?) reference page 89 of Breaking Dawn, after Bella discoveres her bruises: "I tried to remember this--to remember pain--but I couldn't. I couldn't recall a moment when his hold had been too tight, his hands too hard against me. I only remembered wanting him to hold me tighter, and being pleased when he did..."
She doesn't have amnesia over having sex with Edward, she just remembers the good parts. Page 109 (after Edward shows her the broken headboard): "Hmm." I frowned. "You'd think I would have heard that." "You seem to be extraordinarily unobservant when your attention is otherwise involved," [said Edward.] "I was a bit obsorbed," I admitted, blushing a deep red."
See, she knows what's happening, she just doesn't pay attention to the minor things...you know, like her husband tearing up the furniture. ::)

See, if she'd just gone with Bella being into having her pleasure involve pain, problem solved. But if that's not stated, and I don't recall anything ever saying in one direction or another, then you assume it's not the case. In which case...someone bruising you
that much? You will notice that! One bruise, maybe two, I can see how that'll turn into one of those things where later on you notice belatedly and that's that. But the extent to which it happens in the book, or is implied to? Nuh-uh!

"You seem to be extraordinarily unobservant when your attention is otherwise involved," [said Edward.] "I was a bit obsorbed," I admitted, blushing a deep red."
See, she knows what's happening, she just doesn't pay attention to the minor things...you know, like her husband tearing up the furniture. ::)
Yeah...again, maybe one or two smaller things, like a knocked over lamp or a glass that fell and no one noticed, I could see that happening. But, seriously, I don't care
how good the sex is, broken headboards and exploding pillows are not things you're going to miss!
Gah! See, this is why I can't not stick around and rant about these books and watch these trainwreck movies. Because it's just mind-boggling the stuff that's in them!
Also, thanks for getting those quotes--I gave my last three books in the series to a friend, so I no longer have the option available to me!

Katie, you're making me all blotchy and red from cry-laughing! XD
This is where I think your point about "written for young adults" comes into play. It IS unrealistic to imagine someone being so caught up that they don't realize things like "broken headboards and exploding pillows" are happening around them. Also, I must point out that Stephenie Meyer is a religious woman to three young children--she's probably a bit more squeamish about writing about heavy adult stuff than others. :)
This conversation is too funny. I can't believe that a discussion about a sex scene in a novel has lasted for a page and half. ;D

If you're going to write a romance, at least write a realistic romance. Even if it's a fantasy setting, you can still be realistic.
Exactly!
Or y'know, a realistic romance that isn't incredibly emotionally abusive and filled with manipulations. :P
Yikes. I've never read the books, but I've heard enough things like that about them that I don't really want to. :P
BTW, if you want some serious laughs and recaps of this series, I highly recommend the blog Mark Reads Twilight (So You Don't Have To) (http://markreadstwilight.buzznet.com/user/journal/4398741/mark-panasonicyouth-will-read-entire/). Awesome & hilarious. And an almost disturbing descent into total hatred of the series by the end! Good times, though. I may have plugged it before, but whatever, here it is again!

"HECK no! I forbid it!"
"Fine, I'll just be really sneaky about it and get you all PO'd at me. *Rushes to visit the wolf pack* Oh man, Edward is gonna be so mad at me!"
"Fine, Bella, I'll let you see the wolves--but if and ONLY if I can drive you there!" ::)

Okay, so we at least know Meyer actually knows how sex works. I figured she had more of a crazy waltz in mind, like the couple with the bombing game in Majora's Mask.

Gah ha ha! :suffer: My sister always said she wondered when this particular company would put out Twilight paper! It was only a matter of time. I bet this stack is selling like hotcakes.
Sadly, I must have it. I need it for my Forks pictures. ;]
These books are going to inspire a whole generation of women to seek out controlling, possessive and emotionally manipulative men.
I donno. I tried reading the first book- at first it was ok reading the diary like writing, but really, I think the only real problem with Twilight is Bella. If they took her out, the movie would have enough to make a story that I'd be interested in. It'd be a start- you know? Something you can flesh up. The royal family looked promising. I wish it was explained more. Stuff like that. And I like the Cullens. Bella is a truely horrible person though :( She's horrible to her friends, family, and the ones she loves T.T
Quote from: Arkillian on January 02, 2011, 07:45:58 AM

Do you mean the Volturi, the Italian vampires?
Yeah. If it weren't for unneccesary plot jerkiness, they could've had an interesting thing going. See, I don't actually have a huge issue with Twilight. To me, it is what it is. Edward is an unhealthy relationship for Bella cause he's a vampire, and Jacob is unhealthy cause... well, he's actually the healthy relationship of the story :/ When you date a vamp though, there will be immortality angst. I get that. We're not talking 2 humans, so you really CAN'T have a normal relationship. The relationship between Edward and Bella is actually more healthier in the book. I didn't believe it could've worked, but shortening the scene with them doing their love tango made the movie version SO bad relationship wise. The book is slower, and less stalkerish, so I'm lead to believe that Bella is an issue, cause frankly, she's a selfish b**** to me. A Mary Sue too, but that's forgivable. She doesn't actually have a redeemable bone in her body. Being a Vampire would actually GIVE her depth.
Now, before people flame me for not having an issue with sparkly vampires, I think they can work. There are SO many versions of vampires out there- who says that they can't be vampires who are sissys are non aggressive? I think they should have better vulnerabilities than having their head chopped off and burned, but otherwise, it's just flavour. IF you're reading a vampire ROMANCE story cause you want to see blood being sucked out all the time then that's not gonna be romantic. Take Bella out and put in a girl with dimension and personality though, I think twilight would be alot better.
And for those that want to see it- here's my impression of a traditionalized version of Edward Cullen- fangs and all (http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/189/b/1/Edward_Cullen_by_Arkillian.jpg)

Ooooh, spooky! I love it!
See, not if THAT was in the Twilight movie having his emo guff, you'd respect him more, right? Even if he sparkled? I think not having fangs put their vampires down, but I REALLY don't think that the sparkles were a put down. They were just a twist on a pre-existing fantasy creature. I'm cool with that. There's alot of minor things wrong with the series that makes you twinge, but really, the biggest issue is Bella.
I'd argue the relationship is still stalker-y and controlling. Actually, I'd say it's less so in the movies than the books--the movies avoided showing some of the extremes that Edward went to in his attempt to cut Bella off from Jacob.
Jacob would be the healthy relationship, except that he kinda ends up showing just how vile Bella is. She uses and manipulates him fully knowing how he feels about her. And he puts up with it. It's another abusive relationship in the end, just of a different sort. The whole series is a long chain of terrible relationships begetting other ones. Edward does it to Bella, Bella does it to Jacob...ugh. I totally agree, she's a wretched, selfish and manipulative b**** who has to sacrifice nothing in order to get everything.

Because it's a mystical vampire pregnancy! It doesn't have to follow rules!
It...has the tiniest of plots. But not one that remotely justifies it being split into two movies.

I don't get why people who say they hate Twilight actively seek out information on it. Makes me a little suspicious how much they actually "hate" it. :o
First of all, I have to say that I didn't want to read all the 6 pages, so if I repeat something, I am sorry.
I am actually one of those people who hate Twilight but look for information, watch the movies, etc.
I have to admit that the whole hype around the books and especially the movies interest me somehow. I just find it interesting. I have read the first three books on myself, and I have to say that they were okay, but totally overrated. Everybody who says that the writing is good - I just have to disagree. Also, the whole storyline is pretty horrible. I mean the main idea behind Twilight (girl falls in love with dangerous Vampire, they are happy, blah blah, but there's that sexy werewolve...) is kinda cool altough nothing new (Vampire Diaries made a much more better job with that kind of story line... Both books and the series) I am losing myself...
What I wanna say: The whole hype is very interesting, and Twilight has somehow gained a status in our culture. And I just like to have the overview over my culture ;)
Also, I really HATE it if somebody's saying stuff like: "I hate Harry Potter", but later explaining to me that he neither has seen the movies nor read the books. I don't want to be that kind of guy - so I read the books to find out about the weakpoints.
... Somebody also mentioned the music? I loved the music in the films - it was definitely the only good thing about the movies, but that's okay for me.

ALICE: Edward's going to kill himself! Let's hop a flight to Italy and I'll jack a car!

Seriously, I think they talk about having sex in every book of the series. DO IT OR GET OFF THE RIDICULOUSLY ORNATE OVERPRICED BED, GUYS! :P
But I gotta say, although it
was overdrawn, I respected the author for not making them do it before they were married. Yes, the idea was dragged out and melodramatic, but I thought that was a good touch. First off, it shows Edward's human upbringing--the ideals, the timeframe he grew up in, the fact that it reiterates that he's such a gentleman, etc. But what I really liked--and yes, I know it sounds ridiculously old-school, so please forgive me--it also plants the idea in the young girls reading it that it's okay to wait for marriage. Yes, there are actually people in the world who don't just hop into bed (or the ocean, in Bella and Edward's case :P) with someone just because their hormones are going crazy; they actually want to wait until they're married to have sex. It was one of the few times where I was like, "Go Stephenie!"
I think teenaged girls would be more interested in them than you might think--but the what kind and how it's written/shot, etc, would also factor into it. Which is sort of a whole other discussion.
There is that, and presenting a view of and characters who practice abstinence is indeed fine, but the way they go about it only echoes the other issues they have--Bella wants to have sex, Edward basically blackmails her into getting married before he'll do so. The idea that he's been alive and a teenager for over a hundred years and never had sex even once is also just ridiculous, particularly given the high voltage emotions newborn vamps are described as having frequently.
Thing is, and I by no means have read enough to know this for certain, but I get the impression that a lot of YA novels don't show teens having sex before marriage; but do show girls who do have sex as being the villainized characters. It's just the impression I get. Haids, actually, what is the take on all that in the Vampire Diaries books? I'm curious. It comes up in the show, but honestly sex is pretty much a sidenote to the rest of the plot (which is pretty cool, too, I have to say).
I can think of an exception--the Alanna books by Tamora Pierce. Alanna has sex before marriage, and with more than one person, but all of those relationships are explored in depth, are meaningful ones but not always totally-in-love relationships, and they take precautions against pregnancy. I think it's fantastic that she presented it in a realistic and responsible way.

See, that's cool too! :) Sex in the teeange world is a big deal, whether we like it or not, and it's also refreshing to see a realistic take on it, like in the books you described, Katie. The bottom line is, teenage girls
are curious about sex. When it shows up in a book that was designed for their age group, it's a way of exploring the idea without actually doing it. Seeing it shown from different angles is a way for girls to decide for themselves what their values are--whether they're true-to-life, like in the Alanna books, or romanticised and flowery like in Twilight. Either way, they see their options and can start forming their own ideas.
See, I'm old-school and personally value the idea for
myself of not having sex before marriage. I'm about to hop on a soapbox here for a minute, so scroll over with caution. ::)
I'm
not saying that "ZOMG everyone who has had sex before marriage has made the worst decision ever and is so so wrong!!" at all, just to be clear. I definitely don't want to offend anyone! I'm just saying that for
myself, Hailey Dundas, I have chosen not to have sex before marriage and that is what I believe in for
me. Everyone else is on their own journey and are free to choose whatever works for them, I'm not here to judge or look down on them. I just thought it was cool to see those kinds of values--however twisted and conniving they were ;)--incorporated into Twilight.
Anyway...the Vampire Diaries books, hmm? She kind of touches on the idea of sex, but...you know what, I'll ramble about it in the Vampire Diaries thread! :)
I agree that it's good for YA fiction to show a variety of different ways people can have (or not have) sexual relationships.
Though personally, I never understood why saving sex for marriage, barring specific religious beliefs, is worthwhile. I'm not saying it's bad - whatever floats your boat - I just don't understand why people (aside from religious reasons) would do it. But then, my parents never bothered to get married, so having grown up in a household where nobody had ever been married, marriage is probably a more alien concept to me than it is to most of the people in this forum (I myself am much more likely to have a kid than to ever get married).

Well, Stephenie Meyer
is a Mormon, so that might have something to do with it.
I'm pretty sure it has a LOT to do with a LOT of the story!
I suspect it's a cultural thing. :P I was brought up to consider sex a fairly important part of any close relationship and never even considered abstaining until I met someone with a similar worldview to yours, made worse by the fact that he insisted he had the moral high ground and that there was something wrong with me for not having the same beliefs. ::) It led to a lot of fights and passive-aggression, even though we would have been quite compatible in many other ways. So we broke up after trying to make things work for four years. :P It was very, very messy. :P But it was the best thing I've ever done because now I feel properly loved and valued. :)
I think the point was more of a romantic one. I read Twilight, and honestly, if you read the book, the process isn't as sudden and isn't as creepy. I imagine that the fans enjoyed Twilight more cause they knew the ACTUAL pace of the events, than new people that didn't like a movie cause an actor is hot. Edward is acting as humanly as a Vampire can, and I think that's sweet. I don't think it gives the wrong message to kids. I think if teenagers understand that vampires are NOT real, then it's fine.
I have a BIG problem with Bella however cause she's a horrible person. They had a pretty actor play her in the movie (despite her lack of emotion range) so it hides how mean she is to her friends and family, and that's where the moral issues begin. See, Vampire x human worked in Buffy the vampire Slayer cause Buffy always had moral grounding. Sure, there was drama, but that happens when you date vampires. She had an extraordinary life (being a vampire slayer- not a student at a school that happens to love a vampire), so considering this, she was still a great friend and a mostly caring daughter. Bella shuts EVERYONE around her out, plays Jacob, has a fickle heart, stands up friends, thinks of herself first and not others, and has the personality of dried bread. What's her hobbies? Edward Cullen. That's it. Why on EARTH am I interested? Everyone else in the story is interesting. I reckon if you take her out, it'd be a good story.
My friend suggested that a 'tragically beautiful teen trapped in the wrong age' type character would be more interesting. I think Bella needs alot more than an M.O. change to become likeable as a character.

Well said. :) Bella decides that she wants Edward and ONLY Edward, so demands to become a vampire just so she can have him forever, completely not caring that she's losing everyone else who she's ever been close to. She claims that Jacob is her best friend, but she treats him like total and complete s*** when Edward decides he wants her again. She willingly decides that her own
mother isn't worth holding onto, so she'll gradually start cutting her out of her life. She even would have cut out her father, who she's very close to, if Jacob hadn't saved her the trouble by telling him the truth about the Cullens and the werewolves! She's selfish and manipulating, yet everyone fawns over her.
All that being said, I can't say it makes me hate the book series completely. ;] I actually really enjoyed them, though I will say from here to eternity that the whole concept is insane, especially if you dissect it. When I describe it to people, I hear the words come out of my mouth and I'm like, "Oh my God, this is LUDACRIS." I still like it, though! How sad am I?

am a religious person, but the whole "true love waits" thing is not the entire reason I've decided to wait. The way I feel about it, I only want to experience that kind of intimacy with the person who I'm going to marry. If I'm willing to spend the rest of my life with a guy, I'm willing to wait for God to send him to me before I have sex.

Well, it's badly written, but professionally printed fanfic issues aside, the vampire falling for a human is not a new concept. eyer DID however rewrite alot of rules of vampires which to me is a no no. She's said so herself- she doesn't know anything about vampires. If she did, then maybe it'd be a liked story cause the intent is there. Not the research.
Then again- no amount of accuracy can fix a Mary Sue like Bella.

Sparkling.
Enough said.
I don't mind the sparkling actually. It's flavour. The big one was making them day walkers. Vampires are hunters of the dark. It would've been much more interesting if the Cullens didn't go to school on sunny days if it actually burnt their flesh That would've been believable to a vampire fan rather than sparkling in the sunlight which is totally gay. I wouldn't mind the sparkles if there was a reason that was viable. If he was a pixie or something I'd believe it. A bad ass vampire? No. Perhaps if the manifestation of the vampire gene in them made them permanently luminescent then sure- I'd buy that for a dollar, but sparkling in sunlight replacing the vampire's BIGGEST weakness besides crosses, holy water and garlic like they're traditionally weak against? What kills these things? Their own kind. Not humans. What human could POSSIBLY cut their head off in time to burnt it? They don't sleep. No weaknesses. They're eternal. Why are they not gods already? Where's their sense of mortality?
Ugh. Yeah, she just....created some pretty pretty totally awesome no downsides at all creature, threw in blood drinking, and called it a vampire. They are NOT vampires. They don't even have FANGS!
Well, no they don't, but they do still suck blood so technically it's just her vampires opposed to traditional vampires. I guess it's like some of the arguments about MoE not being a King's Quest game. It's some people's tastes, but not everyone's, but it's still a King's Quest game at the end of the day. I think she would've been better making up a species of vampire that was ascended or something, or something different all together. There's nothing actually wrong with what she's done. Just her reasons or lack of. Stuff like this happens all the time. Look at Elves and how much they've changed since Tolkin. You need to ask what kind of Elves they are before you start talking. Vampires have so many variations it's just not funny.

Well, it's not too far-fetched that perhaps she was going for something like that. She has Edward mention at the end of Breaking Dawn that there are in fact actual
werewolves, or "Children of the Moon," as they're called in the series, not just the Quileute shape-shifting wolves.
I know she based her vampires off of a dream she had, where Edward and Bella were in the meadow talking and he was sparkling, which is where that came from. She built the rest of the stories around that one scene, so it's understandable that she had to make some..."creative adjustments."
Yeah- I saw that interview too which changed my opinion of her slightly. She REALLY should've done more research, but for what Twilight is, it's not bad. It's just as if you were on Fanfic.net reading an amateur story about vampires. She stretched the meaning of everything in the story to her liking, and went with it. I'd be fine with that if Bella wasn't such a jerk.
That's just how I see it though. I'm all for stretching the rules if you know what they are. I do that in my story with Arkillian Dragons. They're not dragons, but a different branch of them. It adds new dynamic to something familiar without saying "Oh yeah- I'm an idiot"

I disagree with you on that. Edward treats Bella like as much crap as she treats everyone else. All that talk about how "fragile" and "breakable" really bugs me. He doesn't show any actual respect for her. And it does give the wrong message to kids: if you get into an abusive relationship, you will be happy, but if you find someone who seems to respect you (Jacob), then it's not "meant to be."
That's another thing that bothers me about this series. I hate the idea of predestination, especially in the case of imprinting with the shapeshifters. I remember a Mormon trying to explain this to me: "You have free will, but there's one path God wants you to follow, and that's the one you
have to follow." Then what's the point of having free will in the first place if your goal is to follow the "right" path?

According to what
I believe as a Christian: you have the path God would like you to follow (a godly, righteous path), but you don't
have to follow it. He gives you opportunities that can lead you down different roads, but ultimately it's your decision how it all turns out.

I think He just wants you to be happy, whatever you decide. :)

He's extremely controlling of her. When he ripped the engine out of her car to prevent her from seeing Jacob, that pissed me off. The pace of the book kind of fools you into thinking it's all okay--which was my experience with it. I read them quickly, then put down book 4 and finally went, "Wait a second..."
(Bella, in turn, is also very controlling but in a different way since she can't compete physically with Edward or Jacob. She instead controls and manipulates emotionally, and not even just them.)

How about this one: you have free will, we all in fact have free will, but in the grand scheme of things, not all of our decisions are all that important. There are some events that God has decided will happen or would happen contingent upon people's steering reality's course toward some unwanted outcome.
If God is omniscient, He knows all of the possible options at any given time. He only needs to take action to prevent the ones He absolutely doesn't want happening from happening and to cause the ones that He absolutely wants to happen to happen: and He's omnipotent so He can do that.
Conversely, we exist on a much smaller day-to-day scale such that our decisions seem really important to us. This offers us the assurance that by our choices, things could be different but also assures us that whatever reality we find ourselves in is moderately acceptable to God (because He took no special action to preclude it). Therein ends my diatribe unless we want to get into more metaphysics...

So, to steer this thread back on-topic, I present to you the reason why Twilight is so popular (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4uuGvmAxTI).
I like the first comment: "Hey, this is an extremely offensive video. I like Lego bricks."
Hah, nice. I hadn't even read the comments.
Bwa ha ha ha haaaaaaa! That's awesome...yet sadly, it's also true. I hadn't thought about why girls identify with Bella, but it's true: every girl--EVERY girl--feels insecure in her life, and Bella is the Lego brick representation of insecure. Girls are like, "ZOMG! If Bella can find her (perfectfacesuperhotsuperperfectflawless) Edward, then of course I can too!" Too funny!
Under the suggested videos, this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqvg0C90FhM&NR=1&feature=fvwp) was among them. I've never watched the movies, so I'm not sure why Carlisle is all whispery and quiet, like it's all a big secret, but it's pretty funny. ;D

I've never seen or read Twilight, but I have seen Blade, so I definitely laughed at *that* ending.
If you've seen Blade, you may appreciate something I posted earlier in this thread (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=9570.msg306641#msg306641) (apologies if you've seen it already).

I saw it, and I know who Blade is, but I don't get it. Who is that character supposed to be in the movies? Is he Laurent?
No, no, it's just Blade saying he's going to kill Bella & Edward and do us all a favor. :)
What Katie said. It's basically the crossover that Twilight haters daydream about. ;)
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! So he doesn't really show up in the movies. I get it!
Ah, the wonders of Photoshop. ;)
somebody mentioned the music in this series. I did come across a few pieces of the score, and they were absolutely wonderful. Of course, by Alexander Desplat, who is great at making music an has also lead the score for the latest (not sure how many) Potter films.
As for the abusive relationship between Bella and Edward, and the fact that they are manipulative teens, well, that's a very good depiction of many relations I've seen --especially with teens!. But I guess I understand the point of this being sold to pre-teen girls as "it is ok".
I do remember the first time I was heartbroken. The beginning of the second movie reminded me a bit how I felt then (Hey, I wrote a full book of poems out of that particular experience!). There was a particular scene that was very well done, where Bella is in her room and time goes from summer to winter, and she's still there in the same position. There are some relationships in our lives that makes us become stagnated or fixated in particular people, even if we know deep inside they are not good for us. We all grow out of that and become jaded and see love as a more practical thing eventually, but there is a period in everyone's life where love can be a life-death situation. And I think that's what Twilight is trying to depict.
Now, I'm not really defending it. I've seen the movies and I only really liked the first one. I really liked the chemistry between the two leads there --it was a weird relationship, it was not normal, it may have been built upon abuse and whatever, but at least, in the first movie, it feels different. They are teens that find each other through the worse in each one, their loneliness brings them together, there's a sense of overall dread in the movie, and it is through this dread that they connect. There's tragedy cast on both of them, and I think they did a wonderful job at it--they are both highly unlikeable by standards, and yet you eventually feel their connection. It never felt cheesy or cliché as I thought it was going to feel --reason why I was dragged into the movies to watch it.
I've heard that the books go on the romance more as almost a soft-porn entry to pre-teen girls where Bella just keeps going on and on how she's oh, so in love with Edward. But I certainly didn't get that vibe from the movie in general --or at least not excessively.
And then it became a triangle, and the next two movies were crap.
A lot of people dislike that particular bit in New Moon, where four months just pass and Bella's zombie-like throughout. In the book it was four pages, totally blank except the name of a month on each one. I actually liked that and thought it was effective--I've been there myself, I know that feeling.
Still, can't wait for the trainwreck of Breaking Dawn to hit theatres!
I saw the trailer for it when I went to see Transformers 3. It was...odd.
And I didn't know they were splitting it into two parts.

QuoteIDW Publishing is daring fans to switch to a vampire franchise with some teeth! This year at San Diego Comic-Con, in an unprecedented promotion, fans can turn in any copy of a Twilight book or graphic novel at the IDW booth #2643 for a free copy of a 30 DAYS OF NIGHT graphic novel! IDW is vowing to help vampire fans get back on track with the undead the way they were always meant to be: bloody and terrifying. "Real horror fans have watched vampires systematically turned into wimpy fodder for years now. It's time to fight back" said Niles. "I'm happy to be working with IDW on the Sparkles for Blood event. Hopefully, working together we can put an end to this nightmare."
IDW's exclusive "Sparkles for Blood" outreach program is designed to help all fans of the undead get what they really want - bloody, vampire horror. Sprung from the twisted minds of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith in 2002, 30 Days of Night graphic novels and major motion pictures offer vampires as the feral, animalistic creatures that stalked humans under cover of night that they really are.
"Recently, vampires in pop culture have started to swing back to the romanticized vamps of other literature and films before 30 Days of Night," said IDW chief creative officer, Chris Ryall. "In some cases, they're even being treated more as chaste immortal teenagers than as the murderous creatures that they are. 'Sparkles for Blood' will remind everyone that vampires are creatures of the night, not of the twilight.

Eeeeeeeew, I just noticed this quote. :X This reminds me of my giving blood horror story in June. Wait, did I tell you guys about that? I don't think I did! Oooooooooh, story time! If you have a weak stomach, don't read on.
I'm warning you.
Okay, so I had an appointment to give blood the very last weekend in June. I go up to the blood bus, get a bed almost immediately, and the girl hands me a squishy foam banana to squeeze every ten seconds. She jabs me and my blood is flowing, and it's all good. As she walks past me, I reflexively move my arm away from her so she doesn't bump me, since those hallways in the blood bus are as narrow as the foam banana. "Oh, Hailey, just so you know, we're trained to be very, versy conscious of donors. It's in our training to watch out for you, so no need to move away. We'll adjust ourselves for you."
Fair enough. I whipped out my phone and started doing some one-handed texting to my sister: "Donating blood. Be home in half an hour." I laid my phone down on my stomach and chilled. Approximately fifteen seconds after said chilling, a young phlebotomist in training hurried past me. Oh, and he slammed into my arm and tore the needle out.
I never actually saw my arm as this was happening, but I immediately felt the warmth oozing and pooling in the crook of my elbow. I remember meeting eyes with the phlebotomist and feeling rather panicked, and I felt my face go white. Then I looked away and tried to calm my breathing as all the sticky warmth drips down my elbow. The poor kid was probably younger than I am, and he's like, "AHHHHH! I'm so sorry! I'm so so so sorry!! Some-someone come qu-qu-quick and grab gloves, I need help! Jenny, help me! No, shouldn't you hold her arm first? You want me to? Okay, I'm applying pressure..." Then he looks at me and is all, "Are you okay? You're not gonna pass out, are you?! Your face got pretty white! You're okay, right?!" By then I was feeling more calm, so I was pretty much like, "Dude, I'm fine. Please clean me up."
It finally got to the point where I was all cleaned up and had a pretty pink bandage, but I felt so bad for the poor guy! He came up to me like five times, apologizing and offering me extra ginger snaps. The suckiest part was, they couldn't even use the blood I
had donated, since the air had contaminated it. :( Oh well, it didn't deter me. I have another appointment in two weeks!
I'm glad it didn't deter you. I've donated once. The second time they got me in a nerve and made me faint. I have permanent nerve damage in my left forearm arm. I get pins and needles tapping the inside of my wrists. I wasn't scared of needles till then. Now my left arm from the upper arm down goes onto panic mode if anything sharp come near it :(
Eeeeeeesh! That IS a horror story! I'm sorry, Arkillian. :(
And Katie, I wasn't addressing the pregnancy issue, I was addressing the spoiler about how all pregnant vampire teens look like Bella. How could you ruin people's fantasties that way! ;)
Nah- it's ok. It's my left arm, not my right so it's all good XD It's about the only place I'm ticklish now though cause of it though. It may eventually heal but... :/

When the phone rang, I was totally expecting him to just divert from the battle and start talking to Bella... stand up, breaking their cover, start whining that she wanted to *gasp* go do something (anything! seriously, anything) with someone other than him (seriously, anything... sleep without him looming over her for a change... go to the movies with some friends (I don't think Princess Petulanta has many left by the end of the series who aren't in-laws but whatever, I'm being hypothetical here), defend herself from some assailants, A N Y T H I N G).

Wait, being pale makes you a vampire in the Twilight zone?
Vampires are pale. Bella is pale. Therefore, Bella is a vampire. :P
My god, my hands. I'm a vampire!!
I am pretty pale... fortunately, I'm not pale enough to have had this (http://notalwaysright.com/it-must-have-been-a-new-moon/11480) happen to me. If that becomes a thing, I... wait, I've just had a terrible realization: in the books, the werewolves are all manner of "red" synonyms and the vampires are all manner of "pale" synonyms. ... Does this mean we can rank people's skin tone on a scale from vampire to werewolf? ... ... *feels disturbed*
Also, "snowsferatu", I lol'd. XD
Quote from: Haids1987 on August 10, 2011, 07:08:24 PMYou're killing me, Smalls! What is so shocking?! :D
Oh, sorry. I didn't realize your post before that was actually asking. But yeah, that's what I was referring to.

No, no!! You must not do that. It was the worst of the worst of the most worst puns. A pathetic attempt at something that can only give birth to animals with 'tude. Like a vampire yeti in cap and sneakers running around a maze caves trying to hunt down coins or toenails or something else of sentimental value.
Wait a minute...
I think it just might work. Maybe if we were to design him to look like George Michael. The Faith-era George Michael. With leather jackets as 1ups and when the player leaves the controller on the floor the vampire yeti gets annoyed and starts to sniff its armpits. Yes.... It might just work.

...with the hatred of people with good taste all the world over?
...with the ire of parents who must suffer through their teen daughters demanding to spend money on this product?
....with the knowledge that we've made the world just a tiny bit worse and sold a little slice of our souls?
Sorry, but I have to ask the question:
Could this mean that mr Cage will be appearing in the next Twilight movie? (http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2011/09/19/eBay-seller-Nicolas-Cage-is-a-vampire/UPI-75061316456168/l)
Leave it to a freaking weirdo Seattleite to pull something like this! ::) Mutants like this give us a bad name.

This one made me die laughing. Wow that is probably the funniest thing I have ever read. Perfectly obnoxious and sums up a teenybopper mindset.
